Title: Help save a dog - this will only take thirty seconds.‏
Post by: jackroadkill on July 10, 2012, 05:42:47 PM
Hi everyone,

I apologise if this has been posted previously, but felt that it was worth a try anyway...

Please do me a favour and take a moment to sign the petition contained in the link below. The short version of the story is this:

Lennox is an American Bulldog cross, who is the pet of a family from Belfast. He has been removed from them and is being held against the family's wishes whilst Belfast City Council attempt to get them to sign Lennox over to them and have him destroyed. The reason they want to do this is because they have (wrongly) identifiied him as a "pitbull-type" dog, who should be destroyed under the Dangerous Dogs Act for NI. This dog is not dangerous and has never attacked, bitten, threatened or otherwise hurt anybody.

I don't usually go in for this type of thing (because they're a pain in the arse), but the thought of having a beloved animal taken and destroyed based on the opinion of one person (see story on the link) is reprehensible, cruel and unconstitutional. Please, if you have a minute, pass this link on to anybody who you feel may sign the petition and sign it yourself.

Justice for Lennox!

Regards,

JR

Done. I'm vegan and hate any cruelty to animals. Sick of people treating them as subordinate to us humans.  >:(

Well done JR.

Done. I'd hate anything to happen to our two dogs.

Did the pet photo thread get wiped in the last clean-up?

Very sad day.  :'( Breed Discrimination Laws are proven to not work and in this case Belfast just made one huge mistake and created a huge PR disaster of titanic proportions. This even made CNN evening news here in the States!

The problem is owner education and in this case the owners were educated and the dog was not an apparent threat.

Can you imagine if the local animal control officer turned up at your house with a tape measure to see if your dog had similar dimensions to certain type of dog and then taking it away and destroying it? Sounds more like canine ethic cleansing and not a modern society....  >:(

Now we need to see Belfast Northern Ireland voters demand some changes to their Dangerous dogs act because of this. Obviously it severely flawed and needs to be changed.

Well, we tried....

Thanks very much to everyone who took the time to sign the petition in an attempt to save a beloved pet who had never done any harm.

Another victory for the labellers, eugenicists and scaremongers.  Never mind that the dog was a loved member of a family, eh?  As long as the box-tickers have their way then nothing else matters.

Makes me sick.

Hate how in the BCC press release they say he was "humanely put to sleep"... two years after been ripped from his family and locked up in a pound for over 2 years.

Very humane indeed... more like barbaric   :(

Did you see the pictures of him before and during his time in the pound?  Beforehand he was fit and healthy, but during his incarceration he was overweight and covered in sores.  Poor dog.

Very sad to hear this news.

Killing can never, by definition, be humane.

This has really got under my skin.  I know that a petition is not much more than a means of registering your opposition to something but I couldn't not sign it.  We have two dogs and they are the centre of our family life.  The thought that one person's opinion could cause them to be forcibly removed, imprisoned, neglected and destroyed makes me retch.  I mean, for Pete's sake, there are strains of bee that are known to be aggressive but nobody goes around measuring your bees (this is how they determined that Lennox was what was described as a "pitbull-type" - BCC's inverted commas, not mine - dog) and killing them depending on the results.

BCC also said that when Lennox was in their, ahem, care, he would go from being sedate and placid to noisy and aggressive in an instant.  I don't speak for anyone else but I'd probably do the same under similar circumstances.  Had he a track record of harmful behaviour I could at least see BCC's logic, but to destroy a dog on such trumped-up and erroneous charges is just sick.  BCC cited threats being made, disruptions to BCC's workings by members of the public etc etc.  Whilst I don't condone some of the more extreme actions that took place, I fail to understand why someone involved in this process didn't ask "Hang on, why are the people we serve so pissed off about this and what can we do to address that?".  Madness.
