I'd like to pass on my sincere wishes for a bright future to Nelson in whatever he does next....... I'm sure he has his reasons........ I'll miss him on the right of the stage as I watch whoever is to step in....... Great bloke, awesome player, of every thing he seemed to pick up.......
I'm sure everyone else feels the same, he's been there a bloody long time, doing a bloody good job of 4 string wrangling........ :'(

Cheers Nelson, you were the first member of NMA I plucked up the courage to talk to (way back at Reading in 91) and I'm pleased to say you've always had time for us fans. Thanks for all the great gigs over the years and good luck with your future endeavours, you will be missed.

Much as I've always loved the music and Justin's lyrics, what first got me hooked to NMA was the bass, and having discovered them and become a fan just after he had joined, to me Nelson was THE bass player, and the band has always been about him as much as it was about Justin... thanks for the last 20+ years Nelson, you will be missed. Good luck for the future and good luck to NMA finding a suitable replacement, it won't be easy

Perhaps it's the old headbanger in me, but is it strange that I immediately imagined Jason Newsted in the band?
Nelson, you are second to none as a musician, a performer, a human being, and a friend. It has been a distinct honour to know you, and I hope to run into you again down the road, even though with you no longer in NMA, it will be quite a bit more difficult.

Boy, we were just talking a few nights ago about what an incredible bass player Nelson is.
That he has a melodic approach that is always appropriate for the song.
I discovered NMA when I was learning to play bass.
Wore out my cassettes of LOHC and TAC, listening to those bass lines.
So, now I don't play, but my ears have been trained.
Nelson, the very, very best of luck to you and so sorry that we missed you when you played Albuquerque last.
{We could not make the show because there were fireworks near our house that freaked out our dog, and
no dog sitter would help us, so we stayed with the pup, fearing for her health if we left her.
She said thanks for understanding, by the way :>}

Nelson - an NMA legend who will be hugely missed both on stage, on recordings and in person. A smashing chap who always has time for a chat with fans. I went to my first NMA gig in October 1990 so I've only ever seen Nelson on bass live - it'll be sad not seeing him there but I'm sure whoever joins NMA as the new (not replacement) bassist is going to be just great too.
Nelson - I wish you all the very best for the future and thanks so much for all you've given us and for always living up to your real name. You're a great, great chap and we love you! Keep on rockin'!

Thanks for the great riffs and as has been said elsewhere your rhythmic but harmonic genius (or summat like that, I think it's the right sentiment, whatever).
We chatted pre Endorseit in Dorset and I would thoroughly second all that has been said about you being a top guy, and would also wish you all luck in whatever you choose to pursue. If it's at all musical, your clear skill and prowess on stringed instruments will out, I'm sure.
Our collective loss, but good fortune for the future fella.

And please don't get me wrong cause of course I agree with all the comments and yes, I wish Nelson
the very best with everything and yes, everyone is allowed to leave a job - no matter what, it's his
decision and it's a good one, I am sure of it.
Still ... the first thing that got into my mind was "what the f*ck" ??????
Somehow it feels like a weird NMA year and it has only just begon ...
But then 'weird' can also be a positive thing so that's what we're aiming for, I guess.
Nelson - no hard feelings what so ever, guess I was just shocked and surprised, speachless.

Nelson was and, I am sure still is a thoroughly nice bloke. When he moved to Bradford after joining the band we took him on many a night out to The Smithy, Rios and who can forget the wonderful Champages?

I am very sad to read that Nelson is leaving... Two of the things I remember the most from my first NMA gig are his way of playing bass (the soooound of it. Always amazing) and...how handsome he looked to me ;-)

Endless gratitude and smiles to the man who put the precision into Fender Precision. I guess like all ex members of the band he will in his own way be irreplaceable. Not least because the bass lines are what this band have always been known for. So I wish him good fortune and send my heartfelt thanks.

Whoever fills his shoes will have a hard act to follow. Though it should be remembered that Justin has never disappointed us when it comes to bringing new musicians and dimensions into the band.

Sad news indeed but I fully understand the reasons for leaving.... sometimes family has to come before The Family.
I will miss the smile, the laid backness, the wonderful musicianship, but have plenty of happy memories from the last 22 years.
The first bass player I got to see with the band so really the only "real" one for me.
It was an honour to watch you, to meet you, to know you..... so many thanks Nelson and good luck for the future.
As for the band well a great man once said " if you're not changing then you're already dead"...... or something like that.... ;)

New Model Army have had immense luck with bassists over the years. Moose defied physics by working out as well as he did after Mr. Morrow and Nelson really ought to have been when the bubble burst but instead we got over two decades of outstanding musicianship. I'm really excited to see who comes in and where that steers the music.
As for Nelson, I shall miss our occasional pre or post-gig pint chats, even if we only ever talked shite about getting a Kip Keino site going under the Bittersweet Embrace engine. Best laid plans, eh? If Surfquake ever make it up to the Barbarian Northlands they'll get a warm (not literally) welcome. If people want to listen to something that for me encapsulates the asset that he's been to NMA as well as anything, I refer them to one of his songwriting credits - Headlights from Strange Brotherhood.
All the best, Nelson - we'll see you at the 35th Anniversary shows in 2015, if not before ;)

Just reading this and what can say thats all ready been said .I First stared following NMA on the Imputry Tour in 1990 and first time i met NeLson and not seen him since 2006 . But Hes a great Bass player and whish i could Play as Well as him :( But whish him all the best in what Ever he Dos Take it Easy.

Sad news. Always watch the gigs in front of Nelson... And observe how he "fly" into the music...
I will never forget his drumming session on the 30th anniversary concerts... An. Emotion that make fall into tears.

I have started visiting NMA gigs 1991, there was always a relaxed bass player at the right. I saw him playing the accustic six string and the second drum set occasionally. Thank you and take care!!!

Nelson inspired me to want to play bass (and to continue :-) ), so sad to see him go. He seemed to bring something to the band from a different angle. He covered the Morrow/Harris styles quite comfortably, but he also recognised there were less and less space for all that bass virtuoso stuff anyway as the NMA songwriting developed. Plus the times were changing! ...
So it's going to be interesting what direction is next. I imagine a replacement has been lined up given the timing of the announcement.
ps. He nailed the Green & Grey bassline, the Raw Melody Men version is THE version.

just heard the news...
can't help but feel a loss. although I'm sure at the end it'll probably turn out fine both for the band and Nelson.
the bass is such an important and distinctively unique part of NMA's music... right now first thing that comes to my mind is how my insides feel each and every time when I've heard live Nelson's bass coming in at the beginning of Brother.... blows me away.
and Nelson's bass playing accounts for 22 of the 30 years of NMA music, so this probably explains the feeling of loss...
all the best to Nelson and all his future endevours!!! such a great guy, down-to-earth and always calm!
and I'm sure we'll meet again! :)
I sincerely hope that this decision is not due to some health (or whatever) problems in his family...

The statement on the front page does make it sound like there's something reasonably serious going on in Nelson's family, and so first I have to say that I hope that resolves itself the best way it can. After that, I can only say thank you. So many gigs, so many memorable moments....Justin & Nelson are the only constants through every NMA gig I've seen, and I enjoyed the hell out of each and every one of them. Goodbye and good luck.

I'm certain Nelson put a lot of thought into such a decision, and I wish him nothing but the best now in difficult times and in the future.
The first gig I saw with him some 20 years ago didn't leave anything to the imagination - he was the best man for the job after Moose left. He put his own stamp on the band's unique sound and moved it forward brilliantly. Certainly not an easy act to follow in more ways than one.

As a Bass man myself I want 1st to say Nelson you laid some serious bottom ;D .I enjoyed your playing and I will always treasure those memories and pictures I have of you and the band on stage in NY since 2005.

I guess I'm still in denial about this and haven't found the words until now. It's something you knew might happen eventually....but you always avoided thinking about it.
I got into NMA during Thunder & Consolation but the first album I bought as a "new" album was Impurity. So for me, Nelson was always THE bass player for NMA. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE everything that Stuart and Moose did, but those two guys were almost one of those "before my time" kinda things (if that makes sense). I saw NMA twice in the States (on the Impurity and TLOHC tours) and then they didn't come back for 12 years. When they finally did, I didn't even bother going up to any of them to talk because I had met the members of a few bands before and sometimes meeting them isn't what you were hoping for and you're crushed. I didn't want to risk that with a band that means so much to me.
Over the next few years they came back to the US a few times and my wife and I would go all over the country following the band. We finally decided to talk to them and they were some of the most welcoming, humble and thankful people we have ever met. Even more than what we had hoped for.
I've played guitar for as long as I can remember but it was Nelson that influenced me enough to pick up the bass. I loved his style. It wasn't as flashy as Stuart but it seemed to "fit" the songs better. Subtle, but prominent. And to this day, his style is what I look for in other bass players. Always playing for the song first…. but still making their own statement while keeping it very interesting (to both musicians and non-musicians…. which is a very difficult thing to achieve!). If I had a question about his gear or how he did something, he was always happy to explain things to me. He is truly one of the nicest people I have ever met.
My wife and I were lucky enough to get to do the artwork and book for the 30th Anniversary box set. We didn't know it at the time but this would be the start of the closing of the chapter of Nelson's time in the band. That opportunity means even more to us now (Nel, I hope we made you proud and can use the book to look back on in a few years!). We saw a handful of the 30th shows and always got a warm, welcoming smile from Nel at every show. We talked, laughed and then we watched his incredible playing night after night. Absolutely incredible. I will always cherish those memories.
Nel, I wish you nothing but the best for years to come and I want to thank you for all you've given us. The music, the inspiration, your kindness, your welcoming smile, everything. We're going to miss you up there and listening to your boundless creativity on the albums, but we completely understand.
All the best for the future and thank you again for everything you've given us. You have given us more than you will ever know.

i remember buying a copy of NME and melody maker when it was announced that Nelson was to be the new bassist for NMA... was that really 22 years ago... thanks for the chats weve had over the last few years and i wish you all the best. there is a very serious and large pair of boots to be filled here.

Like many of the other Yanks on this thread, the Impurity tour in North America was my first time seeing the band live and Nelson was holding down the right side of the stage (from the fan's view) with Ed. I have pix from a gig at the late but only modestly-lamented Limelight in NYC I'll have to dig up, scan, and post some time.
Your bass line on "Island" is one of many favorite NMA moments. You were always pleasant to this random stranger coming over to say hi, before or after gigs, when you were far from home.

I wanna say a big thank you to Nelson. I just think he quit at his top being tremendous on TIAGD among other things. I had a vague feeling he was looking in another direction, or to quote Justin 'one part left behind, one part already gone'. I think he is ready for doing what he gotta do so I wish him all the best with it!!

I havent been on here in a while and my gigging has been limited in recent years.
But I saw this and just wanted to wish Nelson well in the future.
Ive spent whole tours down the front, usually at the right of the stage and will always remember how kind and caring Nelson was to me when I toured when 6 months pregnant!
He made a point of asking if I was ok every night and asked my friends at subsequent gigs after my son was born, how we were doing.
It meant a lot to me.
