So... METAL... your opinions?

 You Know Before it was called Heavy Metal it was Known as Hard Rock so Bands like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, MC5, Iggy & The Stooges, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Mountain, Rainbow were the bands that  would be considered  Heavy Metal back in the Day. and Yes I loved those bands . Now that you have many sub groups that go from Speed metal, Black Metal, Death Metal etc there are a lot more bands that fit into these sub groups. As for me Yeah I like some of the Metal bands as a Bass Player I like to hear and copy some of the bass parts of some of the bands. I listen to Maiden and Fear Factory, Motorhead,Metallica and a few others.

Well said - Hard Rock and Heavy Metal isn`t Metal yet, Volbeat for me is  Hard Rock, Nightwish is new kind of Metal
I love the old ones, Volbeat is ok and sometimes I play Nightwish, Rammstein or some of the bands now labeled as kind of metal

Mmm, I've heard a few of their songs on the radio, but I struggle with the fact that their vocalist seems to have styled his delivery on James Hetfieldisms. It works with James, but sounds a bit too derivative with Volbeat for me. Still, I believe they're very popular.

Interesting. I hadnt really looked at it that way. Id just assumed that it was as a result of him being Danish. I can hear the similarities and I know they draw on a lot of influences. Only really just found them out. Cant say I like it all but some of its really good. Not that keen on Hetfields ah's at the end of wordsah lol

That's exactly what I was driving at !    I don't mind it with James as he's always done it, but with Volbeat, it sounds like their singer is trying to copy James, and does it just a bit too much for my liking !  Unfortunately my head won't let me get past that and it puts me off. I do find that sometimes - just one little thing can put me off what is otherwise a great band !

I kinda fell outta love with metal in my late teens, in the last 10 years tho it probably been the mainstay of my listening ( with the exception of NMA of course)
 Airbourne, Maiden, Metallica , Suidakra, Machine Head - Trivium have become a personal Fave. I have also really got into Delain, Nightwish , Within Temptation(who I was fortunate enough to see live recently  with Delain)

I was a big fan of Metal in my teenage years, my favourite bands were Suicidal Tendencies, Infectious Grooves, Danzig, Jane's addiction...now i'm more a rock/blues/soundtracks fan but i like listening from time to time albums of Deep Purple, The Cult, Suicidal Tendencies, Jane's addiction, AC/DC, etc
Thin Lizzy is my favourite "metal" band i think.

I'm a bit late to the party here but yeah I used to love that metal when I was a kid - I left it for years and then rediscovered it a good five or so years ago - I was suprised at how some of the stuff I'd written off as neanderthal kid music is really very good stuff - Judas Priest and Scorpions and the pre Joe Lynne Turner Rainbow stuff,  Diamond Head, Tank, I even listen to those early Whitesnake albums these days - I like 'em more now than I did then. All good stuff...There's some stuff that I can't listen to since I quit amphetamines - Hanoi Rocks and Aerosmith and others - I loved 'em in the last few years of heavy phet use but they don't go with the mood of today - The ones that worked with acid still work for me today but not the 'phet stuff - still can't bring myself to part with the records though.

Metal has become such a massive genre with so many sub-genres that I'm sure you could find quite a few bands that most "non-metal" fans would absolutely love.

I grew up with metal.  That's where my love for music first began so it'll always be something I take with me.  I'm not listening to it as much these days though.  Part of the problem with so many sub-genres in metal is that there are simply too many bands today.  Too many average bands that are doing nothing original makes it hard to find the real gems.  So I usually tend to mostly listen to the old favorites.

Rammstein have never done a bad video, get thee onto Youtube and check them all out...  you might have to go 'elsewhere' for the uncut PUSSY video but it's worth it, very funny...

I don't speak any German either... a friend of mine who speaks the language translated a few tracks for me... I was a bit disappointed how simplistic the lyrics were... no matter.  If you ever get a chance to see them live, do so, one of the best live bands I've ever seen, spectacular...
