Title: Fan DVD reviews
Post by: peternotbaldyet on November 29, 2015, 11:16:31 AM
I finally got to watch the film last night after missing the Manchester screening through work this time last year. It's marvelous. Justin's recollections at the TOTP appearance where he's laughing about how difficult the band were, Robs wife talking about him, Joolz determination. The saddest part other than Rob was watching Stuart laying bricks and the revelation that he'd never heard the song trust. You could see the regret in his eyes when it was played to him.

Watched the dvd for the first time yesterday and thought it was excellent, it was definitely moving and sad in parts especially when talking Rob. Made me angry to see Stuart laying bricks what a waste of a brilliant talent though he happy enough. Wow moose has been at killie pies lol.
My favourite bit was when Justin went back to the wind farm and explained how the song high was written.

Thanks to everyone for taking that bit extra with the whole package, the metal tin , the postcards etc

Yes, remember watching the film feeling sad watching Stuart laying bricks instead of using his god given talent,  although what he was building looked like first class work also. It was quite moving to watch him sat in the car taking in the lyrics of Trust. You could see a sense of regret and what might have been.

Not had chance to watch the DVD this weekend, but I watched the film last year so  intensely I can remember it all in detail.

Quite enjoyed the campfire extra myself  :)

I am watching the dvd at the moment and I think it's great. I just wondered if someone could help me out. I can't quite catch the part where Joolz is tattooing and talking about how she got blamed for everything people didn't like, and she says: I got the blame for bloody ..... what do I know about that? It sounds like "guitar solos", is that right?
I can't get subtitles, I tried so I could read it. I can't quite catch Dean just before that either. Something about idiots. Just that sentence.

Okay, now I'm off to watch the rest.  :D

I think Justin's cat is the star of the campfire scene! Love how he is wrapped round Dean's neck!

Without watching the dvd again, yes she does definitely mention guitar solos

Thank you Pol.
The cat is indeed great Claire, going up to everyone and snuggling and asking for attention!

I have now watched the whole dvd, it's very good. I was surprised at what Justin said about there attitude, how difficult they were, when they were young. it's kind of hard to imagine now. I liked hearing the views of what people they worked with thought about them. And seeing/hearing how they always went their own way.

I watched the documentary yesterday evening, with a lot of emotion.
I learned a few things and remembered a lot of fabulous moments.
The story of NMA, as tell in this film, is made of humanity, passion, truth and music. That's definetely why I fell in love with this band and will ever love it.
Thanks a lot for it, for being what you were and still are.

Don't think I've posted after I watched it, so here goes...

Obviously, I loved it.  So much rare and wonderful footage.  And the best thing about it, for me, that it was really 'warts and all', ie certain folks admitted that they weren't perfect people... I'd have been really disappointed if it was a kiss-arse kind-of documentary!

I was really interested in the bit about Joolz (she did say 'guitar solos' btw) and how she is not terribly well-liked by certain factions of the NMA community... personally, I've never had anything but nice dealings with her, but I am also good friends with others who, frankly, don't have many kind words...  :-\  personally, I will never take a side and, if it comes up at a meeting, I will always try and direct conversation away if words get heated...

(Even as I'm typing this, I just stuck on 'Lost Marquee 1985' extra... that's oh so good...  :D)

As so many others think, it was a bit concentrated on everything pre-90's... perhaps there might be a sequel?  'Between Dog And Wolf 2 - This Time, It's War!'  (film-nerd 'Aliens' reference there...  ;) ) Not joking, actually, be very interested in seeing a documentary about how NMA sort of split up in the early 90's and then came back with a few albums that divided opinions (and possibly didn't do all that well) before coming back with the bloody loved-by-critics classic that is BDAW, their most successful album in 20 years... I know some of it was alluded to, but perhaps in depth?

Whatever.  It's a cracking good watch and if any NMA fans haven't got it yet then do so at the earliest opportunity.

I liked it very much too.
Three minor complaints: almost no words from the "Impurity" to the "Today is good day" era, and also no Dave Blomberg interview...also no subtitles for the "extras"/bonus...
But overall i enjoyed it , amazing rare videos interviews from the Robert Heaton era, also Stuart's moving scene in his car listening to "Trust"...Glyn Johns is a funny guy!... and i love the trip to Bradford's town and hills...the ending is great, touching and funny, this beach is WOW, i can only understand Justin when he says that it is his favourite place, looks wonderful...paradise on Earth
Kudos for the fine work, Matt Reid!! ;) 8)

My favourite bit was when Justin went back to the wind farm and explained how the song high was written.

It was great indeed! lovely landscape, again

I think Justin's cat is the star of the campfire scene! Love how he is wrapped round Dean's neck!

That was Joolz's cat Spotti Alexander, who sadly had to be put to sleep a couple of months or so ago. Definitely stole the show in that sequence !

Aw that's sad, but he is now infamous!

The DVD documentary is excellent. It really tells what it intends to do. Funny to think what you were when young and comparing that what it was then with them.

The things that have remained in my mind were the early parts, some video shots from mid 80's, and the things concerning Stuart, Rob and his death, relations, the fire at a rehearsal place, and the current clips where you can see their crew helping at a studio, and a campfire scenario.

If asked to whine something about there are sometimes a way too fast moving clips with lot of intense sound material at a same time. When someone are getting interviewed it would be best to give space for them just for talking and not moving too fast to a new scenario. But that's just a minor hint.  ;)

Very well done Matt and co, who ever you are (ruckedout?). The DVD's a gift to ALL OF US!  :-*

I'm almost positive Matt (director) isn't 'ruckedout' unless he's been VERY bloody shady about that one...  ;)

Having met both of them, I am sure also. Unless there is a really good disguise involved  :-\

Now that's a way near to "two weeks" quote from Total Recall.  ;D

Personally, I enjoyed the DVD a very lot.

I have to say, when people talk about Stuart and his new career, I can truly feel him. Although he really was a master talent at playing a bass, I can understand a person who started so young in a band and had in mind what will I become later on. Although the career with the NMA would surely had bring him lots of fun and make him even more famous - I can see what he was about - then.

It's about the decisions we all have to make at some point in our lives. And he chose it then. To most of us a realisation about it comes a way too late. ;)

He just didn't want to be at a stage.

Finally watched the dvd.
Loved it, but think it is sad that there are no english subtitles.
I am from Holland and understand a lot of the dvd, but with working english subtitles it would help me much more understand everything (and my portuegese is not very good too...  ;) )

Nasitrassi, I was looking for those too! I'm from the netherlands too and sometimes when they speak fast, it would heve been easier to read English subtitles.

Just watched my copy for the first time...

Blown away by it.  I just wish that it would have been possible to include all the history that took place between T&C and BDAW as well.

What really struck me was that although Matt Reid is obviously a fan, the film wasn't at all a gushing, blinkered neo-fanzine.

Being fashionably late to the party I had the DVD for valentines day. Given that my focus was elsewhere until the early to mid nineties, Ill be quite interested in some of the early story. Now to find time to watch it!
