Title: New Model Army Jazz standards Album
Post by: rick a. on February 04, 2014, 09:33:39 PM
Rod Stewart did it.....Linda Ronstadt did it......Brian Ferry did it....Paul McCartney did it....Rongo Starr did it....So why not New Model Army?
Yeah, it's jazz standards time. Over and over NMA have proven themselves to be unafraid of taking chances, changing direction, and with the track record of other rock artists, it could be BIG.

Just imagine Justin singing "only a paper moon", "moon river","I left my heart in san francisco", or any others in the great american jazz songbook. He's got the vocal chops to pull it off. This is an opportunity not to be ignored. Help spread the word and lets get the momentum rolling!

Like Johnny, I hate Jazz. Its a group of people playing their own bits to different songs at the same time. I feel I must refuse this particular offer  ;D

Not keen on Jazz.

So many people rave about it but I just can't get into it and it does sound like everyone is playing a different song at different speeds.

I likes that idea -

With a bit of free jazz thrown in for the instrumental section.
NMA plays Sun Ra - now that's got a ring to it.

That's enough, NMA jazz versions... none of us want that.

We all want NMA to go in a Belgian Hardcore dance direction, don't we..?  I mean, none of those annoying things like lyrics or instruments or anything..?

(ducks for cover...)  ;)

cc me please when you find one!
I guess the jazz standard idea wasn't a really good one. BUT, what about a christmas album? They are always fun and every group eventually releases one.

Speaking of christmas, has anyone seen this recent releaase of the Sex Pistols 1977 christmas at Huddersfield special? It's quite good.

BUMP!

LMAO!!!  All you people who posted on this thread are absolutely fcukin' fantastic, priceless, hilarious!  :D  I've never laughed so hard at anything I was reading before, great stuff!  ;D

On a more serious note, Mr. Sullivan's masterpiece solo effort,  "Navigating By the Stars",  in some ways touches upon the jazz realm, musical spectrum.  What I'd more like to see, or rather hear, is a jazz band  or  classical outfit cover either a few New Model Army and/or Justin Sullivan songs.  Such as the following artists/musicians have covered for the original bands/artists mentioned below.

Check out the links below, if interested.  If you're a fan of either  Boards of Canada (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boards_of_Canada),  Radiohead (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiohead),  OR  New Model Army, I would seriously love to hear your input or take on the following three covers.  If you know of any other great ones or a particular outfit that you'd love to see tackle an NMA or JS song, jump in here and let me know.  This would completely fascinate me, particularly because the three musical genres (rock, jazz, classical) are SO very, very different from one another.  8)

ORIGINAL   vs.  "JAZZ"  or  "CLASSICAL"  cover

"ROYGBIV"  by  Boards of Canada (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yT0gRc2c2wQ)  vs.  "ROYGBIV"  as covered by  The World (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFoz913B96Q)

"Everything You Do Is A Balloon"  by  Boards  of  Canada (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQEmaj9C6ko)  vs.  "Everything You Do Is A Balloon"  as covered by  LiarConfess & .Ruhepunkt (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mjPcJYx0uI)  OR  also covered by  Stargaze - St Giles Cripplegate, London (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVrVSEwKjCQ)

"Burn the Witch"  by  Radiohead (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yI2oS2hoL0k)  vs.  "Burn the Witch"  as covered by  Break of Reality (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_D-VCQQKT8)

So, what do you think, or how do you feel about  New Model Army / Justin Sullivan  songs being covered in a more  completely instrumental  Jazz  OR  Classical fashion?  Which song(s) do you think would work?  I'd love to know.  Thanking you in advance, for your replies to this question... thoughts and or suggestions.  :)

Ha, ha, thanks for bringing that up 8. I had a good laugh at the very funny suggestions here. Though they went more in the Christmas feel direction..."No-el Rest", muahaha..

As for the topic of NMA songs being covered by a jazz band. Of course i would like to listen to any interpretation by any artists who feel that they want to use a song by NMA and play with it. But i find i hard to think about a special song which would fit from my point of view. I think when an artists chooses a song to interpret, it will have a special meaning to them and that would be the cool thing about it.

I do love it when songs are being covered and also transformed into something new.

The only good cover of a nma song that i know so far, is of course the Sepultura - The Hunt (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqEVADldsSM[/url)

I like that version but i would call it a light-transformation and more a classical cover, the song hasn't changed that much.

Here are some examples of songs being re-worked on, which i really like:

A Perfect Circle doing People are People by Depeche Mode (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68vttSsr-ds[/url)

A Perfect Circle doing Imagine by John Lennon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rakape74oNY[/url)

I do love to listen to some jazz. I'm a big fan of esbjörn svensson trio
Esbjörn Svensson Trio - Dodge The Dodo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5L7j6qImrlM[/url)
and i've got some Blue Note records, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Grant Green which i totally love to listen to.

But what is jazz?

I also do love to listen to such things as Naked City - Latin Quarter (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DW5oyOMNaVE[/url)
or
Estradasphere - The Dance of Tosho & Slavi / Randy's Desert Adventure (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ID_GVybk77Q[/url)

and to me this is also jazz.

So, i couldn't really answer the question but any of these groups could do a nma cover and to me they could choose any song they want and i would love to hear that.
