Title: OK, Let's Do It...Who Is The Biggest NMA Fan Here
Post by: Space on April 08, 2015, 06:01:41 PM
I'm a New Yorker and we compete over everything. Who can get a cab first...who gets served at a restaurant first...who gets a seat on the subway. Nothing wrong with good, friendly competition. So let's do it here. Tell who here is the biggest New Model Army fan.

I nominate Space as the biggest NMA fan of them all.
Three reasons why:

1. DVDs around the globe come in different regions. In America we are (of course) Region 1. Our DVD players are consigned the #1 designation. In the UK DVDs are the 51st Region so if I want to watch the various New Model Army DVDs I would have to buy a region free DVD player. I have done that. I have bought a DVD player just to watch NMA videos.

2. It is cool to listen to New Model Army music...but to actually play it is even better. And to play it using the same instrument the band uses is insanely better. Well, I have bought myself a Gibson SG guitar just because of New Model Army.

3. To listen to the band is great, to play their music is cool, but to actually collaborate with the band on their songs is truly the ultimate level of fandom. With my version of "Inheritance" in which I addded my guitar to the song, and with my lyrics that I addded to the instrumental "Caslen"...well, I am a co-songwriter of New Model Army songs. When I work on NMA songs to improve them it's like I am at Sawmills Studio with the band. I could hear them saying, "Yes, Space, that's great. Play that again."

I have bought a region free DVD player to watch the band's videos; I have bought a Gibson SG to play their songs; and I have written songs with the band. Surely all that  makes me "The Biggest NMA Fan Here."

Wow space you seriously have issues.
side note you can reset the region code on most dvd players by using the remote you can find out exactly how on the net
To the point Firstly i certainly don't have the best collection of vinyl cds etc just have the basic cds and dvds and a bits of vinyl a few t shirts and posters etc.
On the gigs haven't been to as many gigs as i would have liked probably about 25 or so. Having a family at 19 and other stuff got in way. I would say however that my passion and love for the band is up there with anyone else but how do you measure that
I would however definitely say that JC is the biggest nma that i know of n full respect to him

How many times you seen them live?

Five times:

- Marquee, London - 1985
- Phillipshalle, Germany - 1990
- Bizarre Festival, Germany - 1996
- Astoria, London - 2003
- Koln Palladium, Germany - 2006

Um, that's just watching it on TV... to clarify, there's a bit of a difference between watching people having sex and ACTUALLY having sex...  likewise, live music...

Three reasons why:

Well you're certainly the biggest something or other around here but I don't think fan is quite the word I'm looking for..............

Three reasons? Why the limit? I'm convinced there is an infinity of them out there in space.

We're all just taking the piss now which probably gives you no end of thrills (BTW: Do you own shares in Kleenex? You probably should) because JC said everything really.

I would be interested to know how many times 'Space' has been to a live gig in the last 10 years ?
Alright, cat out of the bag time.

Answer to how many times I have seen NMA live in the past ten years? None.
Answer to how many times I have seen NMA live at all? None.

And I am/was an outrageously avid concert goer. Man, I saw The Clash at those classic New York City Bonds shows in Times Square EIGHT times! I've seen just about every band under the sun. From Frankie Valli And The Four Seasons to Public Image when Keith Levene was on guitar!

But with New Model Army the thing is this -- no one I know, absolutely no one I know has ever heard of New Model Army. I'll go to a movie alone, a restaurant alone, but I ain't going to a concert alone. And a New Model Army show (or any concert) wouldn't exactly be a great place to bring a date who is unfamiliar with the band. So I, a concert-goer extraordinaire have never seen them live.

I don't know exactly how many times the band has played New York City. I really don't think it is too often. (And, yeah, I remember the incident in the early '80s when the band couldn't get work visas to play here in New York. "No artistic value." That incident got me heavily into New Model Army. Wow, this band must be really politically strident and dangerous.)

Thing is now I don't think I will ever see them live. I am not too keen on hearing material from "Carnival" or "Eight" played. I missed out on the days when "Space" was being played (oh, I love that song).  I can live with that regret.

Seen them live five times:

- Marquee, London - 1985
- Phillipshalle, Germany - 1990
- Bizarre Festival, Germany - 1996
- Astoria, London - 2003
- Koln Palladium, Germany - 2006

Plus I will be seeing the band live in December of 2014.
That's six times seeing NMA live.

Really looking forward to going to the 2014 Christmas shows. Going to be tough, but I will be doing London, Nottingham, Paris, Cologne and Amsterdam all in one night. All in one night! Reason four why I am "The Biggest New Model Army Fan" here.

It doesn't even matter to me. I don't really think "The biggest fan" even exists.
Even if you never see them live but love them... it's very possible to be just as passionate as a person who has seen them 500 times.

It really means nothing.

Sorry Space - I got you by a mile.

Back in 2003, at my invitation, Justin and Michael came to Nashville to jam at local club called The End.  It was just me, the band, a couple blokes from Alabama, a couple of young girls from Vanderbilt, and a small gathering of "The Family".  I talked to Justin and Tommy (was too scared of Dean and Michael).  During the jam session, I collaborated with them on almost every song; adding lead and backing vocals along with the percussion of two hands clanging together.  For that show, I did something I've never done for any other band: I put out poster all over Nashville, heralding the first coming of NMA.  Thanking me for the invitation, Tommy said that I'd have to travel to Chicago if I ever wanted to see the band again; there would be no second coming in Nashville.

Then, in 2010, I met the boys for a weekend in NY (your hometown).  We laughed and played our asses off.  Again, I collaborated with them on every song.  Although I never wrote a whole song with them, I changed many of the words on the just about every song we sang those two nights (it must have been the beers I had, you know how us US drinkers are).  Justin and I even went to Coney Island together on one of the days (ok, so not together, but on the same day).

So there.

Just a small contribution- I don't post much, just hang around and giggle a bit about all the posts you guys throw around. It's hilarious at times! But I go to NMA shows and I love the band.

There can be only one to compete for the title of biggest NMA fan. It has to be Ceri Monger.

He has a NMA-tattoo. He danced in the moshpit. Now he plays in the band. He is credited for songwriting on an official NMA album, which is arguably one of the best in their career. He might even be on this forum!

So there you go. Or doesn't it count actually being in the band you love so much?  :D

This debate just got won.

The debate is not won because the title belongs to nobody. Just because soemone has connections does not mean they love the music more than someone who does not.  I can not belive grown adults are taking this seriously.
It's ******* ridiculous.

This conversation was had in the past. No fans are bigger and better fans than any others. If you think so, then you are wrong.

Now: this has pissed me off and not because of Space. Because of people who actual are making this a bragging competition.

Absolutely not.

1. Ceri had his bass before he joined the band while I bought a guitar because of the band;
2. Ceri lives in Europe, he didn't buy a region free DVD player like I did in order to watch NMA videos;
3. Ceri is credited on one song ("Happy To Be Here"), I am on two ("Inheritance" and "Caslen")

Clearly Space is the bigger NMA fan.

Yes mate. I commented on such before. to quote myself,,, ---

Re: Top Five NMA Guitar Riffs?

"Round and round we go. I have to say, you are very good at this Space. Start a topic, sometimes sensible, let it run, then start insulting other peoples opinions till it starts to turn sour, then start up another. Presumably if people take the time to pick out five songs with their favourite guitar riffs, you will then tell how wrong they are for making such a choice, and your list is the best. Songs other people pick -- you could do better on your guitar. After all you are better at moderating this forum, can list people who should not be on it, can improve NMA songs with your guitar work, and now have the answers to NMA's management structure and if followed your guidance could become a "successful" band.

I would like to advise my fellow forum members not to bother with this topic. If you do, your choice of five, the songs in the eyes of Space will be "too long" or sound too "hippie", just wrong because Space is always right. Given time Space may  get bored and find another forum to troll for his amusement. "

That was on Feb 11th, nothing has changed. The game goes on and we are all the players

Nah, sorry szmurf, nice story but hanging out with the band at Nashville and Coney Island just ain't going to cut it. Uhh, do you know that Charles Manson hung out with The Beach Boys? True. Your example of hanging out with the band just shows me that you are a possible serial killer and not "NMA's Biggest Fan." That title of "NMA's Biggest Fan" belongs to Space. Good try, though.

Er.......................... A couple of thoughts from my aged weed addled beer soaked brain:

1. How do you know he didn't buy his bass because of the band? And we only have your Walter Mitty assertions to go on in regard to your own musical instrument purchasing history.

2. Probably true but then perhaps he sold a DVD player to get the wedge to go to a GIG (yeah - you know where people actually go and see musicians play) which would ace your materialistic bullshit.

3. No you're not credited.

0/10. Try Harder. Are they still writing that on your school reports?

How is this allowed to go on?

No, I'm no Walter Mitty. I'm more Walter Raleigh -- an honest gentleman.

Look, here's a picture of my Gibson SG that I bought and a picture of Justin playing one of his. Same guitar. I noted Justin's SGs were usually a natural wood finish, and look at mine - a natural wood finish. I bought my guitar - spent a pretty penny on it - because of New Model Army. That definitely is a key factor that makes me "The Biggest NMA Fan."

Oh, and I am also "The Biggest Beatles Fan." Look at all the guitars I bought because The Beatles played them.

Looking at my Beatles guitar picture makes me glad that New Model Army were for the most part a single guitar band and that Justin just played one model of guitar.

Uhh, you lot over there gave Walter Raleigh the title "Sir." You also voted him one of the Greatest Brits Of All Time. Maybe you should reconsider why you have the opposite opinion of Sir Walter Raleigh.

Look, you called me a Walter Mitty. I am no Walter Mitty. I am more a Walter Cronkite, Walter Matthau, Walt "Clyde" Frazier, Walter Payton, Walt Disney, Walter Raleigh...but no Walter Mitty. I buy Region free DVD players, I buy guitars that my favorite bands use, I write songs with members of New Model Army.

Uhh, you lot over there gave Walter Raleigh the title "Sir." You also voted him one of the Greatest Brits Of All Time. Maybe you should reconsider why you have the opposite opinion of Sir Walter Raleigh.

No he bought the title.

No the viewers of BBC who could be bothered to respond to some poxy pay to respond survey voted him that pseudo title.

I'm never so ******* self certain that I won't reconsider anything.

Nope... Space can't do that because it was 'lost'...

Just like that sex tape of me, Scarlett Johansson and Jenna Coleman in a big old three-way... no proof of it exists, but it DEFINATELY happened because I said so!  My word alone should be enough, right?

And if one fault could be found with New Model Army is that they do not "get silly and away from things" much. Not saying they are overly serious drips like a Paul Weller is, but their songs and videos do lack some good natured humor.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age

Sure enough you're right about it, but it's still nowhere near Justin's SG, then my Sg with 3 duesenberg pickups, bigsby, batwing pickguard, 5 way pickup turnknob, 1 volume and 2 toneknobs in a strat setup are as much Justin's SG as yours, hell even my SG bass is as much the same.

So since I own 2 I'm more of a fan than you  :o

Well if you want to get technical about it, in the early glory days of the band -- the days I first came to love the band -- Justin usually was playing a Norlin era SG. That Norlin era is not a fondly remembered time for Gibson, but those Norlin SG guitars sure looked cool in a strange way. When setting out to buy my SG I actually looked at finding an old Norlin. They were grossly overpriced or in real bad shape so I just bought myself a new SG in a natural finish. That's close enough to get the NMA look and sound.

I know you East Coasters are the argumentative, fighting type. That was made abundantly clear every time I worked with a mixer/producer here in LA with East Coast roots. But Im not going to argue with you about stage lights and the color tone of a concert photo, or what guitar MLG plays.

Im sure this is a huge waste of your time when you could be spending it writing and recording more songs for us to hear.

You win.

Justin uses Bareknuckle pickups, I think (well, at least one of the guitarists from NMA does), which are in a different league to Gibson's anonymous, machine-wound nasties.

That would be about 30 gigs a year, EVERY year since 1980... also taking into account the early 90's 'fallow' period... , gotta say, I doubt it.

Happy to be proved wrong, though...   :D

All his space chatter aloof and deranged.

Probably, only Justin has. 1,000 is a lot and honestly I don't care is they have. I have done less than 50 (because I started really following in 2012), some have done less than 10.

Realistically who is to say the person who has done 1,000 is more passionate than the person who has done 10?

I also don't see why everyone is so wound up about Space. From reading this, he has said nothing offensive but a few others have resulted to name calling.

No 1 will have done a 1000 gigs, have the band even played that many, think about it its nearly 30 gigs a year and there were years they hardly played. I bet someone probably knows how many they have though

I was more curious  as to whether anyone had done it. I don't really think that makes them a better person or anything.

Most folk who go through a few years of intensive gig going then drift off back to a few gigs a year - but there's a few people I see at the odd gigs I go to these days who I recognise from years ago who still seem to be following the band. So I reckon there must be a few on 500+ gigs

Agreed, Jonny and Amandistan... it doesn't matter how many gigs you've seen.  I've racked up a great many over the  years, I don't think it makes me a 'better' fan because of that... in fact, I envy the person going to his or her first NMA gig.  I hope they get the massive buzz and life-changing experience that I did... and spend forthcoming years chasing that same buzz!   :D

That said, I have to say that to truly 'get' NMA, you have to see them live.  The albums are great but the live NMA experience... way beyond price.

NMA have done 1566 gigs

first 9 gigs as the Hustler Street band (09/01/80 to 24/09/80)

First gig as NMA was 23/10/80

Gigs per year as follows:

1980:13
1981:23
1982:16
1983:37
1984:102
1985:79
1986:61
1987:78
1988:20
1989:101
1990:69
1991:67
1992:20
1993:71
1994:8
1995:20
1996:10
1997:16
1998:100
1999:18
2000:50
2001:25
2002:12
2003:10
2004:11
2005:82
2006:68
2007:53 * 31 date USA and Candian tour cancelled due to refusal of visas
2008:57
2009:64
2010:73
2011:14
2012:17
2013:60
2014:35
2015: 6 Up to 15th March Reading Sub 89

So for someone to do 500 or even a thousand is going to be difficult

How many fans have followed the band throughout their whole career

Personally I've been following since Feb 87 and I think I've done around 200 as I didn't miss many UK gigs in late 80's early 90's

It doesn't matter whether you've seen 1,10 or 100 as long as you're going to see them

It's not a competition is it :)

Can we stop with this "how many times have you seen them live" childish nonsense?

The Beatles were the biggest band in entertainment history. They stopped playing live just three years into their recording career. Knowing that, how many people do you think actually saw them live? Well, they didn't tour for the majority of their career, so not a hell of a lot. No live dates yet, they had/have tens of millions of passionate fans. This "seeing them live" to judge how big a fan of NMA you are nonsense is rather a ridiculous way to judge someone's passion.

The real level of fan passion is not standing at some dump of a club in Leipzig and watch the band play songs. No, real fan passion is actually being so moved by an artist that you want to play their music. To actually want to play those songs is the highest level a fan can achieve. As you know I have bought myself a Gibson SG just so I could play the New Model Army songs that have moved me so much. That's the ultimate connection to a band. A real communion. Last night I took out my guitar and played "Ambition" and "Prison" and "Ballad Of Bodmin Pill." What did you do? Did you see the band last night? No, you didn't. Who connected more with the band: me or you? Who is the bigger fan: me or you? Clearly me.

A)
Of course I am claiming bigest NMA fan status. I started this thread and said it will be a friendly competition: who is the biggest NMA fan here? I gave three reasons why it is me. So far no one has given reasons why they should take away my crown.
And remember, folks, it's a friendly competition. No one's feelings are to be hurt here. Just a fun exercise.

B)
No doubt my favorite band is The Beatles, but in no way would I claim to be the biggest fan on Earth of theirs. Yes, I have a ton of the same guitars they used, but no I never had to buy a Region free DVD player in order to watch their videos, and, no, I never co-wrote any tunes with Lennon or McCartney.

No, I'm not "The Biggest Beatles Fan" on Earth, but I clearly am "The Biggest New Model Army" fan.

Last gig at Manchester Ritz, just a couple of rows in front of me was the biggest NMA fan I ever saw. Bloody huge he was. I didn't tell him though.

I like the title of this thread.

OK, Let's Do It........Whirlwind.

What a great introduction to a song!

I think I saw that guy in Cambridge as well.  :)
He was not just tall but also rather large when it comes to weight.

Can we stop with this "how many times have you seen them live" childish nonsense?

Why? No one is saying anyone who has seen them X time is a better person. However NMA are primarily a live band (unlike the Beatles post 66) and many people have gone to watch them many times. I don't think it is unreasonable to ask if anyone has seen them a certain number of times.

childish nonsense
Did you not read any of the posts?  The general conclusion was that it didn't matter how many times you saw the band.  Then you have to go on your stupid rant and claim that you're a bigger fan.  I'm more than a bit tired of your nonsense.

I whole heartedly agree. Any dissenting opinions as to why we shouldn't lose this thread?

Well, I say it is a competition. It's my thread. I started this as a friendly competition.

Just because you can't win you post: "It's not a competition." How convenient for you.
I guess England in 2014 World Cup also said "It's not a competition." Do you accept that from them?

It's NOT a competition so therefore there are no winners or losers :) :)

well, this is an unnecessary thread but i think also, it would be unnecessary to delete it. i think it would be like trying to undo it, to just close your eyes and think the outside disappears too.

as i said earlier and others too, the best way to deal with it is to choose not to be bothered with it. space started this and he (or she) is only speaking for him (or her)self. you can try to convince him, discuss with him (or her) why the opinions expressed are stupid or dumb or just self repeating tedios things, or you can just shake your head and concentrate on other things.

i don't feel bothered, or to say, i just very often shake my head and feel confused about how other peoples brains work. but it would be too much to delete the thread.

space is the biggest nma fan out there, so her or she thinks, so what? i don't care. i don't believe it. there are so many good arguements here and some folks are very patient and others aren't, trying to sort things out. this is a discussion board and i think you cannot delete stupidity.

this is surely not representative at all about nma fans. this is what happens if you share thoughts anonymly on the internet. to me it's like being on a gig, and people are talking and being loud in quiet passages. i feel angry and hateful in those moments and cannot understand this rude behaviour, but people are different and there are thousands of them at that moment. and the most of them do not talk. so i choose to let it go and also see it from that point of view, that there are more dedicated passionly folks with manners.

the thread can be deleted, i don't care. i just wanted to share my little two cents.

and btw, if someone not familiar with the music of nma (this is what it's all about, or not ?) confuses some unimportant words on a forum with the art and music of the group and with the overall fanbase, and on that bases the decision not gong to listen, then i don't care eather. it's stupid too, in my eyes.

I would say delete it. It could turn away potential fans since it is the official forum. Imagine a new fan coming and reading this and then thinking "I don't want to see this band live if the fans argue about who the biggest fan is".

"Is it a crime to believe in something different?"

How ironic and hypocritical and sad that the New Model Army fan forum would say yes to that.

I don't think humans ever need complete freedom of  speech. They abuse it too much.  They will use it to hurt the more sensitive and eventually speak themselves into a war that will destroy humanity.

Persoanally, I have no issues with Space and don't get why people do. It often results in him being called names. I have been on the side where everyone hated me and I know how Space may feel.

Amandistan, thanks for your brave support. You show that you are one of the few here with guts enough to stand apart from the crowd and be yourself. Good for you.

But, no, I don't feel hated. I just am so astonished by people's intolerance and childish behavior (look out Space, here comes another penis put down!). I wish the childish F words and silly name calling would stop, but I have no problem with people venting their feelings towards me. I believe in every man's/woman's right to express themselves. Clearly others here do not. "Delete. Delete. Delete this thread! Ban him! Burn him!"

No it's not

The issue is that you belive that you are right and will not listen to any valid comment that contradict your deluded beliefs :) :)

I have an idea. Lets give EVERYONE equal ability to delete any thread they dont agree with, like, they find "boring", worry other new fans wont like/understand, etc etc.

Ive got 5000 US dollars and Ill throw in my whole vinyl NMA collection,  to bed there will be NO threads left for anyone to read.

THEN what would the new fans think?

Honestly - we wonder why humans are all at war with each other. People should start seeking the answers by studying internet forums - starting with those populated by people that all have a passion in common that brought them there in the first place.

I will go on record as not being supportive of anything being deleted in any random internet forum just because some have said they dont like it. This thread was absurdly satirical to the point of being laughable, and it was entertaining to me.

I mean, cmon, there is not much else going on around here.
Im sure you are all decent people I would love to share a drink with someday,  but I care little for what "tv show/film you are watching", "what song you are listening to", "what makes you happy/sad/smile/pissed off", never mind having that same conversation for 7 years day after day after day.

When people find no reason to respond to it, you know, because it is too embarrassing and tedious to EVERYONE it magically goes down the list into oblivion.

See how that works?

haha - ok - yes, let me put on my SENSITIVE filter.

Its great for you to post in said threads. Fantastic. Go to it...That was not a "dig" on anyone here.
Point was, the board is pretty slow compared to what it once was. This is my opinion. But as soon as someone livens it up a bit with something different, its talk of banning people and deleting threads and "what will the new readers think?"  all because it didn't manage to please the regulars here, who it all seems lost on, that if everyone is so universally unhappy about Space and just ignores his words, they go nowhere but down the list of threads.

Good luck everyone.

Some of Space's posts are actually funny. His album cover was obviously a joke and I had a good laugh. It seems to be other's responses to Space's posts that are the issue.
If another member would be called the same names as Space on this board, others would be angry. It's all playground  politics.
