Title: Between blood and wine cd
Post by: Pazza on September 06, 2014, 01:34:39 PM
Well it's here, beautifully packaged, suitably redolent artwork by Joolz, all the songs are great, a nice mix of some back to the future old school NMA together with some further BDAW style stuff, well happy, this will be on the car stereo for most of the autumn for sure :-)

Angry Planet is just the best song they've put out in ages - It's a belter of a song.

Well, it's better than BDAW, I'll give it that.  Still not a favourite yet, but I can see this one getting played a little more regularly than BDAW.

Limited vinyl space, that age old album length limited of old?

I've heard only 2 of the new songs yet, but I think that with Wine & Blood it's still something what BDAW brought to us everyone; something they found - a celebration - and continued it; which is yet coming to us now and in the future.  :)

I find the new songs a bit patchy, to be honest. A bit of an odd mix. Some great tunes, some not so great IMHO. Lots of bits that remind me of previous songs and albums. Like a mini Lost Songs of the last 10 years almost. But it's early days yet so I may well change my mind on some of the 'problem songs'.

Still a lot to like here but not the little masterpiece that I had hoped for. However, the live album is great and the artwork is excellent, too.

I'm glad that almost everyone else seems to like it, though.

I wasn`t waiting for a little masterpiece
I`m happy to get 6 new songs I can love at once, or after some more listenings - or not at all (only 1 song `till now)
JS often said, he doesn`t want to write a song twice, now that must be hard to read, that some of us oldies have the feeling that this seemes to happen now  :(

Once we (sorry, I think you are 40+x, too) were young, now we`ve listened to so many songs, it isn`t easy to surprise us

My last new band I wanted all (cd, dvd, live-clips, gigs) and started to follow I`ve found more than 5 years ago -
still continue to listen to new bands, some songs touch me, some are fine, interesting - but not a must have

More than 30 years and only one song I dislike and 2 songs I`m not sure of now - that`s great (and so many other bands splitted or artists are dead or stopped and can`t spoil their work of the youth/mid age with later things)

Waiting for the october tour (and enjoying the warm september day) :)

I think "Happy to be Here" is one of their best tracks ever. It sort of reminds me of the "navigating by the stars" album. It's not really a rock track.

Songs in order of awesomeness according to me
1. Happy to be Here
I think it's one of their best songs ever. It reminds me of the JS solo album "Navigating be the Stars" and some of the quieter  NMA tracks.

2. Guessing

3. The Devil's Bargain

4. according to you

5. Angry Planet -
This seems to be the immediate favorite of most fans. It's one of the heavier NMA tracks and reminded me of Here some the war. However i am not the biggest of heavy rock fans. They are great live but if you are a smaller person toward the front, it's best to cover your head to prevent a head injury.  ;D

6. Sunrise  -
It will take some time and eventually grow on me.

I like the entire album though. I am not 40+ (more like 30-    ;) )  so may be easier to impress. Just think of it like this...  Your least favorite NMA song is far better than the best track of 90 percent of bands in existence. or maybe i am just overly excitable.

Maybe it was inevitable that I would be a little bit disappointed after the awesomeness of BDAW. And don't get me wrong, I don't think it's bad ('Happy to be here' is worth the purchase alone), I just got so used to 'awesome' that 'good' feels like a bit of a disappointment. In my mind, I have now decided that it is a mini Lost Songs (whether that's true or not) and as such it works for me.

According to you: Cool intro into a heavy rolling beat. Bluesy Dancey singy song. Excellent backing/harmony vocals. Is that the street preacher from High again?

Angry Planet:Dirty, Fuzzy, Stomping,Driving, Trippy, Squiggly. Fracking Love It!  Just gets bigger and better
is that an echo of White Coats as the instrumental bit starts to pick up again? Then it gets a bit Ozrics, helium vocals & psycho wig out before kicking back in again. 7 billion and counting, monkey tribes, zombie hordes. Man there's some class lyrics in this one. Yet again JS puts to paper some deep feeling you hadn't quite put your own finger on. Quality. Heavy, dirty, angry. Can't wait to hear this one kick off at Nottingham.

Guessing:Loved it already. Another slice of Dance Rock from the get go. Feels a sibling to March In September, Energy, Passion, Gorgeous background Guitar Tracks.

Happy To Be Here: Very much in the vein of NBTS. Can see where the Doors comments came from in one review. Lovely and reflective.

Devils Bargain: Maybe the one which sounds the most like it came off BDAW, beautiful soundscapes in the background (assume a mix of Marshall & Dean). I said on the other thread I thought it was a slow burner and I still think it is - a lot of layers in there to take in. Like it.

Sunrise: Could be the lost song off Lost Songs! Also put me in mind of Eight for some reason. One of them wistful, positive songs.

My order of preference would be Angry Planet, Guessing, Accordng to you, Happy to be here, Sunrise and Devils Bargain. Like BDAW itll take a couple of plays and ill love it. I think theres a lot packed into these 6 songs and again some of its clicked straight away.

why does the vinyl LP only have 8 live tracks and not 11 like the cd

Eh? So what are the extra tracks that those trendy youngsters in tune with todays technology get that we don't get to play on our gramophones?

I just got in from a blast away and found the parcel waiting for me - Lovely.  Playing the live stuff first - Ever cynical I ordered this one very begrudgingly - £20 for a 6 track ep with some buffer live stuff bunged in - but eat those bad thought words Larry (Knievels real name) This is beautiful - it's like walking down a favourite street but its snowed and its 4 am and everythings sparkling - wonderful stuff.

Thanks again Army; Santa Claus in September.

Ah - just played it a few times and me I'm very into it - I've written elsewhere my thoughts that the vinyl Stigs didn't have to lose out on those tracks but I can only guess that NMA wanted the studio set separate from the live Lp - I dunno - I can't say that I'm pissed off at all - I'm enormously impressed with this record.  I like that last track on the studio Lp - not dead sure about the 'here comes the war' part two track - It's probably good but right now just makes me think about how good 'Here comes the War' is...Really like the live Lp.
Louder please.
Find us a venue where we can smoke cigarettes and scoff a bottle of vodka with this sound and I'm in - till then - well look forward to seeing you all at Nottingham x

Hopefully "today is a good day" and the postie comes to the door with my fix!!
Listened a lot to Guessing sampler on the phone, but can't wait to enjoy it & the rest through the big wattage speakers.
Delighted that I'm going to get to (some bit) experience  the live shows, can't go to see them live anymore as one of my kids is special needs & we won't leave him with anyone. So, thanks!!!

I kind of already planned that this time I would just make a B-line to the Tap N Tumbler pub, no specific time, but early. Met up with Texas Pete in the Punk Bar, but when we got to the TAP, all the familiar faces were there

And can I just say, as the guy on the receiving end of Shush's generosity (not for the first time... drinks in Warrington!) I am also in awe of how people on this forum, who've you've never met, offer you something for nothing... I've had tickets for NMA gigs offered for free, not to mention someone else offering me a copy of the new album (cheers again, M...) ...

Can't wait for Nottingham... please, lets get as many folks there in the pub before the gig. Lets have a few drinks beforehand and them steam over there, mob-handed, and watch the streets scatter before us...  ;D

Arrived in Canadian mailboxes yesterday Szmurf so it should be close; must say I'm pretty impressed with the shipping from the shop. Loving the new tracks so far but I've got a few more rotations before I can really comment. Outstanding artwork by Joolz, as always. Arrived in the post yesterday(Ireland). Collected from home at lunch, workshop rocking all afternoon. Super packaging & signed(not many bands take the time for the little things that can mean so much). Love the new t-shirt. As for the music, well if music be food, then I was feasting like a king! If this is the result of down time due to Michael's misfortune, well, not to wish pain on anybody, but.....!!!!

OK, I'll finally post my opinion on BWAB...

First off, the live CD... it's always great to hear live NMA stuff.  I'm listening to it a lot.  But it does seem to be very close to the sound of BDAW... a few bits, here and there, are different to the recorded versions, but not exactly done differently like we are expecting from the Christmas gigs...  enjoyable but not quintessential...

No matter.  The new tracks... all six of them are great.  Yes, as a long-term rock fan, I like ANGRY PLANET best of all.  It's great and I think it should be opening track of set 1 at Nottingham.  HAPPY TO BE HERE is probably my second fave, deffo sounds like something from NBTS, which is one of my favourite albums ever.  ACCORDING TO YOU sounds like something off of TLOHC, great track.  DEVILS BARGAIN has BDAW written all through its DNA, great track and IMO could have replaced one or two tracks from that album.  GUESSING is very enjoyable but not exactly one of my favourites.  Seems a bit NMA-by-numbers, but I'm glad so many of you lot like it.  SUNRISE... it's one that is getting played a lot and grows on me more and more with every listen.  Not a favourite right now but I suspect it might become one.

Can I just say that the artwork on this album is one of the very, very best that has ever been done by Joolz?  Just fantastic... and I'd love a completely red-t-shirt with the album cover on the front and some brilliant quote on the back...?   :(

Another terrific release from the lads.  ******* love it

I'll keep this one short, new 6 track album is ******* ace, better than the doors, slayer, the cure, all of which I'm hearing, this time the bass is really coming through and is close to morrow standard, the live cd is how bdaw should have sounded, rawer with more guitars, good but not much talk from justin, all in all great, if some of the weaker bdaw tracks had been replaced by the bbaw tracks it could have been the best ever nma album.

Gonna agree that a prefer the live set though nma have always been a live band, then again the live set is new to all our play lists
Both records deserve their separate place in nma history

Ha. Did you make it safe, Seven times and Ghosts are among my favourites on BDAW, while According to you is by far my least favourite on BWAB and I'm also not wild about 'Guessing'. Totally love Happy to be here and Devil's Bargain. Angry Planet rocks but I think it would have been out of place on BDAW.

Just as well that the band just do what they want.  ;D

Have been listening to BWAB pretty much constantly now since I got and I love it.

I think it's already been mentioned but each song reminds me of previous NMA albums. The six studio tracks are great. I cant pick one out that is a stand out track as I like them all. They work well together and "fit" together very well.

Live stuff is excellent.... but we all knew it was going to be!

Much as I'm loving BWAB and Angry Planet is, for me, already up there as perfect NMA, the only 2 songs that I feel might have fitted BDAW are Guessing & Devil's Bargain. What to cut? Tricky, probably Tomorrow Came for Guessing - I quite like the song but probably one that could go if it had to. Then Ghosts for Devils Bargain.

p.s The buggers should have called the album Earworm.

I wouldn't want to change their choices either. Sure you could make up a personal choice out of BDAW and BWAB into one album, but as far as I am concerned, the more material they record and release, the better.

I could get used to an album a year  ;)

A few late impressions... haven't checked the noticeboard for a while...
My first thought after putting on the new album for the first time:  Mmhh... another straight rock album? BDAW was so great because it was different, new, different sounds, different rhythms...
Second thought: Whow! Angry planet: intense, aggressive, magic, an instant classic. Happy to be here: beautiful, and yes, wonderful reminder of NBTS. Devil's bargain: great. Sunrise: kind of simple and positive, and at the same time strangely haunting.
Replace any BDAW songs with any of these? No way! Different albums, different kinds of songs, different moods. Both great.
Was thinking about other albums that came out shortly after the big famous masterpieces: Impurity, Eight, this one... I've always liked those... Really like this one too.
And the live songs: I've always thought the BDAW songs sound quite different live than on the album. It's great to have both versions.

I decided to get the vynil version as all other vynils I have from the band are old sometimes rare eps, mini lps or albums. historic stuff. have a problem with the last song of the side A by the way which ends very weird or skips.....dunno how to explain right now properly. the new studio songs are beautiful. I have some doubts on some cheesy chorus in a  couple of them. but I agree Angry Planet is a bomb.
Live songs good great sound but as I stated somewhere else I want to hear the crowd singing along. for me this is a live album or live songs not just songs played (beautiffully) live. the crowd singing and the relation with the band make me shiver. and this is missing for me. same for **** Texas...........very different on And Nobody Else. This last one gives me those feelings, bring back memories...........male me want to go again to the next gig!

Not enough listenings to this new cd for a definitive opinion about it, but

Happy to be here: beautiful, and yes, wonderful reminder of NBTS. Devil's bargain: great. Sunrise: kind of simple and positive, and at the same time strangely haunting.

I agree with all of this!

"According to you": i like it...a "simple song" but i like the lyrics, the sound and the catchy chorus.
"Angry planet": maybe i haven't listened to it enough but i don't share the consensus about this song... a quite cool pace and agressive mood but too "generic" for me...
"Gueesing": quite good even , danceable!
"Happy to be here": feelings of my favourite Justin work "navigating by the stars" so of course i like it!
"Devil's bargain": probably my fav on the album...quite haunting...i like the bridge and when Justin says after the bridge "There's a dusty photograph i always recall..." moody!
"Sunrise": first time i thought about it: "Meh"...and now i quite like it! a bit of "love of hopeless causes" feelings and "Wipeout" too, i can see  myself driving through the open roads, listening to this song, a smile on my face, when the summer is still here! 8)

Overall i like this mini album. It's good to see that NMA and Justin can still deliver good, fine, passionnate music after all these years...thank you guys, keep up the good work!

I already wrote in the forum what I think of the live songs. Do do not know why but for some reasons I welcomed these new 6 songs with much less axcitement than previous new material.

For me its the song Guessing. Waving at the devil that I know and the devil that I don't. It is just so freaking good!
