Has anyone ever been to Albania?
« on: February 28, 2015, 11:08:33 AM »
I have learned that I can legally stay in Albania Visa free for an entire year.I am thinking of getting a volunteer gig at an eco-hostel there and using it as a base.

From the tourist websites it looks beautiful and friendly. I am aware that it does not have the best economy in Europe and that poverty is higher than that of western Europe.  This does not matter to me as often it means the people are more humble and appreciative.

Culture-wise is it most similar to Greece, Italy, Turkey, Croatia and other Balkan Countries?
What about the food?
Did it feel safe?

Of course i can look this up myself but would much rather hear from people who have actually visited.  :)
Where I'm from is not my home, and neither's where i'm bound.

I haven't visited there. Might be interesting to know a bit more about their present day of life there.

What I know, or remember from schools is that Albania was a 'closed' country in history for a long time. I'd thought it had something to do with the presence of the Warsaw Pact, (or actually the CCCP) when it was in power. But things have changed from that a long time ago in central-eastern Europe. In a start of 90's there was also the Yugoslavia war nearby.
