Pink Floyd

Some Pink Ployd fans around here?
I own a few ones of their records..."Wish you were here","Dark side of the moon" and the "best of" "Echoes".
First time i saw "The Wall" (Alan Parker's movie) back in the mid 90's i was deeply impressed...the visuals, the music, the lyrics...bleak sad and moving.
I remember one french critic writing that "Green and Grey"'s long moody intro had a Floyd influence...i also remember some critics about "Between dog and wolf" (the album) saying that there was another Floyd influence in the sound, mood...interesting.
What do you think of this band? Some albums to recommend?

I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan. Animals is my favorite album of theirs, closely followed by Meddle and Wish You Were Here. This is a minority opinion among my fellow Floyd fans but I prefer the Syd Barrett solo albums to Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Piper now sounds a little dated but Syd's albums are timeless.

I think you would also like the fairly recent Dave Gilmour album On A Beach. It sounds just like classic Floyd. It also shoots down the annoying assertion of Roger Waters that HE was the band and the others were just sidemen. On A Beach proves they'd have been nothing without Dave Gilmour. And the Echoes comp. really is surprisingly excellent.

Sorry, I am awful with album titles as well as songs. The Gilmour album is called On An Island. Islands have beaches so at least I was close.

Aw, Pink Floyd... I should like them a lot, seeing as I'm a bit of a prog-head... and I like quite a few tunes by them... but they just don't excite me enough to truly immerse myself in their music.  I appreciate their musicianship and all but they just leave me a bit... 'meh'....

Sorry.   :-[

Their masterpiece is Dark Side, a desert island disc for me. But I've played it to death & back, Meddle & Wish Wish You Were Here would be next up. I find The Wall a tough listen, its very drab & depressing.

Big Floyd Fan here. I have seen them 3 times in their Heyday. Twice with Roger and one without still some of the most amazing shows I have seen. And this is going back 40 yrs. Anyway as for my favorite album well Darkside and the Wall may have more sales but Animals to me is their best and I saw that live on Tour in 1977. But I will say that Obscoured By Clouds is where you can hear the 1st glimmers of what would be their sound in Future albums The song Childhoods End could easily be on Darkside of the Moon. 8)

I'm totally jealous. Would have loved to have seen them in their heyday. Wish You Were Here has always been my favourite closely followed by Animals. I love The Wall but it's really a Roger Waters solo album. I also really like The Endless River which many fans didn't like. I actually like it much better than The Division Bell. Haven't heard Dave Gilmours latest yet.

True, the Wall is a Roger Waters solo project in a lot of respects. But he at least had the wisdom to let Gilmour, who has a far better voice, sing on key songs like Hey You and Comfortably Numb. Waters lost all sense of proportion on The Final Cut. If an entire album of Roger Waters ranting sounds like something you might enjoy, absolutely pick it up. To a lot of others it was the sound of the end. David Gilmour came out very soon after the release to say he thought it blew (or words to that effect). I agree, for the most part.
If you want a good sample of what early Floyd sounded like, without wading through a lot of self-indulgent albums, Relics is a good one.

"Comfortably numb" is a great song, moving, i have chills each time i listen to it...and this Davild Gilmour solo at the end, wow, it shows you how great he is...sensitive, moving.

I also really like The Endless River which many fans didn't like. I actually like it much better than The Division Bell.

On "The Division Bell" i like "High hopes" though, again catchy chorus and great Gilmour sound:

stop being so Waters and Gilmour and give some love to Richard Wright..he was the backbone of that beautifully unique Pink Floyd sound..and no..no recommendations, music is a voyage of discovery, never be afraid to step out of your comfort zone ,you won't like something or hate something because we tell you it's good or bad, you'll 'get it' when you are ready..i'm quite lucky in that respect i find humans infinitely fascinating and the level of expression that their depth of character can produce, good and bad can be sublime, intense and deeply disturbing, i love music..all music, and especially if i can watch the artist perform...

but since you ask..this has been a treat for me since childhood..:)

For me it's Meddle...  The guitar work is some of Gilmour's best, in my eyes.

And our dogs go mad when we play it because of "Seamus"!

Only The Wall. I am not a big fan of long guitar solos.

without a doubt. comfortably numb is the stand out song from "the wall" I believe it holds some sort of record on desert island discs? ...happy to be proved wrong though. even mr Clarkson wanted to be stranded with it!.. me, I prefer money and wish you were here.

see what I did there

I may not have expressed my love for Richard Wright but I have it to spare. He sang a lot of their best early songs and he also sang my favorite Floyd song of all - 'Us And Them'
