Rock band in a room?
« on: November 18, 2012, 11:26:32 AM »
Anyone speculating about the sound of the new album, and what 'something a bit different' means? If the album's due to be finished by the end of the year I wonder whether some of the songs will get an airing in the December sets?

Hopefully we will get a couple of new songs in December. I have feeling the Arab spring will feature somehow whether in lyrics or sound.

I have a feeling there'll be some more mid paced White Coats type stuff, a bit more keyboard and less guitar power chords.......... Dunno why, just a feeling...... Maybe more in the style of the songs on Eight......... Maybe it'll be a full industrial, samplers and drum machines job......
Dunno, I just figure "not like a band in a room" is gonna mean more atmospheric rather than charging.........
I'm lookin' forward to it either way........

All we will say is that the last two albums, 'High' and 'Today Is a Good Day' were pretty pure 'rock-band-in-a-room' albums with the material conceived to be recorded and performed live. This time our aim is to make something a bit different.

Noooo, now I'm a bit worried. I thought High and Tomorrow were a couple of their best, and when they did do "something different" like on Eight and in my opinion their weakest, Carnival with its prog leanings and kazoos it was their nadir.

I hope I'm wrong.

ps I'm not averse to change, but when my other favourite band Killing Joke did it we had the godawful Outside the Gate.

Still lets no prejudge!  :D

I'm hoping for a bit of doom and a bit of drone ;)

but Milla, you already have My Bloody Valentine for that!

I rather liked the feel of Eight (and also Today is a Good Day), but I suspect we'll have something a bit different from either of those, perhaps something with a feeling of wide open spaces, and contemplation

I'd like to hear another song with a subtle bit of banjo, like one of my underrated faves, Sunset.....other than that I'm envisaging a sonic masterpiece with the emphasis on soundscapes rather than outright heads down rock. Hopefully some more world beating acoustic songs interspersed with a few rhythm-section driven belters. Whatever, I know we can rely on awesome songs, top quality musicianship, impassioned lyrics and outstanding vocals. And, of course, amazing artwork. Roll on Jack o' Green!  :D

Is Sunset underrated? One of the many highlights of Lost Songs IMHO

I can see we are in for a fabulous evening's apocalypse!

I agree - I just meant it is rarely mentioned in 'fave NMA songs' lists down the years.....and as far as I can recall they've not played it live...maybe as Nelson played both the banjo and bass...either way it's a great song.  :)

Ok, I don't how the band are going to feel about me posting this. But someone I know had access to their rehearsals for the December dates and filmed some of the new material. It is certainly a departure:

Arf Arf!  A new take on Rickrolling?  :)

Guess we're all gonna have to wait and see what the new direction may be and hopefully we may get to hear some new tracks at Xmas. Rock City here we come, only a month or so to go (not that I'm counting the days down!)  :)

Am hoping for some folky stuff.  I know they've been there before, but it's just a thought.

I'm guessing the fire/theft/etc will be a theme of rebirth and redemption from struggle - the roller coaster ride of emotion in the songs. Maybe some moody gloom breaking into hope and "getting on with it". Lots on heavy depth, melody changes, mixing in ethic instruments (like Red Earth) and the odd ballad.

Maybe even a concept album?  ???

but what do I know  :-\   ...Except there will definitely be a lots of weather

(other options are more northern soul or they get to stripped down to bare bones)
