How are Manchester gigs ??
« on: May 10, 2016, 07:23:04 PM »
Hi all,

I've been a few times to London & Nottingham NMA gigs, and this year I am thinking of doing Manchester.

how is it ?
London & Nott are fantastic for the great moshpit, is it the same in Manchester ? or is it quiet ?? great ambiance ?

what about the venue ? packed like Nottingham ?
is there a balcony or some steps if we don't want to be in the pit ?

thanks !

Hey, Patrice.  Did I meet you at the aftershow in Nottingham last year?  I might have been a bit drunk, so forgive me if I don't remember....  ::)

The NMA gig in Manchester is at The Ritz, I've been there many times.  It's a great venue.  Just the right size for NMA.  Yes, there is a balcony with a good view if you don't like feel like getting into the moshpit.  The balcony also have comfortable sofas and an upstairs bar that is a lot less busy than the downstairs one.

I suspect it will be packed, seeing as it's a Friday.  As for what the moshpit will be like... who knows? But if I know Manchester crowds, it will be somewhat hectic...

Feel free to get back to me if you need any tips about coming to Manchester, I might not live there but it's like a second home to me, been there hundreds of times, I will be going to this gig and I know hotels, restaurants, great places to drink etc... hope to see you there!

Witch, it might be an idea to post a separate thread?  So people interested in attending the Leeds gig might pick up on that straight away?

Witch, you're not 'out of order', it was just a gentle suggestion so that you might get more direct responses!

I'm planning to go to Leeds too, witch.  I haven't been to Leeds Uni for donkeys years so don't know what the venue is like.  Student union venues are usually ok though?  I've been to Leeds Beckett student union a few times and that's an ok place.  We'll find out, won't we?

I've seen the band at most Manc gigs since the late 80s and they're generally very good. The main exception (to me anyway) is when they play the main Academy venue - which I think is a soul-less barn. The Academy2 - or MDH in old money - is smaller & makes for far better gigs. The Xmas gig is at the Ritz which is a good venue - with a balcony. I'd be surprised if it was as packed as Rock City.

I've likewise been to most Leeds gigs since the late 80s and its almost a home town gig. I've never been to the stylus venue at the Uni where they are playing at Xmas - it was mainly the old main refectory, T&C/02 or Poly/Leeds Met/Whatever -its-now-called that i've seen them - so I cannot comment on that as a venue

Totally agree, JM, I've seen many gigs at the Academy venues in Manchester, MA2 is far better than MA1, Club Academy is also very good, really small but well worth it if a band you like play there.  Plus, since Jabez Cleggs closed down, The Ritz has a far better array of great pubs nearby... Grand Central, The Salisbury, The Peveril, The Lass, Thirsty Scholar...

Indeed.. a final bit of advice (from experience..) - if you're thinking of a slap up feed on the curry mile before the Manc gig - go afterwards, not before ;)

Personally, I never have a big feed before a gig... it stops the beer getting into your bloodstream!

BTW, for anyone who is unfamiliar with Manchester... The Curry Mile is a great place to go to after a gig, but it's a bit of a trek from The Ritz... there are equally great places nearby. Recommendations can follow, if necessary.

Patrice, any update on whether you're coming to Manchester?

Patrice, I think if you like the Nottingham Rock City gig you will be equally pleased with the Manchester Ritz gig. Manchester is a nice City. There are some good pubs to meet up in before the gig. I would suspect that as it is on his patch, LCG may well be planning an after show party
