. I've even made some Beatle songs better.

I think we've all totally misunderstood you Space. I read this out to everyone in the office today and the whole place fell about laughing, it was one of those real coming together moments - I think you're actually a stand up comedian. Either way honey, a big thank you because it inspired one particularly selfish individual to put the kettle on and make us all a cup of tea  :)  :-*

The threads by Space have kept me going for a few days while I've been ill.

Wonder what the next one will be about?
Is is a crime to believe in something different?

I meant what I said at the time that I said it

Folks, because I voice my opinion, because I say my work may be better than NMA's, because I offer a different viewpoint than all the folks here, I should just go away?!? Wow.

1. Why is it that you all believe EVERYTHING NMA does is brilliant and can not be improved upon? I'd love the answer to that. So I added guitar to a song that was simply drums and vocals. Yes, it was improved upon. Listen to "Chinese Whispers." That song is very similar to "Inheritance" in structure (drums way up in mix, vocals, scant bass guitar...), but they did add some rocking guitar to it. I think "Chinese Whispers" is made better because of that guitar. I took "Inheritance" and added guitar. I think I made it a better song. For that I should leave the forum?

2. And, yes, I did make Beatles songs better. Ever hear "Revoltion 9"? Eight minutes of self-indulgent garbage. Well, I actually have the tape loops (the "number 9, number 9," orchestra, backwards strings, piano...) and I mixed and made a minute and a half version that is far better than The Beatles released version.

3, Finally, there is this quote from above:

"I cant say any artists can make a song better than what it was intended to be."

Hmmm, you clearly have never heard Aretha Franklin's "Respect." That song is a cover version, you know. The original was done and sung by a man. Aretha took that song and made it one of the great social anthems in the history of music.

Folks, the original does not always mean best. Other artists can take a work and improve upon it. I did it with "Inheritance" and "Revolution 9," countless others have done the same. Uhh, New Model Army have this song called "51st State." Ever hear the original version of "51st State"? Now tell me again that "any artist can't make a song better than what it was intended to be."

Space. The point I was trying to make is that better is purely interpretation. I was actually trying to stay neutral having read all the squabbles on here.

You liked your version. Great. No I havent heard the original version of Respect. And what if I liked the original better than Aretha Franklin. I can say its better than hers. It doesnt mean Im right and youre wrong or vice versa.
However it would be disrespctful of me to say for example, Ive just done a cover of it and its better than both. Or I just wrote a song and its better than any other song, is arrogant and an opinion. Opinions are to be disagreed with.
If you are an established musician, then it may hold more weight. However, given I genuinely love NMA, then for me and I guess most others on here, to say you took something and made it better is either over confidence or arrogance. Because you arent in the band we love. You cant have the same reception as the band we love because you havent been in it or shared in its success or creative input. I might have liked your version. But it will never be better in my view.

space, I couldn't agree with you more. Plenty of songs have been far better in subsequent versions than they were originally (totally agree with you about Revolution 9, BTW, that was just so much pretentious shit...).  But you can't just take it on faith!  I could say I just rewrote 'Mother' or 'Instant Karma' and put MUCH better stuff over it.  I wouldn't expect anyone to believe it.  Likewise, NMA...

Did you see that version of 'Inheritance' that I posted? You never responded... I think that it was a much better version of that track than the original... would have been interested to see how that measured up to 'your' version...

Sir, you post passionate and interesting posts (and you obviously love NMA) but it's all a bit lacking in anything solid to back it up...

Similarily though MR, some cover versions are attrocious. Again its all personal opinion. There are lots of factors that affect the popularity of a cover version. However an original song is just that. Original. It can be interpreted differently, more popular, but its arguable whether something is better than it was first. Point in question, Biffy Clyro's Many of Horror. Fantastic song. The other half likes Matt Cardle or however its spelt, better. We both are equally passionate in defence. Im right. And so is she.

Yes while i agree lots of bands have done covers and improved on the original but that's just my opinion on certain songs I'm a big cramps and meteors fan and both of them done a few covers that i loved. The uk subs - she's not there should prove my point.
Ok for me and most of us on the forum nma shouldn't be messed with but hey they were brave enough to include the remix of over the wire on lost songs and yes strangely i do like it. Would say the only cover of nma i thought was decent was the hunt.
Sometimes when you first hear a cover you've never heard the original and it leads you to check other band.
On drummyb's point i like gun - word up then again Mel b done it as well

Hey, best version of 'Word Up' I ever heard was Henry Rollins doing it as an encore in Leicester about 20 years ago with The Rollins Band...damn, can't find it on the Internet,...

Hey Space, with your guitar playing skills, self confidence, ability to improve well loved songs, and advice on production, I'm surprised you haven't written to Justin and asked for an audition. I'm sure you'd be warmly welcomed over, and given a chance to do your stuff, and show them where they went wrong with certain songs, and all those insignificant albums they did in the 2000s. I'm sure they'd be so grateful and impressed by your wisdom, they'd recruit you on the spot. Just think, your very first NMA gig could be one with you on the stage. We'd love to see you in action. That way you wouldn't even have to think about googling how to upload a music file onto the Internet or anything as difficult as that. What do ya say ?

Tony S, there's a new thread on these boards about how New Model Army never made it big. Well, with my "guitar playing skills, self confidence, ability to improve well loved songs, and advice on production," don't you agree that I should be auditioning for a band bigger than New Model Army?

Oh, but our opinions do matter to him Red. They confirm to him that his opinions are the correct ones remember :)

Space - My apologies. I assumed that your artistic integrity would mean you'd like to be part of a band you profess to be passionate about !

Artistic integrity goes right out the window the second you recieve an overdue bill in the mail.

In two weeks time Katy Perry will be making a fortune playing before close to 200 million people at the Super Bowl halftime show. If Katy held open auditions for a guitar player for that gig, I'd have been there in a nano-second.  And I have news for you, sitting right beside me waiting to audition next for Katy would be Justin Sullivan with his guitar.

Sure, writing tunes about the summer moors and Snelsmore Wood that no one will hear is a nice thing, but feeding your family and driving around in an Aston Martin is nicer. Don't kid yourself, Justin Sullivan and I would have both been there with our Gibson SGs if Katy Perry held auditions for her Super Bowl gig.

Get a ******* grip.

Why would anyone want to write a song that no one would hear, unless it's a improved version of Inheritance :) :)

I think you have a problem with reality.

I know Justin and he wouldn't be there, why would he want to be near a two bob busker and as for Katy Perry I know he wouldn't care about her either.

You carry on kidding yourself and believe what you will but seriously it's about time you did us all a favour and left.

Cheers
