I must say don't like the new CD very much, there's a handful of ok songs but IMHO none of them comes even close to the quality of NBTS.
I had the same "problem" with From Here.

That's interesting, i think that FROM HERE has a bit of a NAVIGATING BY THE STARS feel to it at times ("Conversation", "Maps", "setting sun"..)
I still prefer NBTS, but give another chance to SURROUNDED  ;), one week after its release and one dozen of listenings, i think that it is a grower, a solid, very good album...

Hehe, I'd rather have that NMA feel to an NMA record ;)
There are a lot of great bits and pieces on From Here but no outstanding songs (totally subjective opinion, no offence).
I liked Winter and BDAW much better.

I will definitely give Surrounded a couple of more chances but so far only like Amundsen and Coming with me, the rest (16 songs are far too many) leaves me clueless...

I have had and played the album for a week now so my comments (for what they are worth)...i think it is a brilliant album,it takes more listening to than NBTS.....songs not as immediate on first listening ?It certainly needs a few plays to really get into it (imho)I also think listeners of music in general judge/compare the band/artist's new offering against the last album, which i know makes perfect sense......Being a huge fan of Neil Young and Bob Dylan i got out of this habit years ago.. ;D.....I love all the tracks...but my stand out ones are...in no part.order...Sea Again,Sao Paulo,Dirge,Coming With Me and Unforgiven.........ps does Sao Paulo remind anyone else of Leonard Cohen or is it just me ??..

I agree that it is a bit less immediate than NBTS but after 15 listenings to this album believe me you will agree that it is a very good album  8)

Now Ghosttrain can you imagine a third solo folk album from Justin  doing a duet/duo with Molly Tuttle or Larkin Poe?  8) 8) ;)

One criticism 18 years was far too long to wait!

Indeed! but at least the album is not disappointing, that's the most important.
One thing i was a bit dreading was the length/duration with this impressive number of songs (16!), especially because i think that a few of NMA's last albums are a bit overlong at times, despite all their good/great tracks.
But all of the 16 SURROUNDED songs are fine, even the ones i've less listened to ("Dirge", "28th May") are not bad.

Listening to this album for the first time reminded me how special moment it is - to listen to an album for the very first time. You only have one chance to do it. Mine was perfect... The pack of napkins within a reach was also a great idea before pressing play  :) What a ride, what a ride...  :)
