New Model Army / Re: NMA Genre (Genre fluid?)
« Last post by cthulhu on June 09, 2026, 06:54:21 AM »
Genre fluid is a good description. I think "genre" has always to do with identitiy "Trouble always begins with the naming of things" or the search for it, managing expectations, trying to describe patterns or examples for something. When i think about it, it's very hard to describe how i perceived them.

It's been a really long time listening..;-)

And after TGOC, almost every album following needed time for me to get into it, so i always expected something soundwise, sonically, which then was at first very different from the expected and known sounds. But NMA had always the constant, the true identity i would say in bringing great poetry to life.

The lyrics and the music combined tell such great storys and it also was always Justins voice and delivery of singing and emotions, which for me was the main connection to NMA. And in there was the search for identity rather than the conclusion of what they were, the element of change in life in generall, the embracing of ideas instead of playing it safe, experimental sometimes.

And i would even say that NMA are a spiritual band for me in the way that the wisdom of accepting the ever changing nature of things, the embracing of all kinds of influence while still having an identity and having the power of screaming "no!" is an elemental part of them..the process is important not the result...

I totally love Faith No More, could and should have been also on the list as many more Bands i love are missing there. Have seen them live several times and the last time was with their reunion tour, i think 2009 in Frankfurt. What an amazing show! Here you can see me crowd surfing and trying to lift my friend up by his foot, who was somehow hanging upside down..about 2:45 in the video..
Faith No More @ Frankfurt - Midlife Crisis Live

ahh, those good ol' rockin' days, such nice memorys... when we were young;-)

Mr. Bungle is a fantastic Band, every album sounding very, very differently, if you're interested i would recommend starting maybe with: California, there are some very atmospheric, cinematic feeling tunes on it, but all the other albums are one of a kind. Though the last one: The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny is musically focused on grind-core i would call it. Mike Patton is sounding so cool and intense as a singer.
I was also able to see his projetc Fantomas live once, the band consisting of Dave Lombardo from Slayer, Buzz Osborne from Melvins, Trevor Dunn from Mr. Bungle. Mindblowing performance. The first album is a collage soundtrack to the comic of Fantomas, very experimental structures, like short tracks for illustrating frames through sound. You should check out the second album, is calle The Director's Cut and a hommage to Thriller and Horror Films and their soundtracks.

- Mr. Bungle

Do you like Faith No More? In high school I loved this band for "Angel Dust" and "The Real Thing," Mike Patton is an impressive singer but strangely I've never listened to one of his others bands, Mr. Bungle!

Just have seen:

Fackham Hall
- Jim O'Hanlon, 2025

This wasn't a very lough-out-loud one for me, which i kind of hoped for, but it was a funny cool movie, made me grin and smile. Nothing new, maybe they played it a bit too safe, but it has great moments and funny scenes.

Besides NMA, these are some Bands i've listened to for a very long time:

- Frankie Goes To Hollywood
I still love this band and the music they produced. Some would say it was kind of the first Boy Band and they are just products of the industry and i also thought about it tha way sometimes. And they only have made two albums. I think i'm very close to have almost everything, my collector madness kind of started with them, trying to get every special re-mix and it was just about 2021 when i met somebody who had some special mixes, which blew my mind again. And on that release and others there were some demo takes, where you could listen on how the songs were written and composed. Very good stuff, Liverpool is such a fantastic album.

- GWAR
Also a very "old" Band still performing and i think my first concert was about in 1993. I was and still am fascinated about their independance and creativity, doing all their stuff on their own, a group of artists, more of a theater show, not toning down for success. I've met Dave Brockie and the Band several times, made a video to a song and they loved it and there was also a project which was planned and i asked Dave if they could help us out with stage effects and he was totally up for it. Such a nice guy, but also a stupid bastard. I was devastated when i heard of his death.

- SAGA
That was my ever first live show in the Bonn Biscuithalle, must have been 1989 or 1990.
Haven't heard them for a while, but i had all the early albums on vinyl, which i lost and recently bought a box set of 5CDs, with Images at Twilight and Heads or Tales..great stuff.

- Motorpsycho
- The Sword
- Tortoise
- Tool
- Estradasphere
- Mr. Bungle
- Violent Femmes
Besides Tool and Estradasphere i was able to get to see them all live

My neighbors were listening to some pretty cool music, until they asked me to turn it down.

New Model Army / Running in the Rain in Oelde
« Last post by cthulhu on June 08, 2026, 03:01:06 PM »
I was so looking forward to the Oelde gig, it has been a very long time since i saw NMA not in a Venue but open air, i think it was a Bizarre Festival then, and the place in Oelde seemed to be a cool not so oversized place, so i got the ticket, got the hotel and got me some days off from work. The trip started fantastic, i could use a train from my hometown, which went in the other direction, which i never had used before and i always wanted to do it. I used this track to go to cologne for all my life i would say and it started in my hometown and the other direction always was closed, it was a very old track from the past. But they opened it and i always wanted to travel the other direction through my little hometown country. Well it had opened like more than 15 years ago, but you know..time and everything...

So i started the journey in very good weather, much sun, very warm and enjoyed the ride until i had to change trains and then the now normal deutsche Bahn chaos erupted suddenly, i'm kind of prepared for these things happenning but this time two follow up trains were delayed and i had to wait and sit at the station in the sun, not very comfortable, but i wandered around and found a supermarket which provided beer, and some bushes to get rid off it...but the time went on and i wondered if i would make it in time to the venue, still had two more connections to catch and more waiting time at he stations. My cheap hotel was like 10km from Oelde, at first i thought i'm wrong, this is no hotel but the street and adress was correct, it was a gaming or arcade hall, the i found a little sign entrance to the hote in there..and yes, they had a room for me. I think it was abouthalf past 6 and when i got to my room, the door was open and a cleaning woman (right now i have to think about dead men don't wear plaid;-) was inside..she said, hey, i made a longer break, but i wil lfinish soon..i said, don't worry, i will just change clothes here right now while you are here and leave...

When i arrived in Oelde the weather already changed and you could feel and smell the storm coming, walked in the direction of the venue, through the very nice city and everywhere they were taking the outside sunny tables and chairs in and it really was windy, with little branches falling from the trees and so much dust blew into my eyes..then the rain started and right before the venue people, nma fans were coming back and i reckognized, damn i think it's david somebody and he said the gig was delayed for one hour and we went into a pub called summer. It was fun and we were talking, i was screaming let the whirlwind blow and the atmosphere was very good but the rain was really hard...we then later went to the venue, i was already soaked, but the the gig was finally delayed to july.

We then went back to another pub, i had many great conversations and after a while they began to play nma songs..it was a cool evening, but sadly i won't make it to the july gig and i would have rather not paid so much money on the trip and hotel for not seeing nma live..but hey..i'm cool with it.

Greetings to Jörg and Wife and Friends and Uwe and partner..sorry for forgetting names and to those two guys who took me in their taxi back to the hotel..i think i paid the bloody fare, but again i can't remember;-) Hast du Döner? Very funny..

Ah, and of course the next morning, still pretty wet clothes and shoes, with a slight intense hangover the first two trains for me also were not coming, so again hanging around at the station without coffee!!! for hours and i still felt the trip in my bones at least three days later..

But Oelde seems to be a very nice venue and city and i woulld love to come back for a live show, but for this date i just cannot get days off of work.

Everything Else / Re: Which female singer- song writers do you like ??

Izo FitzRoy is a talented UK soulfful bluesy artist who has released three albums. I saw her last night at a small music festival near my place, and she and her band were excellent! She has a great voice, and her music sometimes reminds me of Amy Winehouse. She also seems like a nice person; after her concert, I had the chance to chat with her. I bought her three albums on CD, and I'm eagerly awaiting her fourth album, which will be released in a few months. Here's a song from her last album:
