Summer Moors
« on: September 26, 2013, 03:12:29 PM »
I can see myself becoming quite obsessed with Summer Moors. I love all of the new album, but for me, this song stands out - in fact, I think it could well be the most beautiful vocal JS has ever recorded.

Can't stop listening to it.  :)

Problem is, it makes me sad... in a nice, sort of poignant way, but not quite the effect I want at my wedding! Anyway, we've already got that sorted ;)

Fair enough. I am sure there will be a good NMA presence there in your list.

I agree with you on Summer Moors though. Great vocal.

Although there may not be enough heavy guitar on the album for some people, there is some superb guitar on that song, particularly at the  beginning.

Yup, there'll be loads.

I love the guitar at the start of that track, too. Perfectly placed, well-crafted. Just like the whole album, IMO. And yet it loses nothing in the way of immediacy and power.

At the moment it's the song I repeat most alongside Did you make it safe. It reminds me of Wutherong Heights.

Summer moors is probably the song that has grown on me the most. I went from 'that's lovely but I can't wait for Ghosts' to double plays each time. Absolutely beautiful. Reminds me of Lullaby and a bit of Bruce Springsteen's Paradise. Wonder if it would have been better as the closer though.

Interesting- given JS' love of Kate Bush, I wonder if there's a connection somewhere, despite how different the songs are.

I wonder the same. Ghosts is fab, but Summer Moors is tough to follow, and has an air of finality about it.

This is what JS had to say about Summer Moors:

Interviewer: This area has a landscape that has a beauty and a darkness that some find threatening...

" Yes, I think that Summer Moors from this album has that, it's dedicated to Yorkshire, brass band and all. It's a personal song .... it's a ghost story in a sense. It's Emily Bronte. I'd never read Wuthering Heights as a kid, but I had to read it recently and I found it amazing, it's like watching a punk band, there's not a single sympathetic character in it, yet it's utterly compelling."

It's very interesting.

It reminds me of Wutherong Heights.

The Kate Bush influence is there, also the Peter Gabriel one on some tracks.

Wonder if it would have been better as the closer though.

A minor issue i have with the album is that it doesn't alway "flow", the track order isn't the best sometimes.

Me to, after replying to sozbots post here about it, I went  straight to it for another play. It really is a treasure. So far I have been playing the album from start to finish, but now I have done that many times, I am finding I am bonding with the songs more by playing them individually. And yes, straight to Summer Moors, then let Ghosts play after, oh man, what a pleasure.

if not tried, straight to Summer Moors, then Ghosts --- give it a go  :)

Summer Moors has been my morning alarm on the mobile 'phone, pretty much since the cd arrived.  Too beautiful.  Can't explain it, really - poignant, gentle, lyrical.  And the brass in there is just beautiful.  Knowing - assuming - that it's a pit band, with the miners history, just makes it more of a glory to listen to.
bah.  humbug.
