The only words I can say now over here in the US is We F**ked up. I am still in shock and after I finish my work day I might have more to say in a stable rational manner.  :-[

That was true for Obama. But Trump will most likely have the House AND the Senate as well...

No great surprise that trump won really. Sure at first I thought this fcking idiotic fool has no chance, just goes to show exactly how much people are pissed off with it all , politics finally got the kick in balls at been needing for a long time. Not saying I agree with anything he says but was the nasty in the pockets of greed Clinton a better option.
Well lets wait and see what happens, will it be ww3, is hitler reborn.

Sorta saw it coming, but hoped that it was my natural depressive tendencies telling me that... nope, I should have put a tenner down.

Somewhere, George Bush Jr is saying 'Hey, and everyone thought I was a fuckin' liability...'...

I'm not really surprised. It's Brexit all over again. People eager to stick it to the system at the expense of minorities, the environment, peace and everything else that they claim to care about. It's the spawn of neo-liberalism. Looks like France and Germany are next.

Justin seems to be absolutely right and we are stumbling into "the age of consequence" ....

Both posts seem to be bang on right and sod the result of it all ............... contradictions though in that half of me is horrified and half is with 'em. The 2 things do seem to be the inevitable result of folks with no other way of venting anger/frustration/exclusion. Age of consequence indeed  :(

OK... Anyone suspect that Trump, despite his blustery attempts at drumming up hysteria with outrageous comments aimed at getting votes from fools... will actually deliver nothing approaching those things?  Just drift along, quietly feathering his nest and the nests of his rich pals whilst changing America not in the slightest, no big Mexican wall, no pussy-grabbing, no banning of Muslims, no change in anything much at all.  And four years from now, we'll be saying 'what the **** was all THAT fuss about?'

Oh damn, that's my optimism kicking in again.  I should probably stop drinking.

I got a feeling he'll dismantle the ACA ASAP with the blessing of both houses.  He says he has something better in mind, but his mind has Tourette Syndrome.
And don't forget about his secret plan to destroy ISIS, which I'm guessing is to ask Russia to indiscriminately bomb cities all over the mid-east.

As disasters go, I don't believe its as bad as Brexit. I think some/much of what he has said was either bluster to get voted in, or is misinterpreted. Some of course is what he means (Climate Change denial an obvious horror).

Immigration? Sounds like he wants to stop illegal immigration. How will this affect the legal movements? Don't know. Will this posturing increase racism? Probably, at least for a while.

Thing is though, this is limited by the term length. Whereas Brexit isn't, and the implications for the UK are more severe.

However, given that Trump is in favour of Brexit, and we will probably go to the head of the queue for a new deal with the US, Trump could be good news for a Brexitised UK in a small consolation type way. May will claim she got the "best deal for Britain" (compared to what?!), ignoring the fact that we would almost certainly have got a better deal in the EU as a large trading block.

I think he'll most likely make a proper ****-up of it, whilst, as you say, feathering his on nest even further; he'll expoit what can be exploited and destroy what can't.

I think he is a shoe in for a bit of pussy - grabbing but the rest probably spot on .....

Probably somewhere in the middle, Mexican wall = tighter boarder control, Muslims = same thing + restrictions on visas etc - depends if any Isis attacks on American mainland. Certainly he has to pander to the rednecks that voted him in. Very much doubt that he turn manufacturering around. Deals with Russia look certain. No more usa/euro state. Racism very much on the rise

I don't quite share your optimism MR. I agree that Trump is not the new Hitler. What worries me more is that, just like with Hitler, so many people are willing to take that gamble. The people that Trump has chosen to form his government are what really scares me. Creationists, gay-cure advocates, anti-abortionists, climate change deniers, the list goes on. We are increasingly living in a post-fact society and the most powerful country in the world has just become its new leader. And like Pol says, he has a mandate created by his own sloganeering. This will have an impact on American and global politics and create even more division. If nothing else, it will give those who hate offical legitimisation of their views and that is a frightening thing. We're seeing the same in Britain and across Europe.

I understand why people voted Trump (or Brexit) and I agree with Anna, that part of me thinks 'good job'. And crying over the likelihood that Sanders could have won is pointless now. It's done. What is important is that we respectfully engage with people who we disagree with instead of living in our own echo chambers and labelling those who think differently stupid. And as with Brexit, there is the potential to actually bring about positive change and I guess that's what people need to focus on regardless of how they voted.

I just don't understand what he's got against cats...

Yeah, I'm being flippant, but the way the world is going these days I have very little anger directed towards those things that I cannot control.  The best we can do is live in this world to the best of our abilities.

But that's the opinion of a sad old bugger, maybe folks with a bit more fire in their bellies might have a better idea.  I'm certainly listening.
