Sounds of Sheffield
« on: January 03, 2020, 09:38:24 PM »
So, Cherry Red has curated a 4 CD set called Sounds of Sheffield, with a track by the obscure band New Model Soldier, but nothing from NMA. I always have associated NMA with Sheffield, since Bradford is just 50 km away. Am I wrong to think that?

I wouldn't associate NMA with Sheffield any more than any other northern city. I used to live in Leeds and wouldn't even associate them with that place. NMA will always be a Bradford band to me.

I also see utterly no reason why NMA should be associated with Sheffield.  But, hey, not sure where you're posting from, PLR, I do appreciate that larger countries than the UK can regard 50 Km as a brief distance, in fact a remember a famous quote as being something like 'US people regard 200 years as a long time, UK people regard 200 miles as a long way...'  ;)

Still, Liverpool and Manchester are about 35 miles apart and nobody would describe The Beatles as being 'associated with Manchester'...   :D

All the best to you and, If I haven't said it before, welcome to The Forum!

Just imagine witnessing NMA in Bradford in the early days. I wonder who was there? Are there any forum goers that went to the Marquee? Stoney might have been there I imagine. Who else though? I've got that live gig on video tape.

Was that the gig around '91-ish? Wasn't it a "secret" warm up gig of some kind? If so, I was there! I remember Marrakesh being played with Nelson and Justin on acoustics, and Justin asking the crowd what the first single they ever bought was. Not sure why those two things in particular stick in my mind. Also saw them in Bradford around '94....not sure that counts as early days though!

apparently early 90's guitarist Adrian Portas was from Sheffield.
(Raw Melody Men, Love of Hopeless Causes).
Also for LoHC some additional recording was at Axis Studio which is based in Sheffield.
Ghost of Your Father, Modern Times have Pete Stewart engineering so maybe they were partly recorded there too.

i've only noted this cos i'm from Sheffield.
