Title: I-pod shuffle
Post by: Johnz on November 08, 2013, 05:19:52 AM
This usually brings up some interesting results.

Here are the rules:

Put your I-pod (or whatever other gizmo) on shuffle and write down the first 10 songs that come up.

No cheating!

Mine could have been a whole lot worse:

Under the gun - The Sisters of Mercy
I'll work for your love - Bruce Springsteen
El Dorado - Manu Chao
Walk - Blind Melon
Friendly society - The Phoenix Foundation
Fill me with apples - The Sleepy Jackson
Fame - David Bowie
Melts my heart - Marty Willson-Piper
New Gold Dream - Simple Minds
Snelsmore Wood - New Model Army

Oh, this became quite funny  :). I was aware there are some children's song CD's in my computer that my lovely wife uses at her work (in a kindergarten). Well there were not those songs in the list this time for my luck. But there are two bird's singing tracks(!) because we are those green "bird watchers" (or how would you call it in English); we collect CD's of different sounds of bird species and try to recognize the species by just hearing a bird sing type...we live in a forest. A bit similar as your trainspotters, but just nerdie green freaks here ;) ) Ok, I add some translations to Finnish names and here we go:

    artist - song /  album

1. Ismo Alanko Säätiö - Liitto, from album: Ruuhkainen Taivas
2. Paul Schütze - The Falls, from the album Annihilating Angel
3. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds   - All Tomorrow's Parties, from album Kicking Against The Pricks
4. The White Stripes - This Protector, from album White Blood Cells
5. Bill Laswell - Voice of Thunder, from album Into The Outlands
6. bird= rautiainen *, from CD Linnunlaulun Suomi ["Bird sings of Finland"]
7. bird= punajalkaviklo **, from CD Laulava Lintukirja ["The Singing Book of Birds"]
8. Laila Kinnunen - Apassi, from album Laila Kinnunen compilation [Apache cover in Finnish from 60's]
9. Accordion Tribe - Tuttuni, from album Sea of Reeds
10. Bill Laswell - Raag Sohni, from album Sacred System - Nagual Site

* = accentedor
** = red legged water strider

Rusco you are a "Twitcher"  :D I think that is what we call birdwatchers in England.

I browsed some results with the word; here (http://www.theguardian.com/notesandqueries/query/0,5753,-20086,00.html), and yea you're right.  :)

PS: There's also a song (http://www.google.fi/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CCkQtwIwAQ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DKopwsTJ7sLs&ei=KstlVL31OqHfywPH1oLgBw&usg=AFQjCNHnSfl-cvQidpWdK7YrLSfnFckL4g&bvm=bv.79142246,d.bGQ) named by us, and the chorus goes: "All hell breaks loose... Twitching Hooouurr!!!" \m/ ;D

PPS. Well, honestly the name means quite similar hobby as in the Guardian article like about learning to recognize birds by their outlooks, by their sing and protecting them; joining different organisations like Birdlife. Giving hints about where they seem to compete and what kind of ecotypes makes a succesful hatching etc. etc... BUT the latter part of the article is a bit pigeonholing them as fanatical freaks who cause only harm to the animals. I know, I've heard some cases where twitchers have rushed to see some rare bird species and then it flees away. That's ridiculous and idiotic I think. I & my wife are actually just feeding the birds at our place as well as trying to recognise as many as we could.

Digitizing my whole cd and lp collection is one of my upcoming projects, might be more than 800 GB .mp3 and many hours work....
Do you use vlc for it, too?

Kyuss was done last year (my player in the car works with mp3 cds, but I can`t connect it with usb devices)

I have to correct myself, i'm not digitizing my digital cd-collection;-) i'm archiving it.
I'm finished and it now says 243GB.

That seems much, but my collection isn't that big, i used uncompressed .wav for archiving it.
It did purchase a software for it: AudioExpert. You can have it as freeware, a little downgraded, but i chose to give people some money for their effort and until now it's a very good software.
It has a huge library, there were only 3 titles it couldn't find, one was: Speedurchin-I could get some more drinkin' done
I don't know where that cd came from?;-) It has some good features, like searching for similar titles and deleting the worst quality version of it, it has a lame-encoding device and you can tag easily your mp3s

It says 5889 titles in it, 483 by New Model Army  8)

Hello cthulhu,
I don`t understand what you are doing:
You have saved .mp3 before on your pc and now change them to .wav?
Or you have a real cd and now you make a copy of it as .wav to safe it?

A cd is abot 700 mb .wav or 140 mb in high .mp3 - and I want to save my real cd or lp as .mp3 ...

send you a pm

hey lotus,

i want to get all my cd on a storage device, so i do playlists and have everything on one single device. first i thought about mp3, becaus it seems that you do it that way, but then i thought what the heck? now you can get lots of Gigabytes for a reasonable price, and why not choose the best quality?

i also bought a micro sd card for 35€ for my mobile, with 200GB and now changed all my mp3s to wav and it ist a difference! i have my phone running on shuffle, connected to my stereo and it makes a difference.

i also want to archive and store my lps, but i'm searchin for a better vinyl player than mine and i will do it with a friends, when i have time for it.

if you have storage and want the music to be played for your pleasure at home i totally recommend buying more storage for uncompressed formats when its needed. but if you only want to have like a backup or for travel, mp3 is ok. but that's only my opinion.

i haven't recieved a pm..?

Always some good fun, letting the "artificial intelligence" (is an oxymoron, right?) decide which music comes next.
To have "randomness" is very complicated, if not impossible for machines. In the early days, when they were building enigma machines and tried to get the safest codes, to have real randomnessthey had workers sitting in a buero, rolling a kind of lottery ball with numbers in it, that they wrote on paper and that was a code to decipher a message, because every machine will produce a pattern and this pattern can be found out by a machine again...

so this is what my random-generator in my vlc-player gave me today:

queensryche – speak
rammstein – amour
the les claypool frog brigade - david makalaster
king‘s x – king
bob marley – hammer
dream theater – perfect strangers
primus – puddin‘ tane
tool – parabola
die ärzte – allein
the fatima mansions – only losers take the bus
