Title: New Jstin Sullivan solo album announced on Facebook 19/12/20
Post by: huwcamden on January 09, 2021, 05:32:52 PM
I have never been much into Facebook but recently joined only to see that a Justin Sullivan solo album is expected in early 2021, apparently it's called "surrounded". This is obviously great news if correct but its weird there is no mention on the official NMA board, it seems it's been abandoned to the tumble weed and the cool evening desert sciroccos by all and sundry...

There has been some discussion of this on other threads on the Board (NBTS anniversary thread, for one), but no official announcement in a stand alone thread,  as you note.

Either way, I am totally thrilled!  I love NBTS, and I have high hopes for Surrounded.

Facebook is the number 1 communication system for everybody now, bands, people, brands ... so we should be happy that NMA is still bringing news here, most bands don’t even bother to update or even make a website.

Every now and then I get a link from a friend for a FB post were I’m mentioned, or in an old photo that get posted. Most of the time, after a day or so, an asshole will come make a comment about me from a story or another that is 25-30 years old ... (I used to organise gigs and parties so lots of people now me in the small Parisian Goth / Punk underground). I’m always amazed that those people just live in the past, as if their life stopped after a few years in the « underground » and how they keep talking about insignificant old events, as if there was nothing new and exiting in their life for more than 20 years... That’s Facebook to me, people trying to think they have a interesting life because they HAD a good time for a year or too in their 20s ...

I hate so much FB

Tried FB a few times, each time I wind up deleting my account and still am not on it.
Not particularly interested in catching with the lot I knew in my teens and 20s
Their lives and mine have separated so long ago
Don't want to relive those memories, today and tomorrow is more where I'd rather be

Same here, buddy!  Yes, I occasionally think about old friends from the past and wonder 'what are they up to...' and they I remember the few attempts I made to reconnect with folks like that after so many years, instances that ended up in awkward drinks or dinner with little to say after the first 20 minutes because years of no contact have turned us into very different people... I wish those folks well and look back fondly on happy memories but, nope, I'll stick with the present, thanks...

I am active on FB but I've got about 20 friends on there and not interested in getting any more, they're all people I have a strong link with (for one reason or another) and would meet up with on a regular basis if we weren't separated by geography.

Still, it would be nice if new info about NMA related stuff was announced HERE other than on FB...  :)

Really interesting interview:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8SM5jvc0N4
And some snippets about the new Justin's album. "It's quite like "NBTS" but it's a little bit more eclectic. There's no drums, the bass is the up right bass," "One of the songs is about St Paulo."

I think he said that like NBTS there's no drums and an upright bass, not opposed to NBTS (in case above was not clear :))

Fantastic interview, love it, Justin talking very freely, none of the often repetitive, contrived, promo stuff you get on tours and releases. Really interesting detsilon production and recording techniques as well, I never knew he wasn't keen on the Ghost of cain sound, I totally agree, that oldschool 60"s style poppy mix doesn't do it justice, it needs Bob clear mountain..and some of the tales of recording sessions are fascinating, a proper seasoned raconteur he is.

Oh man that is the best news!
I have preordered the digital version, I'll sort the physical copy to the USA when they start to post links to local sources.

Totally thrilled that there are a couple of extra tracks added to NBTS.  I have Sooner or Later (great song) but to have it and the Wreck of the Essex included is a huge bonus.  I knew of its existence, and I had fingers crossed it would make a showing here.

SO EXCITED!

Also, that cover art is gorgeous.  I'd love a print of that, but I'm not in for the bundles that contain it.

Anyone out there listening, I'd be very interested in seeing album art prints available again, including an updated selection!

"Please note that, with the ever-increasing shipping costs and now the added complications of Brexit, it may be cheaper for people outside the UK to order from outlets in their own countries. We will be adding links for these soon."

hi there. the link provided in the home page to get the new album is not the best one as far as price. I just ordered it for example from WOM (world of music which ships usually free of charge in Germany) and or Media Markt same price vinyl 27 euro. or almost. this at least for Germany. best to all. simon

Here is an aspect of this impending album that delights me: date of release is late spring/early summer!

look at the release dates going back to Carnival (recognizing that these are NMA albums)

Carnival 06/09/2005
High 20/08/2007
Today is a Good Day Sept 2009
Between Dog and Wolf 30/09/2013
Between Wine and Blood 05/09/2014
Winter 26/08/2016
From Here 23/08/2019

All late summer/early autumn!

Nothing wrong with that time of year, but I am really looking forward to enjoying this one all summer.

Also, what an unbelievable run of music that is represented above.  Wow

Hi ya, Valstar Superstar. :)

Not too sure where to get any of the bundle(s) outside the UK; however, I had some extra time today and did a bit of searching around, online.  It may or may not be of help, I don't know.

I'm going to assume it's the double LP vinyl version of BOTH  JS  albums, "Navigating By The Stars" & "Surrounded"  bundle (https://justinsullivan.tmstor.es/product/77542?cur=EUR), that you're looking to source / purchase.  Would that be correct? ???

I'm in Canada and am going to be ordering my copies from the UK, as I've always done in the past with the bulk of my NMA/JS/RSC collection.  I just have to wait 'til sometime in April though, as I don't have the funds at the moment.

I thought for sure that amazon.fr (https://www.amazon.fr/s?k=Justin+sullivan&i=popular&__mk_fr_FR=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&ref=nb_sb_noss) would be carrying the vinyl copies of the of both JS albums, but to my heartbreaking shock and disappointment - and for some unbeknownst to me reason - they aren't at this very minute.  Folk can check out that link you all just passed for proof.

(France)  I genuinely don't understand what's up with the vinyl versions not being available via amazon.fr (https://www.amazon.fr/s?k=Justin+sullivan&i=popular&__mk_fr_FR=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&ref=nb_sb_noss), as NMA have an extremely decent and considerable following in France.  I genuinely hope that someone from  Mr. Sullivan's  management team, or even the label / company distributing both  "Navigating By The Stars"  and  "Surrounded", will look into ironing out those kind of few yet significant pleats, creases. ???

I'm going to go off on a seriously heartfelt tangent and rant, vent for a bit here, now...

Mr. Sullivan's  life's work(s), creative / music related endeavours  (very same goes for everyone who has ever been a part of AND everything  New Model Army  and  Red Sky Coven  related)  absolutely deserves to reach as many people / souls as possible.  Mr. Sullivan/NMA/RSC and his / their work(s) deserve SO much better, SO much more -  more than they've ever been given over the years and certainly, more than they've ever even asked for - especially, in terms of / with regards to...

Please forgive me, as hard as I might try, the art of articulating is not my forte.  Basically, what I'm trying to say is that Mr. Sullivan/New Model Army/Red Sky Coven  deserve far more positive breaks and creative opportunities than he/they've ever even asked for or that they have ever been granted... y'know?  There are so many people floating here and surfing on other social platforms elsewhere, who so strongly, so intensely, feel the very same way about  JS's/NMA's/RSC's collective work(s), efforts.  So many of us would really, really love to see ALL of those good and wonderful things finally happen for them :-\ though not in an out-of-control, superstardom or toxic, stifling, 'fame' kind of way.

Ohhh,  'GOD'... why on earth are some of those outside the  NMA/JS/RSC  bubble so blind?  Why?  Why?  Why?  Ugh.  Ugh!  Ugh!! :-[:'(

I am SO grateful, profoundly moved and incredibly thankful that I was introduced to  New Model Army  via their incredible song  "White Coats".  It was  savoured  in all it's truth and beauty as a decade's end countdown entry.  It played on the TRUE original  "Spirit of Radio"  station here, all those many, many, many moons ago.  If I hadn't been tuned in  / listening to the radio that day, I'm not sure how much longer it would've taken me to come 'round to NMA/JS.  By that time, I had already missed out on so much of  NMA/JS's work.

I would've definitely, eventually, truly missed out on THE very best, most beautiful, profoundly meaningful (to me) moments in and of my entire life.  For from that instant, tiny, yet intense spark, grew a love so cherished, so deep for all things NMA/JS.  That tremendous, thundering & consoling love, respect, admiration for NMA/JS and their talent, gift(s) would prove to last me decades, all the while continuing to strengthen, grow, flourish.

All those treasured tiny moments that blossomed and grew over the years, were among the very extreme few, truly positive, soul-shifting, up-lifting, elated joys that I'd ever, ever felt, ever experienced, ever been gifted by anyone - in all of my life.  I love them, so very, very much, as do so many, many, many of us floating here.  NMA/JS deserve so much better.  They  ohhh...,  so do!!!  This needed to be reiterated, expressed, shared, said.  Just, how I feel.
:-[:'(

To head back on track regarding Valstar Superstar's original bundle(s) inquiry, question...

(Germany)  At his very second, amazon.de (https://www.amazon.de/s?k=justin+sullivan&i=popular&__mk_de_DE=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&ref=nb_sb_noss_1) appears to have the vinyl version of "Navigating By The Stars" available, yet not "Surrounded" on vinyl... which again, is a shock, but this time by half.  Why one and not both  JS  solo albums?  What am I not getting = missing, here?  Doesn't seem to make any sense to me.  Is it still too early, or something like that?  Anyone in the know, jump in here and shed some light on this finding, observation, situation. ???

(Italy)  Not exactly sure what's happening here, though it's incredibly fantastic that amzon.it (https://www.amazon.it/s?k=justin+sullivan&i=popular&__mk_it_IT=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&ref=nb_sb_noss) appears to be carrying  both  full-length JS recordings in vinyl format!! :D

(Canada)  Absolutely thrilled to discover amazon.ca (https://www.amazon.ca/s?k=justin+sullivan&i=popular&ref=nb_sb_noss_1) is also carrying both JS's first and second solo albums on vinyl, as well! :D

(United States)  Same goes for amazon.com (https://www.amazon.com/s?k=justin+sullivan&i=music-intl-ship&ref=nb_sb_noss_1), they're carrying both "Navigating By The Stars"  and  "Surrounded" vinyl formats, also! :D

Not sure if any of the above information is of help to you Valstar Superstar, but I thought I'd share what I managed to find online with you (and other interested folk), anyhow. :)

On a completely  New Model Army  note...

While looking for Mr. Sullivan's two solo albums at amazon.com (https://www.amazon.com/s?k=justin+sullivan&i=music-intl-ship&ref=nb_sb_noss_1), I stumbled across something from NMA that I've never seen or heard of before.  It's a curious NMA video entitled  "New Model Army - We Love The World" (https://www.amazon.com/New-Model-Army-Love-World/dp/B08W2NBJWW/ref=sr_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=justin+sullivan&qid=1616527726&s=music&sr=1-7-catcorr)  from 2013, which is weird because apparently, wonderfully melodic former NMA guitarist, Mr. Dave  Blomberg  is  supposedly in it.  Thing is, he left NMA back in 2005.  Which makes me wonder whether this NMA video is official, legitimate. ???

To me, it looks a bit iffy, dodgy.  It has, though, sparked considerable interest from me; however, if no cut of the profits go to the band / artists = NMA themselves, I'm going to pass on it.  Perhaps there's someone here, reading this, that can take a minute or two to let the rest of us know whether it is an official NMA release / product or not?  Please, if it's not too much to ask, tell us all you might know about the video in question, as the listed details are few and rather sketchy at that.

Have a good day and stay safe, all ye gentlefolk.  To whomever makes and takes the time to reply to any of the above question(s)... Thank you. :)

It's a re-release of this:  New Model Army - Live 16.12.03 (https://www.discogs.com/New-Model-Army-Live-161203/master/229598)

Thanks Bever! :)

Nothing to worry about then, as I bought a copy of the original, brilliant DVD, from the NMA shop years ago.  Unless, this re-release contains further bonus features other than that absolutely solid, stellar smokin' JS interview. 8)

Actually, I'll have to look into this video, especially if this re-released version contains extra tracks or has other bonus features, footage tacked onto it.  It's been quite a while since I watched the original DVD.  Wouldn't want to miss out on anything else, NMA related.  I missed out on far too much as it is, having been born far too late and on the wrong side of the pond 'n all.  Oh, well... at least I'm here now.  :)

Begs the obvious question though...

Why is this re-release not available in physical form from the official NMA online shop (https://shop.newmodelarmy.org/music/physical/dvd)  OR  officially up at Vimeo.com (https://vimeo.com/search/ondemand?q=new+model+army) as video on demand? ???

Maybe NMA's team or whomever owns the rights to it, can make it available on the above two sites, as well.  Would be a help revenue-wise, what with this crap covid-19 situation, disaster, no? ???

I don't know how any of this stuff works and what's really involved, :-\ I'm just guessing and coming at it from a genuine  'fans'  point of view / angle.  Though I certainly wouldn't mind seeing the DVD re-stocked in the official NMA shop again, as I only ever did buy the one copy.  I'd like a back-up, you know, just in case.  That'd be great.  Maybe in time, who knows.

Cheers! :)

So, gonna order the bundle in the UK !

Yeah, I totally get that Valstar Superstar and where your wife is coming.  Your wife's right though, just tell her to lay off of your eyes and ears 'cause you'll be needing them for her, the kids and NMA! :)

It's been roughly seven years or so, that I haven't ordered from any Amazon.  They claimed that they fulfilled and sent me my order, but that I hadn't paid them, which is total fcukin' bullshit.  Everybody, everywhere knows that that company makes sure to take one's money before dispatching anything to any of its customers.  That pissed me right off and put me off them, royally.  Their prices are too high, in the majority of cases, which I find completely unfair as well.  I mean, the guy's a billionaire and the company is monstrous.  One would think that he'd pass a sliver, just a sliver of that profit back to the folks who helped build him and his business / empire up, but no, not so.

That's just another sad example of the crap world we're living in, that most are subscribing to, propelling, perpetuating, facilitating, etc.  And we've always lived in this kind of world, the exact same way, with exact same outcomes, exact same shitty characters taking advantage and finding opportunity in such wrongful ways to get ahead, etc.  The faces and times may change, but the habits remain.  It's actually quite disheartening, gut-wrenchingly sad, because if people actually took the time, made the genuine effort, one by one, to even try to do right, just and good, all of us would be better of for it and ok.  And I'm not specifically meaning in a financially, I just mean in a very simple, basic, overall / general way.

I learned, so long ago, that the majority of people give in and give up far too easily.  And I've never understand why.  They've certainly shown that they possess the intelligence, tenacity, strength, potential, skills and ability to effect positive change in the smallest but most meaningful and truly lasting ways; to add to this, their garden / our collective garden = earth; but instead, and yet, far too many choose to disrespect and spoil it for themselves, their descendants and each other.  Man, I'm starting to sound like a preacher, but I'm nowhere near one.  Preaching isn't my cup of tea.  I'm one who'd rather teach and learn by example, rather than stick solely to (for lack of a better term) preaching.

It is my belief that every single one us, while we're here on this earth, in this garden, did one small act of goodness, benevolence, kindness on a daily basis, all of it would add up to something so great, something so much better than what we're currently dealing with, living in and around.  I'm sounding pretty off-putting, lame and cheesy, but however little, there is still significant truth in this belief, these thoughts.  It's just become a serious bummer that most everyone, everywhere sleeps.  Sometimes it just gets so overwhelming that even I do, too.  But I try and do my best to continue to try, even when all my love and effort results to absolutely nothing... yet somehow, somewhere, someday it could, it just might.  That slight possibility and hope of something good coming out of total crap, is at least a some kind of worthwhile start, venture, endeavour.  Otherwise, :-\ what's the fcukin' point of anything and everything, living?  One might as well just stay in bed.
:-[

So, gonna order the bundle in the UK!

Awesome, me too!!  Though I prefer buying the bulk of my stuff directly from the NMA shop or at their live gigs, I haven't run into any problems with Townsend... they've proven themselves to be alright, so far.  Enjoy your day, Valstar Superstar. :)

Yes I went through JPC.de to order to the USA.  Very reasonable price (I think) for the 2 cd set, and for shipping.
Title: Hopes for Justin Sullivan's second solo album, "Surrounded"...

Really hoping JS plays a lot of harmonica on his new album, "Surrounded".
Love it when Mr. Sullivan plays and cradles his harmonica, so gorgeous!
Can't wait to hear in which tracks the harmonica surfaces, appears.
How thrilling, exciting!  Ooh, not too long to go now.  YESss!! :D

Title: Second full-length solo offering from Justin Sullivan, "Surrounded" out May 28th
Post by: 8 on April 15, 2021, 05:56:10 PM
pulled from the official  newmodelarmy.org (http://newmodelarmy.org)  home page...

“Under the circumstances, it wasn’t particularly surprising that this was the moment to make another solo record and the songs came thick and fast in the first few weeks of the lockdown…

There is not so much about ‘what’s happening in the World’.  As with Navigating by the Stars, which was written in the aftermath of 9/11, I wanted to write about other things - some well-known stories, some less well-known, some autobiographical and more a landscape of the imagination than social comment.

I’m grateful for all the many musical contributions I received from friends that help to create all the different atmospheres and places; it’s a long album, but it seems that all the songs belonged together in one collection.

I hope people enjoy it.”

Here is an aspect of this impending album that delights me: date of release is late spring/early summer!

look at the release dates going back to Carnival (recognizing that these are NMA albums)

Carnival 06/09/2005
High 20/08/2007
Today is a Good Day Sept 2009
Between Dog and Wolf 30/09/2013
Between Wine and Blood 05/09/2014
Winter 26/08/2016
From Here 23/08/2019

All late summer/early autumn!

Nothing wrong with that time of year, but I am really looking forward to enjoying this one all summer.

Also, what an unbelievable run of music that is represented above.  Wow

Well, it has been great to have new stuff from NMA to warm us when the winds turn cold... And frankly, I can't recall what time of the year it was that I first heard ''Navigating by the Stars'' but in my mind I strongly connect it with early autumn when the nights are still rather warm but getting so dark... maybe it was just the time of the year when I listened to it a lot  :)
Title: "SURROUNDED" is here (if U wish 2 taste & savour a bit of it B4 yer LP/CDs come)
Post by: 8 on May 28, 2021, 11:08:11 AM
For the very first time in my life, I caved.  Normally, I'd sit back and patiently wait for my order to get here first, before even thinking about listening to more than the released singles.  However, I just loved the first three so much, that I couldn't hold off any longer.  It will still be as special when my order gets here though.  I'll have the lyrics to soak-up, take in.  soft lol, I'm going things a bit backwards, but it's been a very surreal and weird two years.  Nothing has been anywhere near normal.

I've listened to the three singles; "Amundsen",  "Clean Horizon"  and only just a few days ago (up 'til this morning), "Unforgiven" (at least 100 times each).  As for the rest of the album, I've only heard it once, so far.  But I can tell you, that I love what I'm hearing lyrically and vocally, especially!  It wasn't what I was expecting, but I'm pleased to say that I am more than pleasantly surprised.

For starters, it's much, much softer and sweeter sounding than monumental  "Navigating by the Stars".  There's no "Ocean Rising"  equivalent on this record, well, in terms of immediacy, intensity, urgency.  The new album  "Surrounded"  is much more laid back and definitely (for the most part) much more summery-sounding, with regards to both vocal and musical execution, aural textures, and lyrics.  For me, "Navigating by the Stars" has more of an autumn / winter-ish kind of feel, vibe.  I love both seasons, both albums.  They're SO different, but good.  I'm glad  "Surrounded"  has had a mid-spring release because we can further explore, savour and enjoy it throughout the coming summer.

My favourite things so far are Mr. Sullivan's sweeter, softer, hushed vocals.  I love that he can be in your face, yet at times in your arms too, in equal measure.  I hope JS continues testing, messing around and playing with the limits of his voice and its vocal spectrum, levels of gradation, intensity and softness of his voice vocal projection / colours, etc.  Sorry articulation is definitely not my forte, but I hope that makes some kind of sense.

I love that Mr. Sullivan's holding longer notes, vocally, on this record.  I love the romanticism seeping into and out of most of the songs.  It's at times lyrically, quite unexpectedly, yet refreshingly and seriously, exhilaratingly sensual.  I was not expecting that, at all.  But I have to admit, it's beyond wonderful to hear JS go down those kind of paths again.  It's been far too long, I miss those kinds of songs of his.

With that, I'd like to send out a HUGE thank you to whomever it is out there in the world that has either encouraged Mr. Sullivan to go down that route, to go there, or inspires him in those kinds of highly conducive and rich, sacred ways, resplendently wakes up and recharges that beautiful integral part of him.  To say I love those moments in the songs is a complete understatement!  Whatever Mr. Sullivan thinks he might've had as a young man, Mr. Sullivan never lost it along the way.  I just wish JS was more sure of himself, comfortable with himself, in his own skin, in that department.  And no, I do not know him personally.  I'm just callin' it, feelin' it as I'm seein' it, hearin' it.  I don't know, but to me, it's as clear and transparent as daylight.  JS is absolutely lovely, really, even still.  Stay beautiful, where and how it matters most Mr. Sullivan and everything else will fall naturally into place.  You'll see.

I'm planning to come back to this thread, at some point, hopefully soon-ish.  I just really want to listen to the songs / album as a whole, in its entirety, on a proper stereo system.  Familiarising myself with the correct lyrics first, before going into any other specifics, about songs and other related details that have taken me in, about Mr. Sullivan's follow-up solo effort, "Surrounded".

Hope nothing gets lost in the mail.  Last night, I signed up for  no contact delivery  from DHL (ordered my bundles from Townsend).  Who knows what's going to happen.  I'm actually a bit nervous.  Cost me roughly $90.00 CDN in duty fees.  It'd kill me if they arrive damaged or worse yet, not at all. :-[

I hope I didn't piss anyone here off :-\ by including youtube links to all the songs / official videos from / off  "Surrounded"  (on a previous post here in this very thread).  If I have, I genuinely didn't mean to upset anyone, as today is the actual release date for streaming services as well.  Hope you all enjoy both of the albums, 'it's been a long, a long time coming'.  xx

Calling for rain all day today, here.  Hope it's nicer, better weather wherever you all are, today.   Stay safe people. :)

Great review 8!!

The wait for another Justin Sullivan solo album after the masterpiece "Navigating by the stars" has been almost unbearable...almost 20 years to wait, can you imagine??

As much as i love NMA, i was more curious and impatient to know if Justin, sooner or later, would deliver another solo album...because i still think that "Navigating by the stars" is Justin"s Gem among the gems! This album, like "Thunder and consolation" before, has a special place in my heart.

and now that "Surrounded" is released and that i've listened to it "only" 5 tracks for the moment, all i can say is that it was worth the wait!

"Sea again" is my favourite song for the moment, for the gorgeous melodies and endlessly moving voice that never fails to move me!
