Recommendation on where to stay in London
« on: September 05, 2014, 07:46:29 AM »
Hello everybody,

I'm currently thinking about going to London to attend a certain movie screening. My (possible) flight would arrive in Stansted on Saturday, October, 4th and the departure would be on Monday, October, 6th. Has anyone a recommendation for a place to stay for that two nights in between? I know that London is among the most expensive cities on the planet but maybe someone has a tip for a nice and not too expensive place.

Thanks a lot & cheers
Guido

I live in camden so I am generally biased to suggest there, the corner house hotel camden rd is good and central is £90 a night and has a metal pub next door! If you have a bit more money the holiday inn camden lock is £200 a night but you are in right on the canal in the heart of camden market with all the bars and rock stalls, the newmarket ale house is a b+b in the high st opposite koko which is apparently good as well. If you wanna get to them from stansted for cheap get the national express bus to stratford then get the overground train to camden rd station, all are a five min walk max from there, I guess this info could apply to the forum gig as well.

Thanks a lot! I'll check those although the Holiday Inn seems to be way outside my budget.

alternatively, have a look at the Travelodge website - they have lots of hotel all over London, many quite central and if you book well in advance (which in your case might be too late for unfortunately) they can be very cheap (£30/40 per night); in any case with a bit of luck you should be able to get a room for £70/80.

I'd recommend the Premier Inn chain of hotels... not too expensive and bloody comfy.  I've stayed in London many times and believe me, you can pay a lot more for a lot less...

Don't be afraid to stay outside of the main centre.  I usually stay in Earls Court, a couple of miles away from the city centre, and it's just 20 minutes on the Tube away from the heart of things...

Hostels because hotels are far over-priced there. Unless you have a good paying job it's the only choice. I avoid that city because it's too big and you pay a fortune for a horrible hotel room. Some hostels are very nice. I believe i once stayed at "swinton Hotel"  and it was over priced and the area felt unsafe late at night. I hope this does not offend anyone but i don't see the big deal about London.  As far as U.K. cities go, i don't think it's the best.

There are some cheaper privately owned hotel rooms near kings cross. Premiere inn (that people say is so cheap) is actually very expensive especially in London.
Where I'm from is not my home, and neither's where i'm bound.

Thanks to all who answered but unfortunately I'll have to cancel my initial plan that involved attending the screening of the NMA documentary in London next month. There are several reasons but one is without doubt the insane prices for accommodation :'(

Wishing those who are going to watch the doc a good time!

Sorry to hear it, G.  Hope you make it to an NMA gig before too long.

Have to say, A, I've had some very cheap deals at Premier Inn during my many visits to London, but I suppose it depends on the budget and availability... I've had three nights for well under £200 in the past, which is very good for London.  If you make it to these shores again, let me know, I'll see what I can find... as I said, it helps if you stay out of the centre of things (but still a quick Tube journey away from everything...)

Just landed two very cheap rooms courtesy of travelodge and not a million miles away
