Flying Through The Smoke
« on: May 02, 2015, 06:23:20 PM »
Just wondered if anyone knew if this song related to a specific incident  - in the same way that Breathing (If I remember right)  relates to the 7/7 bombings -  or if it is more a "generic" story?

Cheers

To me it sounded more emotional and personal. I always thought it was a metaphor.

I think JS referenced the Bali bombings in respect of this.
Certainly of not wouldn't be a bad guess. I remember the footage they showed of the bomber skulking in the club before he left them to their fate !

I remember JS introducing it at a gig and saying that it was about the same thing as 225. I never quite understood that.

I always thought it is about frustration and vengeance. Of a dashed and deeply disappointed individual, who finally gets back at the ones who hurt him/her in the first place. Someone who hasnĀ“t found a place in life and decides to go out with a big bang.

Certainly suicide bombers and trying to understand the mindset of such an individual seem right.

And the Bali Bombings seem as likely an atrocity as any other to inspire the song.

Me neither really. Unless it meant it's also about things being done in "our" name that nobody ever asked for.

Who knows? I suppose it's one of them "take what you want from it" sort of songs !

Really?!?!  I would not have guessed that!

Fascinating.

maybe from the empathy standpoint.  Although, so much of NMA is empathy.

I think it was on the Eight tour. I remember being quite puzzled by it. I still am to be honest. I was thinking along the lines of Anna and things being done in your name or for your supposed benefit.

What happened to the explanations behind songs that appeared on the inside cover when you opened (for example) b sides and abandoned tracks.

Was always intrigued as to what the band were feeling when Rob Heaton threw his sticks on the floor at the end of RIP. From what i can remember it was something about the band being annoyed at missing an opportunity????

Might be wrong.....

Some great songs on that album by the way.

Um, I think those 'explanations' only ever occurred of the likes of 'Lost Songs' and 'B-Sides', not any official album?

Always loved to hear those words, though..?
