Influences are one thing,we are all influenced by our daily lives in one way or another.Always wondered whether there was copying/plagiarism in David Bowie's "Jean Genie" and Sweet's "Blockbuster",both released in 1973.The opening chords are identical.

Yeah, pop / rock music has been going on for decades, it's inevitable that some tunes will mirror another, there are only so many sequences of notes that can be played... I remember hearing Pulp's Disco 2000 and thinking 'hang on, isn't that Gloria by Laura Branighan'?

Impurity was my first "looking forward to" nma album. I listened to T&C at a friends and got hooked, then went for the older recordings and then i was so excited waiting for a new album. Immediate love!...with all my personal "nah, i don't like that song so well" nma experience at first listen and them later becoming favorites or loved ones.

I was 15 or so and someone played a tape that was basically Impurity but had far better things, better than them and I think vagabonds on it. I was transfixed and loved it but funny thing is about 6 months later someone played a tape with Betcha on it and i had no idea they were the same band could hardly believe it!

Blimey I posted this 12 years ago (and back when there were a few long lost NMA forum folks posting regularly), just wondering what anyone thinks about this album seeing as we've had a few since I made the original post...

Still my very fave, yes that might be 'nostalgia tickles and remembering how happy I was back then as opposed to these days' and, yes, nearly 35 years ago?    but how does anyone feel about it in the cold light of the 21st century?  What the heck, it's been 5 years since anyone posted.

Wow, what piece of "journalism" that was. I wonder what drove her to write this piece, her motivation. I must admit i had to grin while reading, there's some kind of effort there to make it tough, but it fails that so hard. Seems like some kind of a personal agenda there..

The "journalist" was comparing NMA to U2 and The Sex Pistols, Justin to Simon Le Bon, and Robert Heaton to Charlie Watts!...


If I remember correctly, in the documentary "Between Dog and Wolf: The NMA Story," someone says that NMA was constantly mocked by the British music press in the 80s and 90s, that NME magazine didn't like...NMA! I thought it was an exaggeration because I had found press clippings, British reviews favorable to "The Ghost of Cain," "Thunder and Consolation," and "Impurity," but this NME review of "Impurity" seems to support the idea of ​​a band absurdly treated by the British press at the time. Name me some others English Rock bands that have had a loyal following for years and have been regularly criticized by the English music press? I imagine there must be a few?

Yup.  The NME was an absolute shitrag of a publication, far more interested in fashionable trends (or trying to create them) than actually focusing on the music itself. I fell for that BS in the early 90s and bought some pretty shitty records that they were raving about before I realised what a load of crap those journalists were peddling.  Sounds and Melody Maker were far better... yes, there was a time where there were three weekly publications out there!

That reminds me of another songwriter with little time for said rag, namely Blyth Power's Joseph Porter, who had a dig at them on "Lambert Simnel" where he sang the line "Never make concessions to placate the enemy" with the syllables of the last word clearly split out to be "N-M-E"
