OK, 'Black Friday'...  >:(

Surely just some ******* idiotic marketing gimmick to get easily-led fools to max out their credit cards?

OK, it pissed me off because I nipped over to ASDA to get a sandwich before work and was met with a huge queue of 300-odd agitated people trying to get in, not to mention a whole bunch of security guys and, get this, POLICE (who surely have better and more important things to be getting on with)... needless to say, I didn't get my sandwich.

When the **** did this become a big thing in the UK?

 ::)

It pisses me off to know that black Friday has been imported into Europe from America. This is one of the worst things about American culture. Any thinking person would avoid it. It basically shows just how greedy and obsessed with material objects people can be.

My local shopping center was open from 6pm to 2AM the day before black Friday( the day before is a national holiday and people with families should spend it with them) . Then at 6 on the actual day. That gives the workers about two hours of sleep. after winding down, eating and taking a shower. But apparently buying useless crap is a human necessity more so than sleep and food.

I really feel for you guys in Europe for now getting this hellish day of people acting ridiculous and uncivilized.

Couldn't agree more about black Friday Thank Fck there isn't a shortage of food if that is the way people act over a few quid of a telly that they don't need. Its time for the shops to take note as well, extra security, only so many people allowed in at a time would be a good start

Isn't Valentine's Day also of American origin? Some of my friends don't like its idea because it's not our cultural tradition. But I think it's also a bit unfair to think all "evil" or useless crap is of American tradition. It depends on person him- or herself how do they treat the ideas behind. You don't have to follow the 'rule' but one would suggest he or she thinks good about friends and perhaps send a postcard or something. There's nothing wrong in the idea.

Just edited my typos and terrible English. I blame my telephone, its small tabs and my enormous fingers that look rather like sausages.

Took not one but TWO nasty tumbles walking home from work today on wet leaves or mud or something... first one took me forwards, I instinctively took my full body weight on my left wrist ... the second, not ten minutes later, took me backwards and threw out my dodgy knee that I originally hurt about six years ago, leaving me limping... both injuries feel OK at this moment but I know damn, at my age, that they'll both be bloody painful tomorrow after a nights sleep...

At the rate I'm going, I'll be the one in Nottingham in a full body-cast and wheeled in by nurses...   ::)

The fact that people with mental illnesses are being locked in a prison cell in the U.K. simply because there are no hospital beds. A 16 year old kid who was very depressed and suicidal was put in a prison cell for committing no crime, just being born with a mental illness.    ....and people are okay with this, how? >:(  What is next ? electric shock  therapy again?  ???

Basically the U.K. needs to have a massive protest and this unethical treatment but they probably will not. Because in reality nobody cares. Despite what it is said, the general public is embarrassed to discuss it when it is serious. They give evil looks at anyone suffering a public episode. It can be crying, panic attacks getting over-loaded with frustration and appearing angry. This seems to be ridiculed and nobody ever thinks about what it is like to live with that everyday.
In the end, it's just something that costs the world governments money.

Don't think you would find many people who are ok with that!
But what else could they do with no bed available and the young person needing to be detained under a mental health section.
Not ideal by anyone's standards, but at least he or she ( was it a young girl?) was safe and I understand that mental health nurses were caring for her in the police station.
Very difficult decisions are being made every day in an NHS which is in constant crisis. This is an extreme case and yes it is appealing.

Do agree with the second part of your post, maybe that is the British stiff upper lip coming to the fore........ I do think mental health is very low on the agenda and still a very taboo topic.
I work in an acute NHS hospital ( the one that is always on the news..... >:( ) and we struggle to get any help for patients with acute mental health issues

What we read in the media especially when we live on a continent on the other side of an Ocean will be FAR removed from the truth of an issue.  What sounds utterly barbaric on a simplistic reading of events may in fact be the only possible solution at any given time - You (we) Weren't There.

I'm sorry but I find your sweeping statements regarding the British population somewhat offensive. According To You this is Us: "Because in reality nobody cares" .  Sorry but how on earth would you know? If I dropped a post on here stating that Americans couldn't give a **** about anyone but themselves you would quite rightly pull me up on it and put me in my place............... And to be honest I think someone from the United States should consider their words a bit carefully before telling another nation how to deal with Mental Illness.

I did not mean only the British population but the world. It's just as bad in America. The massive protest comment was directed at the UK because that's where the news story takes place. Probably most of the world's countries don't want to deal with mental health.

I think the solution would be to have more spaces in hospitals. Putting someone like that in a prison would likely be illegal in the U.S.. they would overfill a hospital first but only because of possible lawsuits.

I admit that I word things poorly very often.

Trapping my dog's tail in the door, cutting off the tip and a bit of the last tailbone and de-gloving about an inch of his tail.  He's got to go for an operation on Monday and have at least another two inches of bone removed and a flap of skin sewn over it.  I'm absolutely gutted - I feel really awful about doing that (albeit accidentally) to such a loving and loyal friend.
