Been out tonight with a couple of long time Strangler fans(one who has been to a few NMA gigs in the 90's and another who has never seen NMA before)The question arose(after I kept going on about BDAW).If NMA and the Stranglers were playing in the same town on the same night who would I go to see?My answer was "If my Strangler fan mates were with me,I'd go to the Stranglers gig,but if I was on my own I'd go to the NMA gig.(I could always catch up with NMA on the next gig(gigs).
Given a similar situation who would you go to see before NMA?
-
No brainer for me, would go see Killing Joke over any band on any given night!
As for a toss up between NMA and The Stranglers well that would be a dilemma! But probably NMA would pip it on recent experience. Both are great live bands and with the exception of Killing Joke for me no other bands can touch them in a live setting.
Heaven for me would be all three on the same bill now that would throw up a whole new dilemma, what running order would that take????

I can honestly say there's no-one I'd rather see than NMA - I must have seen 'em 30 odd times more than any other band. In fact, I'm often at other bands' gigs and just before they come on I think "I wish this was NMA!". If it was a toss-up between Fields of the Nephilim and The Cure....(two bands I like equally)....I'd really struggle but would pick the Nephilim, unless The Cure were playing in a similarly small venue!
Talking of the Stranglers, I really ought to make an effort to see 'em again.....saw 'em at the Concert Hall in Nottingham in the late '80s and loved the show.....don't know why I haven't bothered since....maybe I (wrongly) assumed they'd not be as good without Hugh.

We were in this kind of situation when Wovenhand were playing on night one of NMA's first 30th anniversary gig in Cologne ... only 2 km away from the E-Werk.
We went to see NMA.
I wouldn't be so sure now ;)
WH's last in Hamburg was unbelievable, and among the best gigs I've EVER seen :o :o :o
Yes, I think I would go and see Wovenhand...or maybe not?!? :P

If Husker Du were ever to reform, although it's highly unlikely, I'd watch them over any other band or artist. I could of seen them back in June 1987 but attended a wedding do instead thinking I'd catch them next time around but unfortunately for me they split up January 1988. As we all know a lot of bands reform and go on to tour and release new material but such is the acrimony between the band members it looks like it will never happen :'(

I was supposed to be going to Finsbury Park in 1991 to see Rollins Band / Killing Joke / NMA / The Mission.....but it clashed with a workmate's wedding reception.....I was torn but did the 'decent thing' and went to the wedding reception.....the music was typically shocking and the bride and groom never even spotted me....all I could think about all evening was "sometimes we all gotta go round wearing a suit and tie". It didn't help when my bro' told me what an amazing gig it was the next day....still, he bought me a t-shirt which I've still got.

Tour coming up in March again by the sound of it!!

Thanks Claire - I'll definitely make an effort to see 'em this time.... :)

Wow, Barty, I was at that Finsbury Park gig... you deffo did the wrong thing. Personally, I'd have faked an illness or possibly my own death... ;D
Was it really 22 years ago?
And you missed out the other band on the bill, Bleach. You know, Bleach..? Nope, me neither...
-
dilla, I would look at the bigger picture. If its a band you love, you are going to enjoy the gig set to the full. What about the pre-gig meet, and the meet up afterwards.
When seeing the NMA , that is as much part of the night as the show itself

I know mate - I regretted it as soon as my bro and mate set off. What a 'nana - I still can't believe I missed it. Still, made up for it later in 1991 when I did 2 nights at Bradford's Queen's Hall. We slept in the bus-station for the first night, sat in a pub nursing 1 pint between 3 of us for about 2 hours the second day and managed to stay in some kind soul's house that night. Great memories. I remember Justin wearing a leather waistcoat with the classic NMA logo on the back.

Very valid point Shush - totally agree.

Shush.Agree with you you about pre gig meets etc.My Strangler mates night out was the first time we'd been out together in over 10 years. We used to do loads of Strangler gigs from '79 onwards. Now I usually do 2 a year compared with at least 6 NMA.So as an overall event(if it was the 3 of us,I'd have to opt for the Stranglers gig because of the company I'd be with.(One mate lives in Thailand and doesn't come home very often). The Ideal situation would be both playing on the same bill ;D

Now you're talking.......

But NMA / The Stranglers... who would headline?
:o
-
Not really important who headlines as long as they both play long sets.Toss a coin to see who goes on first.

Good plan.....
And Killing Joke as special guests??
How bloody marvelous would that be?!!!!
-
I'd see NMA - but then they are really my favourite band, bar none. Although, if they were playing the same night as Killing Joke, I'd probably have to think about it for a while. ;D
My gig dilemma is that I'm performing the SAME night as NMA are in London, and I'm performing a couple hours away from London. Pain. In. The. Arse.
So, I'm going to Manchester instead. Win.

That one never happened. It was an over-ambitious festival/event initially put on by people who probably didn't know what doing so meant, and that got pulled quite a bit in advance with some excuse or other
-
Thanks for that Danny.Think it would have been a belter of a night.Always regretted missing it,and to now find out it never happened. :( :(But here's hoping. You never know ;D

I had an experience where a gig clashed a couple of years ago.
I had tickets to see Rush at the MEN Arena on 19th May 2011. I was in the second row. The closest to the stage I'd ever been at a Rush concert. I was very excited. Rush are my favourite band and I've seen them around 10 times.
19th May 20011 was also my mothers 65th birthday.
She understood.
They had come all the way from Canada so we celebrated her birhtday the next day ::)

Love me a bit of Rush, but I have to say, I've fallen out of touch with them in recent years... recommend me a recent album, mate!

Two nights and they swap?? ::)

Hello Master Ray
The latest one. Clockwork Angels. It is fantastic. People who have been Rush fans and have fallen out of love with them 20 years ago are raving about it.
It came out last year. Read a few reviews of it I don't think I've seen a negative review of it.
Enjoy :)
