Agreed (well, not about your shoulder, can't comment on that one  :) ). Great night. 5 hours and 300 mile round trip was totally worth it.

It was awesome - great crowd as ever and only a tiny bit of idle chatter during the J&D set (people just can't help themselves!).

Highlights:

Before I Get Old (JS&DW set)
Turn Away (JS&DW set)
March in Septemer - what a belter, just love that drum beat.
Flying Through the Smoke and Red Earth - great additional percussion by Ceri.
1984
Spirit of the Falklands

One of my fave ever sets and gigs. Also loved Justin's comment to the security guard about towers / shoulder rides: "They've been in training for months and if they fall it's not your fault!" Priceless!

Excellent comment and fair play to security they didn't bother anyone :)

Barty I did have to ask one lady behind me to pipe down a bit when chatting to her mate but she had already blotted her copy book with me as I overheard her say she preferred The Levellers ( as you can imagine a red rag to a bull for me) but apart from that I couldnt hear too much idle chatter at all.
I was over come at one point to tell Michael how much we loved him (sorry but the occassion just got to me)
What a brilliant gig and who else could you see that would make you feel how I feel today :)

Great night. Six hundred mile round trip helped by a night at the Prem Inn. Idle chatter around us at the start. Politely told them to shut the f*** up, worked a treat.

Good meet pub, great to see Belzza again, you missed  a great curry mate, as Bazza will testify. Cheers also to your mate, very interesting to chat to. Hope he got the bus home okay. 1984 was a highlight. Never understand why the volume is turned up to distorted level at the end, but hey ho. Brilliant gig. Already looking forward to Xmas gigs abroad next year, and any other tour. Cheers again Bazza for the company, if not always the directions....

Loved the gig - was excellent as usual (apart from being moaned at the whole way through the JS and DW set by a "witch" who proceeded  to put a curse on me and the chap next to me because we wanted to listen to the set without her moaning in our ears).

Am not a particular fan of lead guitar but by 'eck, Marshall's bloody fantastic.

Amazing!

Thanks to the guys who hoisted me up during one of the songs (sorry too many newkie browns to remember which one it was). :o

At one point i was stood by the bar searching for my brother-in-law who came with me. My thought process was to try and identify him by his balding head. I suddenly realised after looking over the crowd there were a lot of people that matched that description. I soon gave up! :D

Some of us are getting on a bit as fans!

Hi all,

Cracking set list, it's nice to see a wide variety of older songs. For some reason, I have no memory of Ceri's drumming at all. I assume I was lost in the moment...

Top night and thanks for the set list, reads as well as it sounded.

This time my turn to lose a watch in the pit(s) (there seem to be a number of sprawling interrelated pits at Rock City) but it only cost me £7.50 and I did find half the strap at the end!
A sacrifice worth making I feel.

One heck of a curry afterwards in the Indian just down the hill and round the corner.  Didn't make it to the NMA disco and was too knackered for Ferocious Dog (we have one at home anyway).

Great to see pretty much everyone there - shame you couldn't make it Darren. And didn't see JME?

Roll on new album and supporting tour(s).

What a set! I think The Charge set the tone for the rest of the night. Its one of my faves and seems to have a new life/urgency/impact/power breathed into it. That has been my increasing experience at the last 3 gigs attended prior to this. Those being Strummercamp-Bradford-Bristol. I think that yet again Justin has made a wise addition to the band and the new kid's arrival is just as important as the advent of Marshall a few years back.  These last fours gigs seem reminiscent in sound and energy of those nights I remember 20 year ago.

Can't wait for next year and the new material. March In September was (at first listen) a mixture of both catchy and hypnotic. If Rock City is their new Xmas date (as suggested by Justin last night) then I for one won't complain. We Londoners have had a bit easy over the past decade or two. The sound and light show in there is second to none and the local hotels are bloody cheap to boot. Merry Xmas y'all!

talking through a band's performance is bad enough...and the height of rudeness to the band and their fans....but to say you prefer the Levs to NMA....that's just shocking  ;) ;D

Absolutely storming gig.......... The 3 Euro gigs were also raging, Melkweg just edged it for me. But only just.........
My sincere appreciation to my brave and sturdy foundations by the way!!!!!!!! THANK YOU LADS!!!!!!!! It's all too rare a chance fer the base to be the top of the heap! =) Muchos Gracias! 3 times this year has more than doubled my previous number times up top!  ;) You're all superstars!

I really liked the set list aswell, covers so many bases, and throws in the odd curve ball surprise! 1984 and Brave New World were brilliant to finally see get a serious airing!

Yeah keep forgetting they did Brave New World, what a great set list it was - and to have Vengeance and ILTW as a second encore takes some beating really

Completely agree. Seems like Ceri's arrival has breathed a new shot of fire into the whole band and fury into the live sound - this year's gigs have hit like a hammer.

Title: Gig at Rock City
Post by: Shush on December 31, 2012, 03:55:26 PM
Sorry for my late adition, I have been waiting for my sign up to the forum to come through.

Have to say, what a totally superb gig at Rock City Nottingham just before Xmas.

Have been out of things for many years, but  did take  my son to Rock City November 2012 to his first gig to see Architect (a bit too loud and fast for me) I was the oldest there by a long way, and felt like a teacher at a school disco. While I was there, I saw advertised my all time favourate band were playing on the 22 of Dec, so thought , if I can go and what a band I don,t like, I should go to see one that I do..

Last time I saw NMA it was also at Rock City about 10 years ago. A very different gig to 22/12. About a third as many people, the lights on the crowd , and JS with short hair. Still good though with a little mosh pit to the middle.

With my wife on 22/12 we went for a drink first at the Tap and Tumbler. When we first walked in, I thought I had just gone through a time warp to New Years Eve, as the place was packed solid at 6pm. When I eventually got to the bar, I realised the place was full of forty somethings sporting NMA tattoos and attire. Clearly a lot of followers from all over had given themselves an early Xmas present with this gig

When we got inside, we had never seen it so packed, we used to go there every Saturday night (and we met there), went to loads of gigs, but never have we ever seen it so full, and It was nice to see most of the people there were in the same age range as ourselves.

The atmosphere was great. dark, packed solid, and friendly. When the full band came on, we made our way to the front, and it was superb. Got totally into it. Music was superb, played lots of my faves. Much more interaction from JS with the crowd that last time I saw them.Went for a mosh a couple of times (51 state, and the Hunt) came away dripping in sweat, some of it my own !!

Best gig we have ever been to. Was delighted when JS said they had already booked with Rock City for same time 2013, already looking forward to it. Over two hours of playing, I bet the band needed a sit down and well deserved cup of tea afterwards. Absolutely top end. JS has still got it, what a great front man.
