That's disasterous if the studio has been lost.
Hope it hasn't had any damage though.

So sad to hear about this.

From Joolz on Facebook: New Model Army's studio has been destroyed by fire: the mill next door burned down and his room was wrecked by smoke heat and water as the firemen used their window to put the hoses on the flames. All the beautiful guitars, the big mixing desk, the memorabilia, handwritten lyrics - everything all gone. We haven't been allowed in the building yet but Michael Dean got a quick look and reckons it's looking like 99% of the bands stuff has gone. We wont know the full insurance situation until after Xmas. Keep the band in your thoughts. X

Sending good thoughts that is isn't as bad as it looks.

So sorry for this massive loss - I know that no amount of money can replace all of the memorabilia & lyrics.

Sending Best Wishes from Nottingham that all is not lost

So Sad right now :(

Today Is NOT a Good Day :(

Its absolutely horrendous news.  Most things are replaceable but they wont have the same history and meaning and instruments are always personal....part of you.  I cannot believe this has happened.

And as for another suspect fire at a mill in Bradford...seems to have been about the third in a year.

Really, really sorry to hear this. The main thing is, of course, that no-one is injured (I sincerely hope anyway).

Very best wishes to the band and Joolz - my thoughts are with you all.

Words cannot express the sadness that I feel for the band and all effected. You will rise from the ashes and you know we will all support and follow you when the time is right. I was so happy when I went to sleep last night I got Joolz book Wild Thing and a beautiful acoustic guitar for Crimbo but this has given me a strange feeling reading all the post on FB and here, Im more determinded to learn the guitar now than I have ever been. To all the band and family try and stay focused and hugs, love  ???

I heard last night, made some phone calls, and just couldn't be the one to post anything on here....... Sorry folks, I couldn't do it, hence my abscence........ Gutted....... Having seen what was in the room I can only begin to imagine how all the band, especially Justin is feeling.....
A lifetime of playing guitar invested in that room and all his arsenal potentially ruined........ Not to mention 3 of Micheal's kits and Rob's last kit aswell......... :'(
All the handwritten lyrics............. Momento's, little bits of stuff as keepsakes, keyboards, guitar pedals, posters, the whole backline and the bands mixing desk and recording gear,................ I have no words..... Just horrible.........
As far as I'm aware Paradise Lost are in the same buolding aswell, I'm sure Ste' said so when I saw him last.........  :-[

Latest news via Joolz on Facebook half an hour ago or something......

OK - the boys have been let into the studio and anything uncovered in the face of the blaze was destroyed, including a wall-mounted rack of beloved old Les Pauls, SGs, Lowdens etc reduced to a charred twisted mess. All the studio recording equipment, the Hammond, the WASP, the harmonium, Robert's remaining Slingerland drum kit, much of Michael Dean's kit has all gone too. But - some of the touring gear which was in hard cases may be salvageable (we have to see what the luthier says about the cased guitars) although its all soaked through. The bag of lyrics has been found and may with care be saved. There is hope, folks, and never forget, it's only stuff and can mostly be replaced, no one was hurt, and that's the most important thing. Thank you again for your kind good wishes. And thanks to the fire service for being, well, brave and generally wonderful.....

I'm sure Ben will do everything he can to save what can be saved....... Wish him luck, he's goin' to need as much as he can get! :-[

It's awful, who would have thought this last weekend?
Everyone had a good time in Amsterdam and a week later, hell breaks loose.
Like said before: no one got hurt and that's a good thing!
Instruments are gone but no talent is gone, it's still there.

A phoenix will rise and they will return.
We can wait for a new album, we have 30 years of great songs to play and enjoy.
And when they tour - we will all be there, like we've always done!

Latest from Joolz....

Just seen the video footage from the burnt-out studio - pure devastation. Terrible. Thank the Goddess no one was in there at the time it must have been an inferno. Salvage operations under way, the stuff in hard cases which had not been unpacked after the tour are looking good, but man. the rest is just a twisted blackened ruin with all the roof caved in. So sorry for the lads.

Fingers crossed fer some glimmer of hope in the goddawful mess....

At least the original lyrics have been found, I had mentioned these to a friend on FB - While they could be reproduced at any time it wouldn't be the same would it, the original emotions that Justin was feeling when he wrote the songs would be lost, it'd be like trying to recreate a love letter, yes, you could redo it word for word but it wouldn't be the same as writing it the first time.

I do hope that they can be saved.

Very sad news, glad to hear all the band are safe and hope that nobody else was injured at all.  Things, they might be precious to us but its lives that really matter, and its scary to think how much worse it could have been if it had happened at a different time.  What a shocking situation, take good care of yourselves and I hope that as much as possible can be salvaged or replaced.

Stunned, only just picked up on this and took the edge off my Christmas. Anything that hurts the band hurts us all I think, but like someone else said on this thread earlier, we have a 30 year body of work to fall back on and will all be there when the band tour again. Probably more so as everyone rallies around.

But easier for us to stay positive I feel as we don't have to clear up and start again - although if the band send out an SOS, I am sure the south coast family will respond same as those elsewhere.

Justin would sound good on my Indie acoustic, let alone on a Lowden. Like OG I hope they recover the lyrics and that the tour equipment that wasn't unpacked is ok. But what do you say? Trying to put myself in the band's shoes but I just can't begin to imagine how they must feel. The guitars that were destroyed are part of the NMA heritage, the sound, the history, the whole thing. And Robert's drumkit. I don't have the words.

Sending out all the positive vibes I can muster, not the start to 2012 the band or the following would have wished for but the band's talent is such that they will prevail in whatever way they must.

Seen some fire damaged places before now through work, but that video really makes it look a bad one...  :(

One thing... be careful in the there... I presume that the fire service and/or structural engineers have considered the building "safe", but tread carefully, and watch out for some of the burnt stuff, certain things are toxic when melted.

Thank you to everyone for your many messages of sympathy and support. We have really been amazed by the response and the generosity of the offers of assistance we have received here, on Facebook and directly to our address. Of course we are all upset about what has happened especially the loss of irreplaceable musical instruments but we ARE insured and hope that at least our financial losses will be covered. Please don't send or pledge us money. If something does go wrong with the insurance claim, we will let you know.
In the end though, nobody was hurt and what was lost is just material. The band is about People and Spirit and as we can all see, that has never been stronger. There may perhaps be a bit of a delay in our activities but otherwise everything will continue as before. All our Very Best of the Season to all of you. JS

terrible news.

For what it's worth, i once had an old Les Paul that I loved dearly.  So much in fact that I was too in awe to want to hammer it about and I was even quite content just to stare at it and listen to the sustain!
In the end I got rid and replaced it with a cheap Epi copy (and bought a ticket to australia with the spare cash!) and what convinced me to do this was JS's comments about an argument on here about 'Orange Tree Roads'.
Basically, when 'Eight' came out and there was criticism of the production (clicks and pops etc) and some were saying OTR would have been much better with violin on it instead of keyboards. "Yeah! get Ed back in" the old crusties were demanding! and JS said (paraphrasing) it's not about the instrument the part is played on but what is actually played, for instance the Vagabonds melody also being written on a keyboard. Which is spot on, we now get Vagabonds on guitar. And we even get Another Imperial Day acapella!!

I can't imagine how gutted the band are (even if they get the money paid out) and this is a major setback. But music is magic, creating something out of nothing, not out of an instrument and these boys are a set of magicians. So face in to the wind boys. Like you always do.

" But music is magic, creating something out of nothing, not out of an instrument and these boys are a set of magicians. So face in to the wind boys. Like you always do."

Spot on there!

it is truly amazing (and not a little inspiring) to me that the prevailing attitude of this is that it will all be OK.
It is another reminder of why I've been so in love with the music and the passion of NMA for so so many years.

My thoughts are with you. Good luck and please let us know if we can help. And thank you. (again)

"The band is about People and Spirit and as we can all see, that has never been stronger....." That's the only positive outcome of the tragedy and sadness the Band and the whole family experienced. Simultaneously, due to the fact that we all must wait with any donations until the Insurance procedures are over please take into consideration the idea of Marc SanityAssassin presented on F., and buy goods from NMA Shop. CDs, DVDs, tees, hoodies for friends, family or anybody else. That's the best way we can help nowadays......

JS
Here here js I salute you  :) the fire wont take away peoples spirit and passion for the band but just make it much more stronger  :)

Ive just read that there has been another fire in another mill in Bradford yesterday....I really hope the two aren't connected.  Its the fifth major fire at a mill in the city and surrounding areas that I can remember this year.  Its sad to see history and what are symbols of Bradford going up in flames for whatever reasons....but its also so upsetting to see the knock on effect it has when innocent people become involved in it like NMA have been.

Seeing the photos after the fire are soul destroying....such a terrible waste.  I am amazed that the band are facing it all with such courage...and its a true testament to them that they are....out of everything bad something good always comes....

Well I just hope that the Insurance company dont drag their heels on this. What a nightmare but like everyone says at least no one was hurt in the fire. I know instruments are important to musicians but musicians are more important to their fans. Im sure all the family would agree with that. Best wishes to all the band and people behind the scenes for a happy end to 2011 and a great 2012.

I just heard about it - so very, very sorry!

The most important thing is, of course, that nobody was injured - but still...I know I can't even imagine to begin how devastating this has to be.

It is good to see that everyone is still in good spirits - here is hoping that at least the insurance company won't add to the drama.

Take care!

Heard this sad news on Christmas day but first time back on here since. Many condolences to the band and others who lost stuff.  :(

I was wearing the latest tour t-shirt when I heard, the 5 drumming skeletons emerging from flames.... seems strangely prophetic that design now.....  :-\

I lost my keyboard, amp and lights in a flood a few years back, though the insurance paid out I could never replace that feeling of conncection with the keyboard I had when playing gigs etc.... the memories remain but we evolve I guess.....

Best wishes to all, straight on for the days ahead.... I think thats how it goes.....  :)

A very, very sad news. We checked the site today to see if there are maybe any news about live dates - and instead we've found this. Our sympathy is with the band. All things material are essentially replaceable - but I guess some memories are gone with the items lost in the fire. And being an amateur musician I think I can imagine how it feels to have lost an instrument one has spend thousands of hours with...

In case the insurance claim should not cover your financial losses *please* let your fans know. We would be honored to help in any way, thats the least we can do considering the spiritual help your music offers to so many in need, for the last 31 years.

As I have previously posted on this thread, it's terrible news, but in the cold light of day, and thinking of the future, I hope that the insurance pays out big time for this. I know sentimental things are gone and more besides. It's what we pay insurance for, the value of something is immaterial in this case, how can you put a price on the workmen s tools that, emotionally ....MONEY can't buy

oh man..this was devastating.
I've known the man who owns the Mill since before he bought it,in fact the band I played in for a while,Zed,were the first band to set up a rehearsal space there. It was always a bit...erm..wierd that NMA set up home in there as I've bin into them for years (the sound of them rehearsing as I walked past the studio was a bit surreal!),but the Mill being a place full to bursting with Bradford musicians,it made sense that NMA would join in...but I've been waiting for this for ages...having been living in a bus again for a while in lincs,I haven't been up to b'ford for a while and when I saw Fluffywytch post summat on facebook about the fire,I rang my mates from the Mill...it's been, and I'm sure is STILL,upsetting and saddening to see the ruined equipment, but all I can think is--the place has been running as a club for years and THANK THE GODS  it didn't happen on a night when the place was open.I've seen that place rammed full and we've followed the pattern of local mills burning down for a while wondering when our beloved Mill would get caught up in the bad luck.

JS's post about the band being about more than material posessions is right...I'm so glad no-one was hurt and,as a musician, very sorry to hear of lost instruments...new ones won't feel the same...but it IS just stuff.

Here's to the pheonix rising ;)

I came back from 3 weeks of crazy travelling yesterday and only read this news this morning. This fire is such a terrible thing to have happened. I am very sad for all that was lost -I know it was only 'material things', but these things are connected with music, and my heart aches...
I also read Justin's comment in this thread: WOW, what a great, great man he is. Even in an event like this he finds words for us that are full of hope for the future and that reassure us. What a man! What a band!

Hi all these are terrible news. Imagine on the same day a fire risked to destroy and kill people in a squat close to my place in Berlin where actually some friends live. On the same day. The fire started in 2 diferent places so potentially could be a fascist action. And also in our case the place is almost back to normal thanks to activists who immediately went to help clean and reconstruct.

I was reading the website below's report of the fire.  It mentioned, amongst others, the loss of 30 year old tapes of early work which were to be included on a spring re-release of the Vengeance album.

Is this true?  :(

I've also seen that reported and is another great loss if that is the case.  Justin speaks of buying the Vengeance tapes back from Nigel Morton for the purpose of a deluxe edition (my term not his!) in the interview carried out at the Brixton gig that was recently posted.  Hopefully somebody else has a copy of the tape that is in a releasable quality.
