BDAW was released 1 year ago. How do you feel about it today?
-
I think it's wonderful. Brilliantly produced and written. An accomplishment.
-
I think that it is overall a very good album, a quite mature work from the band.
My only complaint: the album is a bit too long at times (for example, the ending bits of "Lean back and fall" and "between dog and wolf"), maybe it should have been slightly more edited.
-
One year already? :o
Still love it and the live versions on BWAB made me love it all the more...
-
Great title/concept/production and 7 oustanding songs, but several filler songs for me so a "near classic".
-
Have i been listening to it for a year already?. I love this album, brilliant songs, and even better live..
-
Still loving it! One of their best in my opinion. I think it needed to be quite long to work as a 'mood piece'. There are only 2 or 3 songs on there that I often skip. I guess it will forever divide opinions like Carnival did (which I also love).
-
Must admit on first listen I wasn't blown away by it, having listened/watched the "March in Sept." sampler I was expecting something more "NMA". I think the video for this song filled me with nostalgia & left me thinking that BDAW would be more old school NMA.
On second listen I thought this is interesting but still not what I was expecting, maybe a slow burner.
Next few listens were accompanied by "Oh yeah, yeah, yessss!!!, this band are fresh.
And for the next year BDAW just got more & more enjoyable, one of their best.
Then hearing most of those songs live....incredible.
To think that they have been on the go for 30+ years....masters of their art.
-
Yes, that 1 year has gone SO fast!
I still love it, maybe even more!
-
Blimey, a year already? Gift that keeps on giving ain't it? there's a LOT of layers in there and still hear the odd new sound buried deep down in the mix.
-
Superb piece of work. It'll remain a fave for a long time with me. I made the choice to ask for the album for Xmas and so I saw the songs live last year before hearing them so have really strong memories of that first listen. For the same reasons I really like the live versions on BWAW.

I had the very same thing. Very strong memories from that time about BDAW and life then in general. The tour and songs on the album brought some light to that pitch black November and December.
I still feel that BDAW is, was, a miracle. It's a diamond. All that mysterious peace, "hymns" and haunting melodies.

Still not keen im afraid

Fair enough, Claire, there have been NMA albums (only a couple, mind you!) that others love but I rarely play.
Hope the next one is more to your taste... be interested in your opinion of BWAB, though... ???

I love it!
And have to admit that most of the live tracks sound better than on the studio album.
Also, the version of Knieval that Justin Dean and Marshall did at Southend was stunning.
-
To be totally honest its not my favourite ever nma lp, but there are 5/6 brilliant songs on it and summer moors will always have a special place on my play list.
I've got to agree that the live version that is now bwab is excellent.
I still remember fondly seeing the tour at glasgow was a fantastic night and the band minus Justin were in the pub across the road before the gig having something to eat.

Definitely took some work. On first listen I was a bit disappointed if truth be told. I thought the last few albums from Carnival onwards had been real returns to form. Having heard a few of the songs live I was anticipating another great album and wasn't sure at on first plays. I put it on rotation in the car however and some of the songs started to get under my skin. That being said I think the real Eureka moment came when I heard the songs live. They took on a whole new level and being fortunate enough to attend a lot of the shows across the tour I was able to see how they developed and mutated the more they were played. Lyrically the album is very rich with some absolute works of poetry. The layering of the songs is genius in parts and the production is a good as any the band have produced. There are still a couple of tracks that I can take or leave in truth so it's not quite up there with my favourites, although I rarely skip any, but there are also some absolute classics on there. Summer Moors in particular is a beautiful song but also Qasr El Nil Bridge, Knieval, Stormclouds, Pull The Sun etc. etc. A slow burner in the true meaning of the phrase but now firmly ensconsed in the list of top NMA (and therefore all time) albums.

I think the album's first half (from "Horsemen" to "Pull the sun" included) is especially strong, but there are also a few "fillers" (i'm not the greatest fan of "Stormclouds", "Lean back and fall", "Tomorrow came", i must say)...i think the album feels slightly disjointed and overlong at times but overall it's a solid piece of work and passion, even impressive... 8)

What ... he said

Still not keen. I grew to like Summer Moors but the rest of it leaves me somewhere between cold and baffled. Live the songs came across better but still not very exciting or thought provoking for me. I know I'm definitely in the minority here, but I think that there was too much emphasis on production and the songwriting took a back seat.
I won't criticise the band for making BDAW - after all, they have to make the music that they want to, not the music I want them to - but it's not a favourite of mine at all.
-
I still love it. The songs have stayed in my head for quite a while and won't be leaving there soon.
-
It sounds exactly the same as it did a year ago. It gets mixed reviews but you can't please everyone on every album. Because people have different tastes in music. Personally i thought it was brilliant a year ago and think the same today. Just be glad that they don't make the same album every time.
-
Still think the album's brilliant a year after. In fact, I think the band's on fire, as testified by their even more recent release which is stunning, at worst.
In terms of playing live, I don't think they've been as strong since the early 1990s. The current line-up is a corker - long may it last! I've seen them twice in the last year and they certainly didn't disappoint.
-
Take half the songs on BDAW and add them to those on BWAB and you have an album that I would have really liked.
Still skip a fair few of the songs on BDAW when they come on my playlists :-\
