I think on this album, Justin Sullivan has really come up with some very beautiful and emotional vocal lines. I know he usually does, but this time he has taken it even further, in my opinon.
For Instance, at the moment, I am really struck by lines such as
-If I told you not to look, would you do that for me... this one time in Pull The Sun
and
- We were rising to break, like the sea against the shore in Lean Back And Fall
What is your favorite BDAW vocal line?
Maybe I missed something :)
Thank you

"I have a friend on the other side, we smile across the wire"
I think my favorite song on the album. But then again the more i listen to it the better it gets.
Honestly, in my opinion............... the best album by far.

And Abraham rose, took his only son, and knife and tinder in his hand, and setting out across the desert and up into the scrubland hills, he bound the boy Isaac to the stone, raised the blade and waited for the miracle.
But the wind blows silent across the hills, across the dead and the empty hills,
dead, like the god that never came, like your face, the day that you turned away.
And then Mr Sullivan lets out such a brilliant scream...
Spine-chilling, every time, one of NMA's best ever songs and one I dearly hope they will put back in the set sometime soon...

God damn the Master Ray..........i thought it was meant to be from lines from the new album. :'(
I love that line too. :D
-
It WAS meant only for the new album, posted bright and clear. But some are more observant than others ;)
And while I am here, I really should add this one.
-You were so much in love with her in the beginning of Summer Moors
Brilliant delivery by JS.
-
So you tried to make family,
But nothing was given.
So you gave them your own blood,
but all of it stolen.
Coming through to the end of a divorce that has seen a great deal of acrimony from people I sacrificed a decade going the extra mile for with little to show for it, March in September is alternately cathartic and upsetting at the moment.

Um, sorry, I must have missed out the BDAW bit of the heading...
*skulks away in embarassment...*

Do you know what i very nearly did the same thing!!!
Glad you did first though. ;)

"As we slashed and we burned and laid waste to it all"
It summarises so much of everything.
-
Hmm, quite a few really but these ones get me every time:
'We can watch our children growing away into the people that they'll become'
'Ain't it always the ones that want to be saved that do all of the saving'
'And when the music's gone the silence is still ringing, with all these conversations between the dead and the living'.
-
Maybe this time not coming back....just another setting sun....
No-one else could sing it so beautifully.
-
And i'm ok up here flying, I just don't know where to land
It took me nearly a lifetime to understand
the world has no anchor and no chains
But there's many many fav lyrics in BDAW, I honestly think that this is the best album in a long time, maybe even best album ever (But then again it's a bit hard to compare to the others because it'S so different). I LOVE it! (Except 'lean back and fall' of course. :)

I love the lyrics of "Seven times" too!
"The tried to bring you their love and fear
But you wouldn't receive it
I tried to tell you that you had everything that you need
But you would never believe it
So you tried..."
"You can count up everything that you have it never stops the craving"
"It's a very long way, far, far away
from you hometown streets and all those rusting mills
and they never could understand why you had to go, why you had to go"
All the lyrics in "I need more time":
"As one by one the faces we love slide away in deep, deep waters
I've still so much to give, i've still so much to learn
I've still so much to love, still so much to burn
I need more time, i need more time..."
"Impossible the desire, impossible the dream"
"Now the years they have gone live thieves in the dark
Did your eyes follow them after into the night?"
"And me, i've got a black place in my heart..."
"Where the breath is sweeter and the lights are diamond
Where the blood runs faster and the taste is stronger
And the night uncoils moving around us
Come, take you want in the place..."
The lyrics of "Qasr El Nil Brige"

The sleeve notes as ever read like fine poetry.
After listening to the album now more times than I would like to admit, the song which stands out most to me now is Ghosts.
"the Ghosts are part of us" makes a big impression on me. I have lost people very close to me, but they are still part of me in my fond memories of them. When we are dead and gone, I think we are still alive to some extent in the memories of the people we have loved and left behind.
Thats what the song says to me.
Apologies to JS if it is meant to mean something else :)

There are so many great lines on the new album I'll have to have think about it!
-
Looks like both of us misunderstood Master Ray - I thought this was about vocals rather than lyrics but having read the original post I stand corrected! D'oh!I'll get me thinking cap on......

I think that's exactly what makes a song great. The fact that you can apply the lyrics to your own situation. To me it also makes me remember loved ones I lost but also people from my past who no longer 'exist' in the way they did then, including myself.
It's a very melancholic song and I can't stop playing it.

Poignant genius

Shush, I think you nailed it. Justin said in a recent interview that it is a reference to the loss of Rob.

Maybe this time not coming back....just another setting sun....
No-one else could sing it so beautifully.
Agreed. LOVE that one.
Also, "You were so much in love with her that it drew you away"
So much emotion in that one line.
-
too many poetic lyrics of quality to mention - all good but particularly I like:
'I need to make good on the promises I made to the world when the world was moving slower'
Brilliant
JS: the people's poet - set to the world's best music
-
That line is on the back of a T-shirt I brought earlier this year from the shop. Now I know why ;)
-
I'd better preface this by saying it's a Saturday night, and I've had a couple of drinks, so excuse any waxing-lyrical ....!
For me a lot of the impact is simply very personal: for me, NMA have always spoken, about as eloquently as it's possible to, of love and loss and realisation and understanding - in essence, the too-many thunders and consolations of being here and now. BDAW, for me, adds to that by looking back at the same time.
And, again for me, the musical context is important - possibly just because of how I expect emotion to come through in music. Would the lyric "if I could only choose one moment to last forever, I would be here with you" sit happily in a jazz-funk track? I reckon I'd spew my dinner.
Favourite BDAW lines:
BDAW: "If I could only choose one moment to last forever, I would be here with you". Because of a great love lost.
Did You Make It Safe: last chorus, the way Justin sings "they'll never understand why you had to go, why you had to go" really strikes deep for me. I've left too many people on the wayside, none of them understanding why. Why it strikes deep is cos I don't really understand why myself, when I now look back.
Pull The Sun: "Me, I've got a black place in my heart". 'Nuff said.
Knievel: that moment of f&ck-you-all bitterness in the line "you only get from me what you pay me for" is priceless.
And maybe an oddball side-note but instantly when I listened to 'Summer Moors' I heard 'just another setting SON' rather than 'just another setting sun' - don't know if that was deliberate or happy coincidence but that's how it worked for me. Regardless, that instant (mis)reading nailed Summer Moors really deep for me.
-
Lyrics that are really hitting home at the moment
"And I'm lost here and I'm doubting myself
And I'm losing myself"
Oddly enough off my least favourite track
-
I watched you as tried n tried, to pull the sun from out of the sky.
The colours all run and the clouds collide, but that was never enough.....
And me, I've got a black place in my heart,
my favourite chord, my favourite card
That I draw every time, On these occasions............

Good one, Stoney.
I'll add
It took me a lifetime to realize the world has no anchor, and no chains.
-
Remember all those songs of love and freedom
As if they were the same thing
Now we know they were not the same thing
They echo in empty beauty down through the boarded-up streets
To the sound of closing doors and locking of the gates
-
my favourite vocal line has to be"and me ive got a black place in my heart,my favourite chord ,my favourite card ,that i draw every time on these occasions"From pull the sun,it gets me every time not just the lyrics but how justin sullivan sings it ,it proper touches me like.
-
There really are some great lines on the album and all the ones mentioned are ones I'd have chosen myself. I do like:
'I need to make good on the promises I made to the world when the world was moving slower'
'Remember all those songs of love and freedom, As if they were the same thing, Now we know they were not the same thing' - This song is one that has really crept up on me slowly and developed into one I love.
-

Agreed. LOVE that one.
Also, "You were so much in love with her that it drew you away"

The preceeding two lines building up to that are pretty fab too and with the music its a pretty deep and thought provoking song. Love it
-
Whether you liked the album or not, it's very hard to say that Justin's lyrics are disappointing...his usual brillant, moving, poetic songwriting, has done it again!
-
"Crash the gates of heaven wide, i'll take it now - and have a crack at the angels".......sublime..
-
"Crash the gates of heaven wide, i'll take it now - and have a crack at the angels".......sublime..
as he beat his wife & kids & beat the reporter half to death while his friend held him down for uncovering the truth probably highly incorrect, more likely jumping the lake of fire and failing ;)
-
Seven Times is the first song to reduce me to tears since New Dawn Fades. And it's the line :
We can watch our children growing away
Into the people that they'll become
Just Seven Times rain, Seven Times sun
Love my Daughter SO much :)
-
"If I could only choose one moment to last forever I would be here with you". Knocks all the wimpy love songs in the charts on their arse. Never has one line summed up the feeling of being with someone special better.
-
....and they tell me god is great but this I´ve never doubted
we each find wonder in the sky and in the mountains...
-
It could be seen most of you tend to choose lines that touch you somehow personally at a time.
Same thing with me and my wife. The lyrics of Did You Make it Safe and I Need More Time are the ones that makes us remember friends we used to know. We have not even even met some of them but know their mother or a son.
This time makes us a very heart-touching feel because of the good and bad things happened recently. While listening to BDAF it brings tears on our eyes very often. My wife's working fellow's child died at the age of 18 because of driving a car too fast on the ice. My friends mother I used to know died a month ago too. Our digger's driver's mother and his friend both died while the driver was doing work here at our courtyard... Just a phone call. There are good and bad things at the same time. You know the lyrics about how children get older too fast, how time is flying too fast? You remember the recent NMA gigs and listen to their new record...

After doing the entire November UK tour and meeting some amazing people, this has become my favorite line of the album. Sadly that moment did not last forever.
Also
"Now counting through these useless empty days
Of standing up so tall against the world
And I’m lost, I am lost and I can’t trust myself
Now I can’t trust myself
I am lost here and I’m doubting myself
And I’m losing myself
As I lean back and fall"
It's a very emotional lyric or at least for me.
-
"did you come to see a man fall.......or to see him fly"
To me it's the great question people should ask themselves when going to certain sporting events.
-
From the title track 'Narcotic dreams and miracles descending'
-
And if I could only choose one moment to last forever I would be here with you.
I really think this album is one of nma's best....
