Title: New Mojo review
Post by: peternotbaldyet on August 01, 2013, 11:16:25 AM
Great review. The 'late in the day' thing is a bit harsh though! With every new release I expectthe world to suddenly sit up and notice the finest band of the last 30 odd years. Might the new album do it?

Hi JC. It came through as a facebook link. If you can get on the NMA facebook page it's there. The album gets 4 stars and ' A late in the day career high'.

'Frontman Justin Sullivan has finally discovered temperance and restraint' A bit harsh when you think of all the great acoustic tracks over the years and the whole 'Navigating by the Stars' album.

Forgive the reviewer, he's probably not a hardcore NMA-er, just someone who's heard the more well-known tracks and bits and bobs over the years.  Some folks still think NMA begins and ends with No Rest.

He liked it, he's recommended it to people who aren't familiar with NMA... that's good enough for me.

Fair point well put. I like the idea that even none NMA followers are liking it. A little frustrating to think there are promo copies of the album circulating the music industry at the moment, but I am content to wait till the official release date to clap my ears around it.

Julian Cope ? I know Julian and Justin doesn't even register on Julian's Bonkers Chart !

 ;D

Least we got in the reviews and someone other than us lot might read it and buy the album.

Ben Myers is a hardcore (American not UKHC) as I recall type of lad. Seem to think I met him at a gig I did with an old band of mine in London, X Fest i think....... So the review being that positive is good. Especially sein as the new stuff is not "guitar band in a room" type stuff that Ben would be more aux fait with.  8)

Happy days!

Are there any other reviews that anyone has seen?

I check Google each day for new reviews but nothing for the moment! ;D
It seems that there are others reviews somewhere because, according to the Shop...:

New Model Army celebrate 30 years of releasing music this year with what the critics are calling their best ever album ”Between Dog and Wolf.”

The album sounds distinctly different to any previous NMA album, with comparisons to Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Peter Gabriel and Pink Floyd.

I remember the Mojo review with its comparisons with Nick Cave and PJ Harvey but...Peter Gabriel and Pink Floyd?...in others reviews not read yet probably!

I think someone needs to send him some of the other albums that weren't No Rest, TGOC and T&C... something of a late in the day career enhancement perhaps, but Carnival or Eight and certainly NBTS may come as a bit of a surprise.

That said, good review when you think about it. Seems the band have done something very different. It will do all of us good to have our NMA preconceptions challenged. And as long as they are playing the amount of old stuff they currently are live, who are we to complain?!

indeed!
I guess that in 1989, many were "shocked" when NMA delivered "Thunder and consolation" after raw, "punk" albums like "Vengeance" or "No rest for the wicked". ;)
It is always good when Artists with a big A don't rest on their laurels. :)

Hey Jibbs - Thanks for posting.  Not only did I enjoy the NMA review, but I also found out that Laura Veirs has a new album coming out.  Happy Days all around.
