The New Model Army documentary is now in full production and over the next few months we will be interviewing a whole range of people with a story to tell about the band. As important as anyone are the fans themselves. We need to talk to as many of you as possible about what NMA means to you. Some questions to think about:
• where were you when you first heard the band? what was it about them that struck you?
• choose 3 songs, what do they mean to you? have they affected your life? what memories to they trigger when you hear them? how do you interpret the lyrics of these songs? or maybe the lyrics are irrelevant to you, it's just about the music?
• in your mind what makes NMA different from all the other bands?
You could have been following NMA for 30 years or just discovered them. You could be young or old, and it certainly doesn't matter where you are from or what langauge you speak (Charlotte speaks Polish and French). It would be helpful if you are on Skype but not essential, email is fine for starters. You just need to have something to say about New Model Army and don't mind being filmed. Also, if you know a great fan who may not have seen this post - please tell us about them!
Rather than posting replies on the forum it would be best if you could email us on:
nmadocumentary@gmail.com
Look forward to hearing from you all.
Matt Reid (Director)
Charlotte Marsden (Producer)

You can get in contact with the production team here!

I'll probably have the video camera with me in Manchester through to Amsterdam so if you want to chat in Portuguese no worries as long as I can ask the questions in English or German.

Hi Heloisa,
I really love this band and the whole family thing.
I was in London and Manchester last december and I had a really warming reception from the family, never will forget... and the gigs were amazing...
I was planning to attend the Beautiful Days Festival this year, but it runs out of tickets... shame on me !!!! (maybe someome has a spare ....)
The "Paraiba" is called Aramy Fablicio and he actually lives on a cavern and work as an Ambientalist... such a figure !!!
Regards
Fabiano FBIBRAZIL
-
You can also tell the story about "Paraiba"... the guy who lives in the desert and loves NMA! Oh, my God!
Enviromentalist Aramy Fablicio lives in the Brazilian northeastern city of Fagundes, state of Paraiba, and can be reached at http://www.aramyfablicio.org/
There you can read all about his relentless environmental work. For non-English speakers, there's a bit of translated stuff that I'd done at the bottom of the home page as he is trying to do a bilingual site. I met him at NMA's 2007 gigs and he stayed at my house when the band returned to Sao Paulo in 2010. We met Justin and the guys outside the venue before the gig and Aramy took lots of pics with the band.
-
I forgot all about this. Is it too late to submit a story?
-
great idea
-
I think I made myself available for the intrerview but I doubt it will never happen at this stage
-
Hum... I sent an email too... no answer.
Maybe they have enough stuff! ;)

When is the release date? According to http://tribe4mian.wordpress.com: "The film is currently being shot and will be released early 2012"
I see the Killing Joke documentary is now finished & being organised for theatrical release (then they always were theatrical). Would be awesome to watch both back to back . .
-

I saw a trailer of KJ's documentary and I'm looking forward to that too. T'would be fab to watch them if they get released at the same time, preferably this year. I wrote to Matt & Viv and no news yet on this.
-
No news of the documentary?
On NMA's biography it is written that its release will coincide with the release of the new album (Spring 2013, i guess)
-
Anything new here?
-
Good question well made
-
From the main page:
The film documentary about the band that awarding winning director Matt Reid has been making for the last two years, and to which many people have already contributed, should be finished soon. Matt and the film’s producers are aiming for a special limited cinematic release to coincide with the release of the new album. There are also plans for a special 96 page magazine on NMA past, present and future to accompany this. We will welcome any ideas and contributions for this project.
-
I might be a little late, but I'd have a cute information to give you.
I'm a Croatian studying in Korea and at our school (HUFS - Hankuk Uiniversity of Foreign Studies), in the English Writing course we touched the topic about poetry and lyrics, so we had to choose one and present it in class. After deep thinking and rethinking I chose Drag It Down, so I let them listen to the whole song, shown them the lyrics and discussed it shortly because of the time limit.
-
Does anyone know if the band are planning to have special screenings of the documentary around the country?
Ps the video for March in September has got me really buzzing for the new album, the tour and the documentary, it really cannot come quick enough.
-
NMA at Sundance Film Festival for the documentary?
Great news!
Here it is, on amazon.co.uk:
New Model Army celebrate 30 years of releasing music this year with what the critics are calling their best ever album Between Dog and Wolf . Mixed by Joe Barresi (Queens of the Stone Age, Soundgarden, Tool, Bad Religion) in L.A. The album sounds distinctly different to any previous NMA album, with comparisons to Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Peter Gabriel and Pink Floyd. A New Model Army documentary feature film Between Dog and Wolf: The New Model Army story has been filmed and will be released in early 2014 in UK independent cinemas, and has been entered for the Sundance Film festival. The first video from the album March in September is edited from the film. Album features stunning artwork from longtime collaborater Joolz. Album snippets teaser audio has been set to animated album artwork to be posted on line to build preorders and excitement.

Shitting crikey! NMA at the Sundance film festival?
Is it too much to hope that NMA might take on the same status as ANVIL, a band forgotten by much of the world but who suddenly become highly regarded thanks to a brilliant documentary? I'm not a huge fan of Anvil, but that documentary gave them a whole new lease of life and introduced their music to a whole new audience who wouldn't have otherwise checked out their stuff...
As for independant cinemas... The Cornerhouse in Manchester, please... :P
These are exciting times for all us New Model Army fans...
-
Sundance would be awesome for NMA!!!
Maybe that Robert Redford is a big fan of NMA like Russell Crowe and Sam Worthington seem to be? ;)
Master Ray, can you imagine a Dario Argento or De Palma film with a NMA soundtrack? ha ha ;)
As for independant cinemas... The Cornerhouse in Manchester, please... :P
I really hope that there will be also a french release for the documentary...maybe a french/german tv channel like Arte would be interested to pick the documentary's rights? i've seen on this tv channel a few clips of NMA on music shows like "Tracks", through the years.
-
Any updates on this? I believe Sundance has started, is the NMA documentary still being premiered here?
-
Doesn't look to be, from the website.
-
Doesn't look to be, from the website.
That's a shame... that documentary about Anvil (loved that, BTW) put them on so many people's radar that would otherwise be unaware of them... I'm sure that the NMA documentary would have done the same for the lads...
I guess Sundance is just going, yet again, to be about films with gay cowboys eating pudding...
;D
-

Im not overly convinced. The Anvil doc made great viewing due to the band and story - the music was pretty incidental. Loads of bands make music docs, but there isnt really the "story" to go with it, and so they are only of interest to the fans. Obviously we all reckon the music in the NMA doc will be ace, and im really looking forward to it, but i'm not sure there is a "story" that'll get the average non-fan interested

I can see your point. Rush were the subject of a documentary a couple of years ago and it was fantastic. There is a real story behind that band and the success, failure, triumph and tragedy that affected them was covered well along with the actual music.
However the band's story comes across I know I will enjoy the documentary and can't wait to see it :)
-
But, JohnnyM, turning it around, there may be a lot of people who have no idea what NMA sound like and may say 'damn, this is GOOD'... :o
I still think that the 30-year+ history of NMA is a story worthy of investigation and illumination...

As I said - im really looking forward to it. I just cannot see it being an Anvil style career changing film.

It's march already and still no news. Last info I got from Matt Reid himself was that the thing is finished and is now in the hands of german production company 'The Match Factory' who wanted to try to enter it into some film festivals. I contacted them to try to get some info on a possible date for a public release but there was no response :(
Any news available inside the NMA camp?
-
Found this snippet in Jonathan Green's LinkedIn profile !
"Producer of New Model Army documentary feature film "Between Dog and Wolf: The New Model Army story" sold worldwide by The Match Factory for release in cinemas Autumn 2014."
Was hoping we'd get to see it before Autumn.

And the meaning is:
the film is ready to be presented by a company, willing to pay some xxx pounds and then we have to wait for the date, the company is willing to sell cinema tickets or to sell it as a dvd without presentimng it in a cinema?
And the rights to present it go to a company and we fans in a worst case will never be able to see it (cinema, tv, dvd)? :'(
Viv - please give us some details !!!

London’s biggest film export event returns with a new name and strong selection of upcoming titles.
This year’s London Screenings (June 23-26) marks the 11th edition of the capital’s biggest film export event and has been given a make-over for 2014.
It has dropped the previous title of the London UK Film Focus (LUFF) and will introduce various new strands. But organisers are quick to point out this isn’t a case of reinventing the event - more of “buffing it up” after more than a decade.
“Everyone felt that after doing it for 10 years, maybe it was time for a bit of a facelift,” says Adrian Wootton, CEO of Film London, which organises the London Screenings.
The budget of around $330,000 is roughly the same as in previous years. The key difference is that the event, which generates an estimated $8m a year in international business for British films and sales agents, has secured multi-year funding.
Helena Mackenzie, head of inward investment and business development at Film London, adds: “It’s a natural time to look back at what you’ve done and look at some of the ways you can improve.”
Around 120 buyers are confirmed to attend including representatives from North American firms TLA (Raymond Murray), Tribeca (Alison Diviney) and Mongrel Media (Andrew Frank).
French buyers include Diaphana (Karin Beyens) and Wild Bunch (Marie-Pierre Valle); German buyers include Ascot Elite (Stephan Giger) and Prokino (Ira Von Gienanth); and Italian buyers include Eagle Pictures (Maria Grazia Vaira).
“I do think it is critical that the UK has a dedicated event for British films and British sales companies. God knows, we work in a very overcrowded and highly competitive marketplace,” says Stephen Kelliher, head of sales and marketing at the UK’s Bankside Films, which will be showing the trailer for X + Y starring Asa Butterfield in the “Coming Soon” section.
New Sections
Distributors have sometimes grumbled about the uneven quality of the selection. But the fact they keep coming back in huge numbers - and acquire British films - suggests the event retains its appeal for them.
One innovation likely to plase buyers is the introduction of “invitation only” screenings of some high profile films by leading companies such as Altitude Film Entertainment, Embankment Films and Protagonist Pictures.
There is also a new “Coming Soon” section, focusing on pre-sales and newer titles. The idea, Mackenzie explains, is to present material that buyers will not have encountered before.
The films already represented by sales companies are presented in Showcase. The Breakthrough section highlights films from emerging talent.
“We’re not just resting on our laurels,” Wootton notes. “It’s a good event (already) but we’ve done something that hopefully makes it even more useful to the sales and acquisition community.”
Speak ot sales agents and they enthuse about the relaxed atmosphere at the London Screenings.
“You talk about business certainly and the objective is to do business. But it is done in a very conducive atmosphere,” Kelliher comments. “That goes a long way to facilitating deals later in the year.”
Premieres
Films receiving premieres at the London Screenings include:
Between Dog And Wolf, a documentary about cult band New Model Army, sold by The Match Factory;
Dough, John Goldschmidt’s bakery-based family drama starring Jonathan Pryce, sold by Umedia;
Killing Joke - The Death & Resurrection Show, a punk documentary, sold by Kevin Williams’ Elixir;
Peterman, Mark Abraham’s crime drama, sold by Park Entertainment;
Rio 50°, Julien Temple’s Brazilian music documentary, sold by Metro International;
Seve, the biopic of late golf chamption Seve Ballesteros, sold by The Salt Company;
Shooting For Socrates, directed by James Erskine and starring John Hannah, sold by Metro International;
The Greatest Englishman, Justin Hardy’s Victorian era drama about the first man to swim the English Channel, sold by Manifest;
The Guvnors, a bruising London gangland drama, sold by Metrodome International;
We Are Many, an activist documentary, sold by Metro International.
Meanwhile, Bankside will be flagging its romantic comedy The Big Shoe starring Kristen Stewart and Jim Sturgess and looking for further pre-sales on US drama Freeheld, starring Julianne Moore and Ellen Page.
Ben Roberts, director of the BFI Film Fund, will be tub-thumping on behalf of the current BFI-supported movies in production and post-production, among them Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster.
Films showcased at the Screenings can sometimes capture buyers’ imaginations. For example, Dexter Fletcher’s Wild Bill was released by Universal UK after being introduced to buyers at the Screenings in 2011.
Regardless of whether or not deals are done over the next few days, the sellers see the event as an ideal way for beginning negotiations that may take unto Toronto and the AFM to conclude.
The organisers are still exploring potential collaboration with the Edinburgh International Film Festival (June 18-29), which runs at the same time and is also supported by the BFI. At this stage, although relations between the two events are cordial, no-one has come up with a practical way of them working together.
-
Jonathan Green, manager of New Model Army, is posting things like "1st cinema viewing "Between Dog & Wolf:The New Model Army story" @officialnma went well. Thanks to @BFI @Film_London @TheMatchFactory TIAGD" on Twitter and it is not possible to get any information out to those who have contributed and are waiting for months for some news? Strange... :(
-
I heard sometime last year that JS was not too happy with the finished film, and kind of distanced himself from it. Reasons being the film was too much about the past, and not enough about the band today, and going forward for the future. Also the role of Joolz played down as not a major contributor to the whole NMA picture.
-
If that's true, then we as fans may be in for a disappointment when we see it. I look forward to seeing it though.
Thanks for posting the article for non-subscribers, MARKXE.
-
Must emphasise, this is what I heard, I do not know it to be fact, that can only come from the man himself. But, it may explain partly the very long delay from competition to release.
I also heard the film was sold to a German production company by the Producer.
-

i wish that the film has been bougt by and for France, please!! :)
No online reviews of this documentary yet??

Bestill my beating heart!
By the way, did anyone see this little vid? Since it says the doc has mostly old stuff, it might (or might not) be included. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luqKAkMZJ0Y

It was nice to see Tommy, thanks for sharing.

Waiting, always waiting... ;)
Another month and a half passed without any news on this. Tried to contact The Match Factory once more but without any response. Probably Mr. Reid caught something on film which causes the MI6/NSA/CIA to keep this thing hidden in some Area 51... 8)
-
It's being shown at a film festival in London in a month, so hopefully it'll then get more showings elsewhere:

I hope so to. Was anticipating a premier in Bradford. Great news to hear its completely finished and out.
-
12 quid for a West End cinema seemed reasonable...........
-
12 quid for a West End cinema seemed reasonable...........
Not so much if you have to come from further north and have hotel and travel costs... yet I'd still pay it if things were financially better...
I agree, I was hoping for a premier a bit closer to the NMA homelands, but WTF, maybe there will be another big showing...? :(
-
Not so much if you have to come from further north and have hotel and travel costs...
um.... true but equally £10 for Joolz & Justin in Hebden Bridge is very reasonable but if you're coming from down Sarf and have hotel and travel costs...... maybe we should both feel a bit lucky that we don't live in New Zealand :-* (Nothing against New Zealand but it was the furthest place away from England I could think of that NMA hadn't played & probably never would)
It would be great if there were more screenings but I can't think there would be enough demand in one place for that, we're all too spread out. Or are there other regional film festivals where it could get an airing? Is it more likely that it will be picked up by TV Channels that broadcast music documentaries? Genuinely curious, I've no idea how that world works. I was just mildly and pleasantly surprised that a cinema ticket in central London only cost 12 quid ;D
-
Sorry, Anna, if it sounded like I was having a go... not my intention, truly. :-\
You're right, there's so many NMA fans worldwide who may NEVER see the lads playing live... :'(
I seem to remember you were coming to Nottingham... that still happening?
-
Encouragingly, this says there will be UK wide screenings in November to be announced shortly;
http://www.hustlerstreetfilms.com/
There's a nice little preview to watch too :)

Excellent news :)

Trailer is well good. And more screenings too. Good stuff.

There may be a screening at Nottingham Broadway on Monday 17th November, was on their site earlier and saw it listed, but now it's not there?! ???

Dunno, old son, still looking into the various options... have to say, seeing the big damn documentary in the town from whence it emerged looks pretty tasty... also being meaning to check out the film / TV museum since I saw it last, which was about 25 years ago... also seeing about getting time off work...
But, then again, a trip to Nottingham is always a damn fine thing when you live in a town as shitty as mine...
I'm knackered right now after a long and hard week, mate, gonna get an early night and see how I feel tomorrow... ;)
-
Yes, I think a lot of us hoped it would get its Premier in Bradford. Was very tempted myself when I found out, but knowing it is in Nottingham two days later, logic dictates for me, a no brainer
I wonder if many will go to all showings like following a tour ?
-
Will deffo look into Notts, especially seeing as getting to Bradford is bloody expensive... let's see if I can get a couple of days off work, especially as I really need a couple of days off in December...

For those who are at the London screening today ask to Matt Reid and/or Justin if they are going to release the documentary in France, theaters or dvd/blu ray!!
Thanks! ;) 8)

As soon as we hear anything we will announce :)

This is from Matt Reid (assuming he's the real one) on some NMA Facebook group: "The proper DVD is v close now.". Hmm.

Roll on that then

This is from Matt Reid (assuming he's the real one) on some NMA Facebook group: "The proper DVD is v close now.". Hmm.
Along with DVD from Christmas shows (the "official bootleg" as a part of CD/DVD package) will make the spring more joyful than usual! Keep fingers crossed.

As soon as we hear anything we will announce :)
Hi Viv.

or
the film is a region 2 DVD ??????

Hi Simon,
here is a link to the region code
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code
code 0 - worldwide, code 2 europe - but you can change it, if you now a bit about players or comptuters ...
you can play each dvd on blue ray devices, but a simple dvd decice can`t play a blue ray ...
and a blue ray can is good for some hours of video in the quality of a dvd
( http://www.bluray-disc.de/faq/was-ist-der-unterschied-zwischen-blu-ray-und-der-dvd) .....
But NMA has only the right to sell this documentary and no influence of the things on a this dvd/blue ray
cheers

As lotus says you should be able to over-ride the region code on your dvd player, best bet google your make and model number plus override region code, normally just a few button presses via the remote
-
I'm looking at my steelbox DVD cover and it definitely says 'Region 0', which means it should be playable on any DVD player anywhere in the world...
-
Hello,
I bought the dvd and I'm looking for the French subtitles for the bonuses. Would someone have an idea?
Thank you
-
Yeah Brol, listen to it over and over again ;D
Seriously, I'd like to help you but my english is not good enough to do that
-
My english is awful and Google trad is my friend but it is ineffective for oral...
