Title: Instrumental tracks...
Post by: Master Ray on August 01, 2014, 10:51:31 PM
So... I love instrumental music.  Songs are great and all, but they tell you what the tune is all about... whereas an instrumental tune lets you figure it out for yourself and let you put your own experiences and thoughts onto what you're listening to...

... so, with that in mind, what instrumental tunes do you like?   :(

Here's a few of my faves...

Gary Moore, 'The Loner'....  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paRWL_zQPdY

Metallica, 'Orion'...  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8qrwON1-zE

Simple Minds, 'Themes For Great Cities'...  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJDx-1L3V9U

David Bowie - 'Speed Of Life'...  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hkyp6HCqrs4

and, I bloody love this cheesy, gorgeous tune, The Tornados, 'Telstar'... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBYdp84AwuU

What instrumental tunes do you love...?   :(

Simple Minds, 'Themes For Great Cities'...  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJDx-1L3V9U

Love it. One of my favourite SM tracks

The Sisters of Mercy's 'Untitled' is another one I really love: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sINOUDbg9HY
I know it's mostly a Dominion reprise but it takes on a life all of it's own, I find.

And on a similar note, David Gilmour's 'Red Sky at night': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bj6W8Xpb5o

'Seaworld', a nice summery tune by NZ's Phoenix Foundation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrFy07npswM

Johnz, if you like that SM track, you might want to check out the new Manic Street Preachers album, 'Futurology'... VERY influenced by that era of SM.  Even if you're not a fan of the band they've always said that the likes of TFGC was a favourite.

Here's a link to a 23 minute sampler... you should deffo check this album out, it's my favourite of the year so far for me...

Oh that sounds really interesting. Thanks for that. I kinda lost track of the Manics a little while ago. I'll have a listen to the sampler when I get back to my own computer. I do remember them citing early SM as an influence in an interview ages ago which surprised me because I really don't hear it.

Moby - 'My Weakness'...

Not usually a huge fan of instrumentals tbh. I think the singers just being lazy. However

Dick Dale and the Deltones- Misirilou. Choon. Check the entry on wikipedia about it. Fascinating.

Pol, I ALWAYS have time for the Pogues...

I think I've previously said that my three favourite bands are NMA, The Smiths and the Manic Street Preachers... it's a toss-up between The Pogues and The Sisters Of Mercy as to who gets fourth place...

Nine Inch Nails - Leaving Hope (Still)
M83 - Lower Your Eyelids To Die With The Sun (Before The Dawn Heals Us)
Ólafur Arnalds - 3055 (Eulogy For Evolution)

Just getting into an Icelandic band called Sigur Ros...

I discovered Sigur Rós a few years ago and I instantly fell in love with them. If you like their music try to see them live. Had the luck to be able to see them twice and each time it was a mind blowing experience.

Cheers, Guido, like I said I'm just getting into them, any advice as to favourite albums?  There's about six or so..?

Good call on M83.  Only got two of their albums, 'Before The Dawn Heals Us' and 'Saturday = Youth', really like them both.  Can't believe I didn't bother to see them at a small club a few years back when I had the chance.   :-[

The album that did the trick for me was "()", still my favorite one. Popplagið (or "Untitled 8") is part of that album - a killer track and the regular closer of a Sigur Rós concert (you get an idea why if you watch the following clip):

http://youtu.be/gZVw6rHw5jQ

The most accessible album (in my opinion) is Takk, which also features the well known Hoppípolla (you mentioned the instrumental version in one of your previous posts). Some really great tunes on that album, too.

I also recommend to give their DVD "Heima" a try. Great (stripped down) versions of some of their best songs played live in sometimes strange but beautiful locations all over their home country Iceland.

I saw them live in Cologne in 2012. Superb gig. Back then I uploaded some clips I recorded to YouTube:

Try also their (or better: his) latest album "Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming". Great stuff.

For some reason i have a hard time getting into instrumental tracks. It really depends on the instruments and if it can hold my attention.

However Tamacun by Rodrigo Y Gabriela.
It's just ******* amazing. It's just two guitars that sound like so much more!

Don't be mistaken - I've never heard a Sigur Rós song on popular german radio. It's filled with lots of rubbish from what is called "the charts" (bah).

Anything by Karma To Burn  ;) Pretty much everything they have ever done is instrumental and most song titles are just numbers e.g. 20, 34 etc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxGD45SK08o

They are just finishing a few dates in the UK and are off to Ireland at the end of this month.

Great band if you like it a little bit heavier

[...] Don't be mistaken - I've never heard a Sigur Rós song on popular german radio. It's filled with lots of rubbish from what is called "the charts" (bah).

The charts are playing everywhere. But besides that, there are some great pearls among shitty stations. I mean some special programs which are dedicated to some certain interesting theme. I for example am listening every Monday and Tuesday evening couple of radio programs that play only blues and country stuff, old and new. Before that I thought I'd known what blues is in general, but was amazed by the new ways people play it. There are sort of stomping sound heavy stuff and even some digital sampled stuff that fit very well to the scene. Imagine that ehh "Arizonaaa...coyote sound" with groovy melancholic stuff that reminds Tricky or Massive Attack or something.  :) Could be instrumental movie soundtrack.

On the other hand I like a lot some movie soundtracks: Bill Laswell's soundtrack to the film Broken Vessels, Vangelis soundtrack to Bladerunner, or 13th Warrior soundtrack and of course Pulp Fiction soundtrack which contains some intrumentals too.

Difficulties to sleep or just need to calm down? Try some dark jazz... Bohren & der Club of Gore, any of their albums works perfectly, I got into them when I heard the ''Black Earth'' album... Music that slows down my breathing... Hope you'll enjoy  :)
