I need to give GOTHIC another try. I saw it on DVD, but as I recall, despite the interesting subject matter, I struggled with the hysterical aspects and the casting. So, I'll definitely watch it again because there are some Ken Russell films I like... There's a film I'd like to see on a similar theme to GOTHIC: HAUNTED SUMMER by Ivan Passer. I think I saw BILLION DOLLAR BRAIN, but I only vaguely remember it. I have the dvd of FRENCH DRESSING by Ken Russell, but I haven't seen it yet. Others Russell films that tempt me are WOMEN IN LOVE, MAHLER (Robert Powell is an underrated actor), and LISZTOMANIA. I'd also like to see ALTERED STATES on the big screen; because it's a visually stunning film.
I think a rewatch of Gothic on blu is worth a try. Never heard of Haunted Summer, i searched for it and most comments said it was a beautiful movie but with a crappy dvd-release..sounds promising though...
I totally enjoyed watching NUEVA YORK BAJO EL TERROR DE LOS ZOMBIES - Zombie 2
The infamous Lucio Fulci Zombie rip off and what can i say..again i was surprised how different the experience was compared to my memory of a many generations copyed vhs bootleg..and like 40 years in between..the underwater scenes were just beautiful..some incredible stupid dialog direction..and it made me think about those times, when the italian film industry just copied genre hits from hollywood and put out an amazing amount of cheap, but also skilled (sometimes) productions and they always pushed the "shock" buttons to the limit..for entertainment
Also known as Zombie Flesheaters in the UK and genuinely one of my top ten horror films ever... love it!
Here's the story... in the early 80s this was one of the 'video nasties' and many of the local video stores wouldn't rent these videos to kids. But my mate's Dad owned a video store and he didn't give a crap so me and my mates would gather round at his house to watch all sorts of nasty stuff. And this movie was my introduction to hardcore horror, I'd only seen the likes of Hammer or Val Lewton movies before... blew my mind, the relentless gore was like nothing I'd seen before. Particularly the famous eyeball / splinter of wood bit!
In fact, although I know movies like Dawn Of The Dead, (REC), Train To Busan or Night Of The Living Dead are 'better' movies this will forever be my fave zombie movie.
Gotta love those Italian zombies!
