Just been on the Premier Inn website, looking for anything close (because I know many of us stay at that fine chain of hotels when there's an NMA gig in town) and there isn't a single room within a ten mile radius...  I guess United and City are playing that night...    :'(

Really ? already !!. Can't remember where, but it was a fair distance from the venue we stayed in last time. Might have to look further afield again.

Last November when asked about Rock City 2015, JS said he was thinking of doing something different this Xmas. Plus when doing Rock City in Xmas in the past they have announced it in January.

Also, would you really plan in two high profile shows, in the same month and in a 'relatively' close proximity....

Regarding where to stay in Manchester, the tram isn't far from the venue so there are places a bit further out of town which are accessible.  Not sure what time the last tram is due back but I'm pretty sure it's well after any concerts have finished.

Upper Brook Street Travelodge is just a few minutes' walk from the venue, has plenty of parking and still has rooms (although at £59 so not super cheap). I've stayed there plenty of times for gigs at the Ritz, it's not one of the shoddy Travelodges.

Manchester has a wonderful public transport system. You can easily get a tram for free. Why pay when nobody even checks the ticket?  Plus they have a free city bus. If i were going I would stay IBIS budget Salford  or one of the pubs with cheap rooms.

Upstairs at Jabez Cleggs (the usual meeting point for ANY gigs at the Academy venues) would have been a good choice for that one, but it's closed down now...   :'(

It seems Manchester hotel rooms cost twice as much as the usually do that night. It's strange considering how far it is in advance and the fact that it's not a popular time of year. It makes no sense. I probably can not go but i just found it strange. Is there some type of event going down that day?

I would imagine that both Manchester football teams are playing 'at home' that day...

Evening.

Obviously very excited about this date and looking at options for an After Show.

The Academy is on a major bus route - you'll have no problem at all getting back into town after the gig. If we use Grand Central again, that'll be the best way to get there too.

In the meantime, see you next Saturday night!!

That can't happen, it's either one or the other - and in any case the fixtures for next season won't be released till the summer. Because of the above (they alternate) one of them certainly will, although they may not necessarily play on the Sat - games get moved to the Sun and even the Mon for TV reasons.
So whatever the reason for the high prices it can't be football related. Maybe too early for the special offers of the cheap(er) hotels to kick in?

Maybe things are busy because something more important is happening that day - NMA playing live. :D

Just tried to order my tickets and the thing crashed out due to excessive usage. Put all my card details in, not sure if I paid or not.

An LCG after show for this would be the Icing on the cake.  ;)

That said, as ever I wish you would sell tickets,, or have an entrance fee to cover your costs.-- even if it were a tub for people to drop in a voluntary couple of quid. Its great that you do these after show's for your fellow fans for free, but it should not have to cost you as well.

Look on booking.com. There are central some pub/rooms for fairly cheap. I have stayed in Black Lion Arena and found it good, I will stay again when I land in Manchester next week.

Try booking.com , Ray. Many hotels are booked already. Honestly a big football match sounds terrifying to me as an American. You here horror stories like if you accidentally wear the color of a rival team you will be beaten by a group of drunken ,angry football fans.

That right there would keep me from going out in Manchester that night. I find the American football fans shouting at an electrical box disturbing enough. Much less people throwing bottles. Sorry if this offends anyone and if this is just a stereotype feel free to correct me.

However I booked a pay later / cancel anytime hotel just to be safe. In the slight chance I can make it.

Another possible reason for the prices is that the increasingly popular (and utter shi*e) xmas markets) are on at that time - think they are now amongst the busiest in Europe - will always be somewhere cheap if you look around:)

Its a gamble - as they do occasionally have inspectors on the trams - and due to the large amount of scallies/chancers in Manchester - they dont take any nonsense. I think its a £100 "standard fare" if you're caught without a ticket.

BTW - from past expereince - if anyone is thinking of visiting the curry mile in Rusholme (a long line of curry hosues a short bus ride up from the venue) - i'd strongly advise doing it after the gig and not before!

Sounds like you've been watching too much Fox news! This is just sensationalist bullshit that you've heard. Sure, it might happen,  but it almost certainly will not. You have nothing to be scared of.

The confusing thing is that they have a free city bus. It would be very easy to play the ignorant, confused tourist.

Any gig I am involved with in Manchester has got to include a visit to Rusholme, assuming we are not still banned after a certain member of our party fell through a table last time, was one of the best curries I've ever had though.

Cheers

The thing I like about Premier Inn is that you can book now and pay on the day... most hotels want payment on the day you book... cash is really tight right now but will (hopefully) be better in December... anyone got a lead on any hotels that allow you the same courtesy?

Also, if there might be another gig in December...?

Try Luther King House via late rooms but not booking.com
I've stayed there before and it's nice with free brekkie and parking

Decisions, decisions

I so want to do this gig as i can drive there easily enough

Issue is that I'd have to book a day off work for this as I have to work most Saturdays and I work from 1030pm until 1030am

I've only got 9 days leave left now until 31st December so do i take the risk and book a day off as I'm also looking at booking some time off for the Xmas European dates so would need 4 or 5 for the three dates and that would only leave me 3 or 4 days for the rest of the year for other dates that I would like to go to.

I was thinking about the Academy and thought NMA must have been one of the first gigs I saw at the venue. A quick google reveals that the two shows they did in October 1990 were only a fortnight after the venue had been opened!

To be honest I've never liked the Academy - its a big barn of a venue. BUT the upside is that you can fit a lot of people inside as it is a big barn of a venue. I always thought it was a shame that there was nowhere like Brixton Academy in the North which is a decent 4,500 capacity venue. Though I've never been to the Apollo with the seat removed (in my youth the bouncers had a shoot to kill policy if you moved from your seats).

Anyway - enough moaning - its a great line up and just before Xmas :)

JohnnyM... my first NMA gig was at Manc Acdemy in 1990, 'Impurity' tour... possibly the same gig?  If so, damn, what an experience...

I agree that MA1 is a bit of a soul-less venue, although the fact that I've been there so many times means it has rather of a lot of affection in my heart... it's a shame that Liverpool Royal Court doesn't put on gigs anymore, that was a cracker of a venue!  Imagine Brixton Academy but a lot smaller...

Yes it was the Impurity tour (the previous manc gig on the T&C tour had been next door at what used to be called the MDH - or Academy2 as it is now - a far better venue - though obviously a lot smaller). tbh i havent got many memories of the acual gig (they all fade into one at bit round the late 80s/early 90s - too many gigs and too much strong lager!) other than thinking it was as if someone had worked out how much space "X" many people legally needed - and then built a venue as cheapily as possible to accommodate that many (which is probably what happened)

Strangely i *think* i've only ever seen NMA in Liverpool once (93 tour) - would that have been the Royal Court? We had ended up with balcony tickets which in most venue were usually easy to blag your way downstairs with - but the bouncers were having none of it!

Looking on Trivago now there seems to be a few cheaper deals coming up in Fallowfield, dead handy for both the venue and Rusholme as its all on a direct all night bus route. Not the most glowing of reviews but rooms seem to be going for £35 if it helps anyone
