New Model Army
Between Dog and Wolf
Crusty alt.rock stalwarts bare their canines.
Four yeas on from the unexpectedly metallic hues of 2009's "Today is a Good Day", Justin Sullivan's indestructible crew are on typically combative form on their twelfth studio album. In contrast to its predecessor's strident gait, "Between Dog and Wolf" is an album of dark shadows, ominous uncertainties and wildly dynamic ambushes. Songs like the rumbling, weather-beaten opener "Horsemen", the distinctly creepy "I Need More Time" and the haunting, grandiose "Quasr El Nil Bridge" have been built around persistent rhythmic pulses and a dash of ambient menace, bringing Sullivan's usual role of malevolent narrator into the foreground and making his tales of chaos, fear, societal confusion and the runaway haste of mortality's ticking clock more evocative and compelling than at any time since his band's late 80s commercial heyday. In fact, thanks to the sublime crescendos and soaring choruses of "Seven Times", "Pull the Sun" and the simply stunning "Storm Clouds", it is more than apparent that this is the best album to bear the NMA imprint since 1989's "Thunder and Consolation."
Eight out of ten.

Cheers for that, Blink - nice one.

"dark shadows, ominous uncertainties and wildly dynamic ambushes"
I like the sound of that. Only a couple of weeks now :)

The review in the new issue of Obsküre Magazine is very positive.
The reviewer says that it is overall a "coherent, totally controlled/masterful album, great NMA", a few songs are a bit less memorable than others because of the album's long length ( over 1h of recording) but there are also many fine songs ("Seven times", "Between dog and wolf", "I need more time", "Quasr el nil bridge", "Ghosts" and "Knievel", the latter one according to the reviewer could have been included among the best songs of "Thunder and consolation" and "Impurity")
Overall rating: 80% ( there's also a 4 pages interview of Justin in this issue. ;))

Here is my review
hope someone out here likes and even agrees with it!

agree with that. And i knew this album would be very different from the last one. it is. And it's not my fav of NMA. But maybe, it's because i'm more into Metal/Rock music at the moment.

Nice to read a Review I can actually understand :) Far too many reviewers seem to swallow a Thesaurus before writing and end up spending more time mincing with fancy words than actually reviewing the subject matter.
8 out of 10 ;)

Yeah second that, a proper run through the album from someone who listened to it without then worrying about over intellectualising it

Another positive review:

In absence of any singular “anthem”, this album is unlikely to win new fans, but to the discerning listener, this is arguably one of the finest, creative collections New Model Army has assembled in years.

Positive yet a bit mixed, fair review:
http://www.tonedeaf.com.au/reviews/new-music/352266/between-dog-and-wolf.htm
Bradford visionaries New Model Army were routinely questioned after the 2009 release of Today Is A Good Day. Lacking the creativity and inspiration of previous efforts such as The Ghost Of Cain and Thunder And Consolation, the album was a concerning demonstration of an exhausted band running on empty.
Fast forward a mere three and a half years, and the five-piece have returned with the strange yet sporadically fabulous Between Dog And Wolf.
With a resurgence guaranteed by the refreshing influence of new bassist Ceri Monger, the band revisits the deep and soulful atmospheres of yesteryear, and is an exuberant reminder of the relentless passion that defines the post-punk rockers.
Opening with the dubious and somewhat forgettable “Horsemen”, the album is soon redeemed by the exceptional hooks and urgent strings of lead single “March In September”.
With a mix of intricate guitars and pounding drum beats, the album portrays a sense of renewed purpose, and flows periodically between turbulent rhythms and lacklustre melodies.
Offset by the desperate vocals of main composer Justin Sullivan, “Did You Make It Safe?” and “Pull The Sun” are tragic odes that examine the many grievances of society, while “Knievel” and “Stormclouds” are further elegies that showcase the distinctive sonic energies of the band.
Less concise and frustratingly intermittent in comparison to previous efforts, the album spans an almost excessive 14 tracks, and fades cruelly as a result. Nonetheless, Between Dog And Wolf is an enjoyable return that captures the characteristic sounds and ongoing abilities of New Model Army.

Really? I thought TIAGD was a cracking album that was well received. I hate it when people state their own opinions as general fact.

Form what I heard so far of the new album the quote of Justin (that one which underlined that it was nit the typical rock band in a room or something like that) perfectly fits. The songs and lyrics are beautiful and somehow more "
thoughtful". The use of drums is very different they are very much present through most of the songs in a more marrtial and tribal way at the same time. Guitar much less.

The last review is great, very passionate about the band...

Q magazine reviewed it this month (the one with Jake Bugg on the cover). They gave it 3/5 ('good') but the review was glowing. As far as I can remember, this is the first NMA album they've bothered to review since Eight...

That is a good review - they really listened to the album. Nice
"Uniquely, the songs sound almost as if they were composed on drums rather than guitar, though most likely this is not the case. "
Someone should tell them they were :)
