Can't believe I didn't post this one, the main theme to 'Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence' by Ryuichi Sakamoto, one of the most beautiful tunes ever... good movie too...

I love listening to instrumental music from time to time and some tunes which stand out for me are

Nine Inch Nails - Leaving Hope (Still)
M83 - Lower Your Eyelids To Die With The Sun (Before The Dawn Heals Us)
Ólafur Arnalds - 3055 (Eulogy For Evolution)

Just getting into an Icelandic band called Sigur Ros...

I discovered Sigur Rós a few years ago and I instantly fell in love with them. If you like their music try to see them live. Had the luck to be able to see them twice and each time it was a mind blowing experience.

Cheers, Guido, like I said I'm just getting into them, any advice as to favourite albums?  There's about six or so..?

Good call on M83.  Only got two of their albums, 'Before The Dawn Heals Us' and 'Saturday = Youth', really like them both.  Can't believe I didn't bother to see them at a small club a few years back when I had the chance.   :-[

The album that did the trick for me was "()", still my favorite one. Popplagið (or "Untitled 8") is part of that album - a killer track and the regular closer of a Sigur Rós concert (you get an idea why if you watch the following clip):

The most accessible album (in my opinion) is Takk, which also features the well known Hoppípolla (you mentioned the instrumental version in one of your previous posts). Some really great tunes on that album, too.

I also recommend to give their DVD "Heima" a try. Great (stripped down) versions of some of their best songs played live in sometimes strange but beautiful locations all over their home country Iceland.

I saw them live in Cologne in 2012. Superb gig. Back then I uploaded some clips I recorded to YouTube:

Try also their (or better: his) latest album "Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming". Great stuff.

G, thanks a million, plenty of stuff to be getting on with there!  For some reason my local library has a couple of SR albums available to borrow... well, I know what I'm doing tomorrow!  I'll get back to you as to what I think of them.   ;)

Just been listening to some of the Sigur Ros stuff you guys posted. Very impressed. Beautiful songs. We never get to hear music from Europe with popular radio clogged with american or british bands. Whole world full of music out there.
Hala (from the Anglo-Saxon word "halh", meaning nook or remote valley), until it was gifted by King Henry II to Welsh Prince David Owen and became known as Halas Owen

For some reason i have a hard time getting into instrumental tracks. It really depends on the instruments and if it can hold my attention.

However Tamacun by Rodrigo Y Gabriela.
It's just ******* amazing. It's just two guitars that sound like so much more!

Don't be mistaken - I've never heard a Sigur Rós song on popular german radio. It's filled with lots of rubbish from what is called "the charts" (bah).

Anything by Karma To Burn  ;) Pretty much everything they have ever done is instrumental and most song titles are just numbers e.g. 20, 34 etc

They are just finishing a few dates in the UK and are off to Ireland at the end of this month.

Great band if you like it a little bit heavier
