Live SO36
« on: January 24, 2025, 05:49:42 PM »
My first visit to the forum for the year and I am surprised to see a new live package is due.

The description given on the homepage has me hyped and I am excited to add this to my collection. I was not aware that there had been a counterpoint to the Symfonia appearance. While that is incredibly interesting the idea of a more bare presentation has great appeal to me.  Strip out the layers and let the songs loose.

The 20th, 30th and 40th Anniversary shows are some of my most played recordings, adding this set will expand on them and bring an extra dimension to my listening pleasure I'm sure.

It is my hope that the 2nd night will see a wider release in the future. NMA live are like food to me, but I have to buy food and shipping Deluxe sets across the world is not a priority.

Looking forward to it as well!  I do wonder if this is being put out to bring in some cashflow seeing as last years live dates were cancelled.

But, yes, I do love a 'stripped down' live release!

What exactly is "stripped down" supposed to mean?  ;D

IMHO, it means a live album that actually sounds live!  There is a long and extensive history of bands putting out supposedly 'live' albums that were extensively re-recorded in the studio.  Now I don't blame a band for tarting up a live recording... a bit of a remix here, a dodgy vocal or bum chord replaced there.  But let's take the classic Thin Lizzy live album  'Live And Dangerous'.  Producer Tony Visconti estimated that, to quote him, "75% recorded in the studio with only the drums and audience noise remaining from the original live recordings"... maybe I'm a bit of a purist but I'm not OK with that.  I'd like a live recording to sound like an actual concert.  And I've heard so many supposedly 'live' albums over the decades that sound too similar to the albums, immaculate playing and vocals with none of the occasional wobbles that a live show has and very little of the crowd response except for the beginning and end cheers.

For the record, I've always been happy with NMA live albums.  They've been somewhat representative of the NMA live experience.  Again, I'm OK with the odd 'touch-up' here and there if it was necessary.

Anyway, that's how I interpret this concept ...  ;)

Here's the official description:

"So, we booked the following two evenings at Berlin’s legendary Punk Rock sweatbox, the SO36 in Kreuzberg, and returned to being the simplest, stripped-down version of New Model Army we could be - without orchestra, keyboards or extra drums. With the Sinfonia project, in all its glory, released last year - now, at last, comes the sweaty, full-on rock and roll."

I would never expect NMA to overdub a live recording, it wouldn't be in character IMO. Remixing and mastering is something else. This recording would be as 'Audio Verite' as possible.

I imagine something more similar to '**** Texas...' , or even a step back from that - and that would be just fine. Remember, the band were without Marshall then so there'll be some space in the music.

I much prefer the live LIFE, if only for two superb versions of my favourite Phil Lynott songs!:

The tracks played over those 2 nights lean heavily on the early years. I'm quite pleased - unfortunately there's nothing present that I'd call a deep cut. Some terrific songs get stuck in limbo because the band have so many great songs.

1. Intro
2. Bittersweet (Live at SO36)
3. Ambition (Live at SO36)
4. Lust for Power (Live at SO36)
5. Never Arriving (Live at SO36)
6. A Liberal Education (Live at SO36)
7. 1984 (Live at SO36)
8. Inheritance (Live at SO36)
9. Angry Planet (Live at SO36)
10. Headlights (Live at SO36)
11. No Rest (Live at SO36)
12. Before I Get Old (Live at SO36)
13. Hunt (Live at SO36)

17. Vengeance (Live at SO36)
18. Die Trying (Live at SO36)
19. Poison Street (Live at SO36)
20. Betcha (Live at SO36)

Bonus Audio Download Show:
1. Christian Militia (Live at SO36)
2. Watch and Learn (Live at SO36)
3. Lights Go Out (Live at SO36)
4. Whirlwind (Live at SO36)
5. Into the Wind (Live at SO36)
6. No Greater Love (Live at SO36)
7. Believe It (Live at SO36)
8. Today Is a Good Day (Live at SO36)

17. Ballad of Bodmin Pill (Live at SO36)
18. Stupid Questions (Live at SO36)
19. 225 (Live at SO36)

I'd be very happy to see tracks like Running, No Man's Land, Chinese Whispers and Deadeye (to name a few), be played and made available.

Totally agree! I've noticed that NMA are playing a lot of the somewhat early stuff over the last few years.  During the 90's and 2000's it was a very rare occasion when you'd hear the likes of 1984 or Bittersweet!   :)

Both sets are very interesting - I lean more toward the second though as it has Whirlwind and Vanity present. The inclusion of 225 and 125 M.P.H. seals the deal.

Also "The price", "Nothing touches", "Poem", "All of this", "Leeds road 3am", "Rainy night 65", "Falling"..

At least i'm glad to find these not so often played songs on this live:

1984
Inheritance (Live at SO36)
Headlights (Live at SO36)
Before I Get Old (Live at SO36)
Western Dream (Live at SO36)
Fate (Live at SO36)
Into the Wind (Live at SO36)
Frightened (Live at SO36)

Hopefully there will be a digital bundle available later that includes both nights. I don't do CD/DVD anymore.
