I heard Ocean Rising for the first time in that radio programme last night. After the first few bars I thought "well, quite nice, but I'm not blown away". Then the song progressed and I was. I definitely like the softer side, but the sheer raw power of the early songs also never ceases to amaze me.
There's another, full-on drum-heavy version on NMA's "
Today Is A Good Day" release. Though I'm particularly partial to the much more
stripped back, keyboard-driven version, I do find
both versions of "
Ocean Rising" absolutely
visceral,
mind-
blowing,
blinding, climactically
intense!! It's a fcuking
phenomenal, sensual feast of the senses, actually. hmmm, yesss!

So "navigating by the stars" is on my list. The CD seems to be hard to get, though. It is available on youtube, apart from that I'll just have to wait till it surfaces somewhere or is re-issued.
I'm so sorry for even mentioning the solo album now, because I had no clue it was no longer available in the NMA shop. I know how awful one can feel when there was treasure made, but no where to find it, get a hold of it, in this case, purchase the incredibly beautiful recording. I was also rather shocked that it isn't even available on Spotify, as well. And I don't understand why. I'm positive the album would appeal to a lot of folks, perhaps even many completely unaware of NMA altogether. This is all mind-boggling, puzzling, why it's out of print, particularly because NMA have their own record label. Wouldn't it make sense to produce / release it through their own record label, then strike a distribution deal with some outside company or what-have-you, so that Mr.
Sullivan would still remain sole owner of said art, work, recording. But I don't understand how all this stuff works, as I'm not in the music business.

I'm just a serious music junkie, 31-year-strong NMA/JS/RSC aficionado.

I did however, find the whole of "
Navigating By The Stars" uploaded by someone at youtube. It's an album that really blossoms, in the quieter, darker hours of the day, particularly in the evening right before bed and into the night. Not sure if that's intentional though, but that's when it's most effective, profoundly moving, affective. I tend to listen to it most, then. It's very different to NMA's material, but quite exceptionally stunning, just the same, but in a new, different kind of direction, way, musically speaking. Genuinely hope you enjoy it, flodhaest.
"Navigating By The Stars" by Mr. Justin Sullivan.
I'm pretty sure I went to a Queens of the Stone Age gig somewhen in late 2000 or early 2001.
Can't remember much, though, since I didn't know a lot of their songs. I do have "Rated R" here somewhere and probably should listen to it again.
How fcuking awesome!

I haven't had the pleasure of seeing any of Mr.
Homme's musical projects, in a live concert setting, as of yet. stealthfully soft sweet lol, I've been a bit focussed on a certain other band, I think you might've heard of them, they hail from Bradford, UK.

I do have all of the
QOTSA albums. My very favourite being "
Lullabies To Paralyze" and my least favourite is "Era Vulgaris". I really wish the guys had had something down before heading into the recording studio, for the latter release. What a big mistake, on their part. I've tried getting into "Era Vulgaris" over and over and over again, but it does nothing to me, for me. Bit of a bummer, actually, because I know of the musical
greatness that they're all
tremendously capable of. But I'm sure they had their reasons. I'll still buy all their full-length records, 'cause Mr.
Homme & co. are
massively talented. The man has one of THE most
incredible voices in modern rock music. Mr.
Homme definitely has charisma, charm and that smokin' hot
it factor down pat!! GREAT band. Love 'em!
