Title: Computing, Gaming and Technology
Post by: Heno on July 25, 2014, 02:45:08 PM
Well, after an ill-fated incursion into Pol's thread on Sports, and his recommendation that we get a gaming thread going, I thought I would start one.

I've always played video games. From the first paddle games on the TV consoles, through Spectrum 48s and onto Nintendo, via games arcades and pool halls, and now with the powerful consoles like the XBox and PC gaming, I've never had a break.

At the moment my favourite games are as follows:

3rd person shoot em ups like Doom, Quake, Half Life and Halo. can't play the COD games and the like because of my colourblindness.

Sports games like Golf and Football

Driving games such as GRID, FORZA and Gotham City

but my real indulgence is in Role Playing Games (not that type Ray and Shush!!) but games like The Elder Scrolls here I get to roam free in a fantasy world filled with quests and dragons and elves and orcs. I just escape and forget. Only thing getting me through by abstinence from beer at the moment.

So, anyway, its a thread, not sure it will be so popular, but if you game, or you are thinking about it and want to know something about any genre, then the NMA forum gaming clinic is now officially open for business.

i should add that skateboard games are cool too most especially since they have sounds tracks that include the dead kennedys which is kinda cool.

I love FIFA, it's the only game I play as time is limited and that particular addiction takes up too much brain space to cope with another game! Been playing it for years now. PS3 is what console I've got. Used to love the Tony Hawk games but FIFA's a bit more in depth and challenging.

Still skate in 'real life' though!
Title: Re: Computer and Console gaming
Post by: Heno on July 25, 2014, 03:06:45 PM
good for you tony on still skating.

i play pro evolution but this year our son got me the FIFA world cup version and I was impressed how far it had come in terms of game play. I can't get the hang of the all the fancy moves though so I play with less skill which in some ways makes it a more realistic experience. I play it on Xbox 360.

do you play the games through like a season or a particular team that you like?

Haven't played them for a couple of years now, they just don't seem to work as well on laptops, but all time favourites -

Unreal Tournament
Return to Castle Wolfenstien

then,, Serious Sam,, Will Rock.

if you know any of them, then you know I favour the shoot em ups.

rtcw is one of the bestest games ever. gameplay, atmosphere and killing nazis. got later versions and they lost the plot a little. i still play rtcw regularly and now with better graphics I can run it in all its glory.

the unreal engine was/is used by a lot of games developers. it was revolutionary when it came out. i played some tournament stuff like that counter strike but online competitive knarks me a little since others don't stay as true to the ideals as i do. better off on my own raging against the machine!
Title: Re: Computer and Console gaming
Post by: Shush on July 25, 2014, 03:44:50 PM
With you there on both points. RTCW was a good adventure / strategy / shooter, slaughtering Nazi and Zombies by the dozen.

When I first saw the UT engine details, speed, and quality, yes blew me away. Amazing to think now  its 14 years old, and there has not really been a massive leap forward from it.

have you tired any of the fantasy rpg's? like baldur's gate or Neverwinter Nights? I'm hooked on Elder Scrolls.

also, there was a hybrid one called Fallout 3 that used the same engine but instead of swords it was post apocalypse weapons

Computer games are too complicated nowadays... I don't have the finger-dexterity to play them.

If it goes beyond UP - DOWN- LEFT- RIGHT - FIRE, I can't handle it.

The only game I've gotten into in the last few years in ANGRY BIRDS... it takes about 30 seconds to figure out how to play it...  ;D

I also found a playable version of JETPAC from the old ZX Spectrum days... that was fun...

Galaxia  ( wait for the M/Ray spelling bot to correct that) was my favourite from the Spectrum days. Like a more developed version of Space Invaders

Just been looking up old arcade games that I enjoyed playing as a kid and I found FROGGER.

Sod CALL OF DUTY, GRAND THEFT AUTO and the like... all I need is a simple, low-definition frog.

 ;)

I remember frogger a annoyingly tough game
Anyone else remember gorf it has a really big joy stick controller and used to laugh at you
Title: Re: Computer and Console gaming
Post by: Heno on July 28, 2014, 08:38:52 AM
gorf, yes

and what was the one that you walked in one end with a gun and it was like  maze, and you had to shoot your way out to the exist door?

frogger was ridiculously hard plus there was no gun in it

never really got pacman or asteroids to be honest. too much random stuff.

Love my PS3 - have played a PS4 and not overly impressed with it...

Currently playing Watch Dogs which is very good, latest Tomb Raider was excellent, also big fan of GTAs - anything 3rd person really.

old arcade game Nemesis the one where you collected lots of power up to your spaceship

Yeah, I like to play in career mode. I always find the lowest ranked team in League 2 at the hardest level!! I do play online a bit but prefer the career mode experince. Never really got into Pro-Evo as it doesn't have the complete package like FIFA.

yes, PES does fall short on the branding but i find the motion and graphics engine to be better....at least up until this version.

i'm playing fifa world cup 2014 from EA at the moment. its cool and has changed my perception a little. i have a dilemma now as i am not sure which one to go with for the new season. maybe fifa for once. i have had fifa since '95 and pes since it was International Superstar Soccer Pro Evolution back in the day. every version of PES. maybe i need to broaden my horizons

I'm sort of old fashioned with PC games. You know Taito games? That was an old legendary Japanese corporation that designed games since 50's. Their well known products were an early series of Space Invaders games, Volfied, Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands etc etc.

I also like classic puzzle games like reversi. It's a pity that Windows didn't continue with reversi as a bundle product within their software systems after XP...

Atari was for rich kids! Family friends had one and I used to like playing Missile Command.

I did have a ZX 81 and then an Acorn Electron: Donkey Kong, Defender, Scramble, Frogger and some space game I can't remember the name of but might be Elite (?). Then got bored and till last week nothing else - I think I'd be a good assassin in real life  ;D

yeah, i got an atari off a mate and those games ring a bell including elite.

you can get emulators online that allow you to load the proms from the old arcade and console games and you can then play them on a pc

defender was a game i loved

i play as a ranger but try and develop sneak/stealth and Bow & Arrow in Skyrim. But I have companions which hang out with me so I can't do assassin type quests very easily.

Not played any for years.

Used to have a ZX Spectrum with all the usual games swaps and playground rivalries (a mate did actually have an Oric!).   Too many games to mention but I did used to like the simplistic yet frenzied nature of Halls of the Things.

Later it was SEGA Mega drive.  Sensible Soccer was my main game and we used to have a lunchtime league going at my place when I lived right opposite work for a time.  We all got very good at it.

I did own a PS1 but never really got into the more complicated footy games on there and later platforms.

The last games that I've spend time playing would be Age of Empires/Kings and Rome Total War but even these are probably 10 years ago now.

I did once complete Valhalla via a Spectrum emulator  with the full map, as it used to annoy me that I could never find all the artefacts.  I also downloaded Lords of Midnight to my phone but have never bothered with it again.

I've never really had the time to get into these massive multiplayer online gaming environments, maybe when I've retired!

Gotta agree with some folks here, my Windows version works perfectly, why upgrade?

Hughie, can you recommend a good, bug free Speccy emulator?

I can't remember which one it was but it seemed to work okay. I think the icon was a graphic of Clive Sinclair's head.  It might even have been called Clive or Klive.

I realise most of us are in the Middle ages.....has anyone been taken in by Pokemon Go yet? I havent got it nor will I, but fantastically clever idea. My 26 yr old trainee is hooked and I got a bit excited when he was close to a Jigglypuff. Kinda part of my eldests child hood so fond memories for me.

I keep hearing about Pokémon Go and I have utterly no idea what it is... and I'm fine with that.   ;)

'He was close to a Jigglypuff'...

Now there's a sentence you don't hear every day...  ;D

Been a lot about Pokémon go in the news the last few days, some guy in new Zealand packing in his job and travelling 100s of miles around remote islands and some nutter falling off a cliff all in the search of something I don't quite understand

Don't get this Pokemon Go thang - Pokemon was a game my lad played when he was under 10, now it seems like there's "grown ups" playing it and somehow it's morphed into the real world. Confused  ???

I thought me and my small boy might enjoy Pokemon Go, so I've downloaded it yesterday.  However, the game is so overwhelmed with new users trying to register, we're not live yet. I'll let you know how it goes...
