Just curious I was wondering what you guys do, which job you have (if you have one) or what you did in the past? regular, irregular jobs and contracts? how is the situation?
-
My background is in learning disability nursing. I teach it now. Love it; it's my life's work :)

Nothing at the moment and, wow, is it a bad scenario. Worked for the NHS for ten years, got laid off thanks to Tory bastard cutbacks, been temping since then, on and off, had certain health problems after that which meant I couldn't take on a sweet new job that I had lined up. After that, ****-all. Applied for so many jobs. But nobody wants to employ a mid-forties loser with health problems.
I last had a period of extended unemployment back in the 90's and I can honestly say that jobs paid better money a couple of decades ago. I mean in REAL terms, not adjusted for inflation. I've applied for government contract jobs, in important fields, that paid minimum wage. Fuckin' BS.
Blimey, I'm ranting again. Didn't mean to bother you again with this stuff. Sorry.

Hang in there Ray, sending strength xxx

Cheers, Sheena. Just needed to blow off a bit of steam. My usual silly-bollocks posts will resume shortly. :)

Im currently employed painting red Smarties after a short period as Grace Jones's Slave to the Rhythm.
No. Not really.

Well, the worst job I ever had.... (be warned, potentially offensive, but you gotta love Derek and Clive...)

I'm a quality controller for a well known supermarket at one of their warehouses and have been for the past 19 years. I no I'm lucky to have a job that pays quite well in comparison to what is available nowadays, but I f****** hate it with a passion purely because of the boredom factor. I also deliver takeaways for a Chinese takeaway and a Indian Restaurant which I enjoy and is a pretty good source for a second income.
-
I work for a forwarding agency, the overseas shipping department. I joined the company as an apprentice in 1988 and have worked in all departments, have been in this one now for a couple of years.
It sounds like a potentially interesting job and it can be - but due to circumstances here I am really bored and am working far below my capacities - which is bad as it also leads to me losing interest in things.
Thing is - I can't really afford the risk of trying for a new job - even if I were to find one, which is not easy, given my age - and this one is certainly as safe as a job can be these days.
-
Sit behind a computer all day. Really need to find something else.
-
I'm a Purser in an airline company.I fly mostly to Japan as I'm a japanese speaker. It's my 11th year in the company but it's not a job you can stick to.Always under risk of being unemployeed next day.
-
Be nice if someone did a job they enjoyed and felt fulfilled in :)
-
I enjoy my job, yes it might sound shit, but there are lots of pluses no travelling, no one else there when I am , do a decent job and go home give the boss nothing to moan about. Can start when I want as long as I'm done for about 2pm . Wouldn't say I'm fulfilled but I'm done a lot more skilled jobs before n I definitely wasn't any happier
-
Well, after a long period of unemployment, I actually got offered two jobs within half an hour! No joke!
One was with my local council, people I've worked with before and I really liked, a Project Assistant in Child Protective Services (Workforce Development)... but it's covering sick leave and might be over by Christmas...
The other was for a company I worked for a decade ago and didn't really enjoy (very technical, struggled to understand a lot of it, all to do with gas supplies to industrial and medical companies) but it 's ongoing, indefinitely, and probably the more sensible option from a financial point of view. More money as well, but then again it'll cost me over £100 a month to get there, whereas the other job is five minutes walk from my home...
Gonna go with option number one. It might totally backfire if I'm back on the dole by Christmas. But the work actually 'means something' and might lead to something more permanent. And the guys at the local council, according to the girl at the agency, pretty much snapped her hand off when they heard I was available to cover this position... because, you know, I'm totally awesome and shit. ;)
I think I made the right choice. If you see me at Nottingham Rock City, begging for change, you'll know I made the wrong choice.
;D

You're so right in it, Anna! Wished it could be a pleasure for everyone.
It wasn't for me for years ago though, so I graduated a different career for me but ended up doing the same bloody work after all fantastic years of studying. The way it goes with everyone? No F(#&! way! We shouldn't do that!
Well, now at last week I've just denounced myself from a job I've done for 5,5 years. I'm trying to achieve a blade servicer occupation. Let's have a look at it.
Bugger...
-
Congrats on the new job ray . Think you made the right choice its not all about money n no travelling as always a bonus.
-
Nice one, Ray. You got a ticket for Notts? I might have a spare...
-
Well done M/R, pleased for you :)
-
Cheers guys. Sheena, ticket (and hotel) already booked but thanks for that.
I think it says something about my love for this band that when I got the job, my first thought wasn't about paying bills or a bit more financial security, it was YES, I can deffo do Nottingham! :D

You and Sheena an item?

Yes we are. We've been married for a couple of years but owing to our busy scheduals, we have yet to meet.

I love my job
I do track maintenance on the railway
Started for British Rail Sept 1989, lost my job in when Jarvis went into adminstration (3500 lost our jobs!!), went HGV driving for 2 years, then worked as a site supervisor for a local college for another 2 years , got the chance to go to Network Rail so went back in May 2014 and left them to work for Amey Sersa as a machine operator but still doing track maintenance and renewals.
Yes I have to work out in all weathers and night shifts and weekends and also travel the country depending on where we need to work (working in Nottingham this afternoon from 3pm to midnight).
Pays well and even better when working over Christmas when we do major works, Im working from 24-27 Dec and also New Years Eve and New Years day >
Lucky I have a partner and daughter who understand I need to work at these times.
Hopefully I can do this job for another 9 years and then retire :) :)

Mate, I'd love to get onto the railways... Idon't think I could do the job you do owing to the health problems I keep banging on about, but even a train ticket collector on Virgin earns a pretty damn good wage. Get's free travel too, which would be nice! Same with the guys who you see on platforms in every station...

Hi mate
For the majority of the time it is hard graft, plenty of time on the shovel. :)
I'm one of the lucky ones with regards the free travel as I'm ex BR, the lads I work with now don't get the free travel
Keep sending CV's to any of the firms mate, the railways are going through a massive growth and with the new digital signalling that's happening this means that the capacity will increase so more trains will mean more staff so good news for people like you that are interested.
Where do you live, close to a mainline station or depot or within a reasonable distance to travel?
Good luck
-
Hey Red, I'll take that advice.
I live twenty minutes walk from a little known obscure station called 'Crewe' (very few trains go through there... ;) ) and I believe that there's a Virgin training place just down the road? And, yes, there's a dirty joke in there somewhere...
I'll keep on trying, you never know!
-
I quite like my job too.
Well done MR. I think you made the right choice, even if nothing comes from it long term, its a job at the end of the day and another tick on the cv.
Well pleased mate.
-
Cheers, DB. First day today, went pretty well, people pleased to see me after a year away, seemed to be confident I can knock it out of the park.
-

Ace news Ray.

Ah Crewe,
I go there quite a lot as we have offices on Macon Road and sometimes work at the freight yard
I'm over there on Friday for a meeting if you're about in the afternoon for a meet up and a pint, also there on 25th for another meeting (union, as I'm our staff rep)
Cheers
-
Hey, Red! Up for that, but I couldn't get there before 5.30 at the earliest, straight from work... I think your first week at a new job is a bit too soon to say 'can I bugger off early on Friday?' ;D
PM me if so.

-
I have been a firefighter for 28 years (1988), the only thing I've stuck at for longer is being a NMA fan!! I do love my job, it can be very rewarding but also frustrating - mainly due to government imposed changes or public sector politics!!
-
I do love my job
Yay ;D
-
I'm a binman, have been for 28 years. I love the early finishes and no stress that goes with never seeing your bosses once you leave the yard.

I work on boats, taking people out to get them to enjoy the ocean (in the hope that they start caring for it a bit more). I'm also involved in whale and dolphin research projects. I love my work. The only downside is that it's a continuous financial struggle. Then again, I know lots of people who struggle financially and don't even enjoy their work so I'm definetely not complaining. I wouldn't know what else to do anyway.
-
That sounds AWESOME, Johnz! Well done you for finding such a great way to make a living.
