Computing, Gaming and Technology
« on: July 25, 2014, 02:45:08 PM »
Well, after an ill-fated incursion into Pol's thread on Sports, and his recommendation that we get a gaming thread going, I thought I would start one.

I've always played video games. From the first paddle games on the TV consoles, through Spectrum 48s and onto Nintendo, via games arcades and pool halls, and now with the powerful consoles like the XBox and PC gaming, I've never had a break.

At the moment my favourite games are as follows:

3rd person shoot em ups like Doom, Quake, Half Life and Halo. can't play the COD games and the like because of my colourblindness.

Sports games like Golf and Football

Driving games such as GRID, FORZA and Gotham City

but my real indulgence is in Role Playing Games (not that type Ray and Shush!!) but games like The Elder Scrolls here I get to roam free in a fantasy world filled with quests and dragons and elves and orcs. I just escape and forget. Only thing getting me through by abstinence from beer at the moment.

So, anyway, its a thread, not sure it will be so popular, but if you game, or you are thinking about it and want to know something about any genre, then the NMA forum gaming clinic is now officially open for business.

i should add that skateboard games are cool too most especially since they have sounds tracks that include the dead kennedys which is kinda cool.

I love FIFA, it's the only game I play as time is limited and that particular addiction takes up too much brain space to cope with another game! Been playing it for years now. PS3 is what console I've got. Used to love the Tony Hawk games but FIFA's a bit more in depth and challenging.

Still skate in 'real life' though!

good for you tony on still skating.

i play pro evolution but this year our son got me the FIFA world cup version and I was impressed how far it had come in terms of game play. I can't get the hang of the all the fancy moves though so I play with less skill which in some ways makes it a more realistic experience. I play it on Xbox 360.

do you play the games through like a season or a particular team that you like?

Haven't played them for a couple of years now, they just don't seem to work as well on laptops, but all time favourites -

Unreal Tournament
Return to Castle Wolfenstien

then,, Serious Sam,, Will Rock.

if you know any of them, then you know I favour the shoot em ups.

rtcw is one of the bestest games ever. gameplay, atmosphere and killing nazis. got later versions and they lost the plot a little. i still play rtcw regularly and now with better graphics I can run it in all its glory.

the unreal engine was/is used by a lot of games developers. it was revolutionary when it came out. i played some tournament stuff like that counter strike but online competitive knarks me a little since others don't stay as true to the ideals as i do. better off on my own raging against the machine!

With you there on both points. RTCW was a good adventure / strategy / shooter, slaughtering Nazi and Zombies by the dozen.

When I first saw the UT engine details, speed, and quality, yes blew me away. Amazing to think now  its 14 years old, and there has not really been a massive leap forward from it.

have you tired any of the fantasy rpg's? like baldur's gate or Neverwinter Nights? I'm hooked on Elder Scrolls.

also, there was a hybrid one called Fallout 3 that used the same engine but instead of swords it was post apocalypse weapons

Computer games are too complicated nowadays... I don't have the finger-dexterity to play them.

If it goes beyond UP - DOWN- LEFT- RIGHT - FIRE, I can't handle it.

The only game I've gotten into in the last few years in ANGRY BIRDS... it takes about 30 seconds to figure out how to play it...  ;D

I also found a playable version of JETPAC from the old ZX Spectrum days... that was fun...

Galaxia  ( wait for the M/Ray spelling bot to correct that) was my favourite from the Spectrum days. Like a more developed version of Space Invaders
