Contact Later With Jools Holland via Facebook
« on: October 05, 2013, 03:26:49 PM »
Just been on bbc.co.uk/later and scrolled down to the facebook link and then left a message stating a case for an appearance by the band on the programme. I think you should all do it...

Here's what I sent them......... If I get any response I'll share it of course.

I've watched Later... over the years, and the Hootenanny aswell...... There's been some astounding performances here n there n some stinkers (Lou Reed n Metallica? Dear god in heaven "I am the table!".... WTF was that?).......
Anyways, it seems to me, and alot of others, the one TRULY independant, in spirit, thought, deed, style you name it, on Britain's, and Europe's on the whole scene has never been invited on? They played the Tube and very successfully too, but NEVER Later? Seems odd......
Can you tell me why NEW MODEL ARMY have never been deemed worthy? 30 plus years of consistently thought provoking, articulate lyrics, set to some times brutal, sometimes tender, always heart felt musical back drop..........
Never less than stunning live, the concert dance floor (Pit to them on it), always alive and a thing unto itself..... A band so graced with a following of devoted, talented, thinkers around them, a film now made about their history, a new chart bothering lp, a genuine worldwide cult band. Truly ahead of the game by going it alone from Major Label influence when they left SONY rather than be forced into an ill fitting box, to suit the marketing needs of the label, and at the height (so it was said) of their own commercial success.......... But no space on Later...? Doesn't add up to me.......
They've consistently sold as many and more records than a number of "regulars" on the Later... roster too....... I'd be very interested to know if there's a reason?
Cheers

I don't understand it either. 7 or 8 years ago Jools was covering Glastonbury when NMA played there and he namechecked them but they weren't on tv. Watched Jools last night and Chas and Dave were on. They were very very good. They haven't got a top 40 album though.

Skratch, you could be right, but there was a Tom Jones documentary on  the BBC a couple of years ago and it was a retrospective of his life. It featured and interviewed a lot of the acts he worked with in the 80's and 90's. NMA never got a mention. I think they get ignored because where they are known they are perceived to be troublesome or something. There is a superb interview years ago with Timmy Mallett that I bet the Mallett still has nightmares about!

Definitely not the case Skratch... there's an interview on here somewhere where Justin states that he'd love to do it but has never been asked.
six on united tonight.

Just sent a message via the later FB page as follows:
When booking guests for 'Later', please give carefull consideration to New Model Army. While many of their peers are happy to do the retro nostalgia circuit living on past glories, NMA are still producing new, vibrant music, still developing, still evolving.
Fiercely independant of spirit, thought, and career, with a devoted global following, and an unparallelled live performance, they are Britains musical 'buried treasure' , making it on their own terms, with little recognition of their contributions or influence on the indie/alternative scene
With a new album that is being widely lauded as a career best, I urge you to invite this wonderful band to perform on your show.
Sincerely,
David

I sent an email to BBC complaints last year on this subject and received the following reply:

Hmmm...sounds like the BBC response is something like this...

'Thank you.  Now please f** off and stop bothering us, we're too busy trying to book bands who will be trendy for the next ten minutes but nobody will remember a year from now...'

 ;)

After thinking about it, I've submitted my complaint frankly. It's utter shite that they still ignore NMA at this point.

I think it's great that folk are engaging and trying to do something positive but.......

Maybe I'm too old and cynical now. Does anyone think something could happen from it? I can't see how NMA would fit into a neat little marketable, "demographic"group who have fans wiith spending power to persuade the financiers to book 'em. Honestly ask yourself, what does the BBC gain from putting the band on? Might be enough global fans to warrant it but those of us who live in the British Isles who have to pay the licence fee probably already watch at least sometimes and they know that.

Artistic merit and quality? Don't believe it's part of the equation. How many of those no hit wonders who had 3 minutes of airplay on some fleetingly trendy radio station have you had to sit through before getting to something good?

Really hope I'm proved to be totally and utterly talking out of my behind.  :-*
