Title: NEW bands that you're into...
Post by: Master Ray on March 27, 2014, 07:34:25 PM
OK, for pretty much a quarter of a century, I've always been looking out for new bands that I could really get into.  I'm always up for new music.  But I'm struggling nowadays.  So many bands that the music mags are raving on about just turn out to be... well, a bit shit.  Yes, some of it might be because of the fact that I'm starting to feel my age, but I think I know a thing or two about music and I know when hype gets in the way of quality tunes... and I'm usually right, so many of those over-hyped bands disappear within a year or two...

I'd love some recommendations from you lovely lot about NEW(ish) music.  By which I'll say that bands who have come into prominence / attention in the last five (or so) years and have gone into something like a career and a fanbase?

I'm gonna give you three examples of acts I've really gotten into, with videos (sorry if there a few crap ads before you can get into the tune...) I'd love for you to respond in kind. Feedback is very welcome.

First off, Frank Turner, a bit Levellers-y...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZ-D4jmkUiQ

Secondly, The Vaccines... yeah, some of their stuff is a bit of a ripoff of The Ramones, but there's some cracking tunes there, like this one...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84no_HITKFo

And thirdly, The Gaslight Anthem, sort of late 70's Springsteen but a bit harder...  the only band of the three I've seen live and they are bloody excellent...

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1lq40tR72Q

Guys, please turn me onto something good!  I'm dying to hear some great new bands!

 :P

I discovered these Finnish guys last year;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Von_Hertzen_Brothers
http://www.vonhertzenbrothers.com/
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=von+hertzen+brothers&sm=3

Turns out they've been around for a good few years now, but their 4th album in 2011, was the first to be released internationally, and they first toured abroad that year. Their 5th album, Nine Lives, came out in 2013, and for now, is the only one I've got, but I love it, and will check out their back catalogue before too long.

3 dutch bands that I really like and try to see a few times a year.
Dewolff pshycedelic bluesrock southern rock, young guys and highly talented and nice guys (always fun if a band says hello to you when you walk into the venue.)
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQD4rKxK2ak

Orgel vreten, 2 hammond organs screaming at eachother (one of the guys is the organ player from Dewolff), one hell of a bassplayer and drummer. They always play with a load of other musicians.

Birth of joy, dewolffs evil twin, an evening good for permant hearing damage

Well Ray with those 3 there you've pretty much spiked my guns on this one! I would chuck in Public Service Broadcasting as well. Inform Educate Entertain is a really good album. Especially this track:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7quFOoUT08c

Not sure how to describe the music - hybrid of all sorts of stuff really. I can't think of a similar sounding record which I guess at least makes it an interesting listen.

Ray, got to agree with you about Frank Turner. Saw him first a good while back on the beach in Scarborough and then four albums later in Barcelona a few weeks ago. I was a bit dubious at first, wondering if "making it big" had changed him for the worst. Man, was I wrong! One of the best performances of any one ever, and I've seen a lot of groups!!

Have you heard of these boys, Chewing on Tinfoil? Caught them at Rebellion a couple of years ago: http://youtu.be/L4BFlYO3QVA (http://youtu.be/L4BFlYO3QVA)

Oh the thing you said Ray reminds me about the Sabot; an American+Czech duo with only bass and drums. Very Progressive but rocky though. Here. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=zL4THpmzC-o) Very nice people and touring a lot. The bass player's amp is quite interesting because there's only one volume: it's always on 10!

I'll check the duo you put there.

You should also check out Wonk Unit, doubt that they will ever be massive, but deserve to be, as they are brilliant, funny and a great bunch of lads. Interestingly they also nutured Slaves in their very early days, as the Slaves boys were big Wonk fans and now are repaying the favour by getting Wonk Unit as support on several of their big shows .  This Band is not Really New but I have been going thru all their Releases From Finland Melodic Doom Metal  Band Insomnium. Their latest release is Shadows of the Dying Sun which came out in 2014. Their earliest music came out in 2006

I have to say that I was not a fan of doom metal (all these different sub catagories of Metal) but I have  to  say these guys can Rock their Last album has over 1 million views and listens on You Tube. 8)

Not so much any specific band but anything released by Fat Possum in Mississippi. I have never heard such raw, anarchic blues in my life. The stuff literally spits electricity. I revere the elders but now when I want the blues, I'll listen to anything on Fat Possum. It's a blues golden age and not too many have noticed yet.

There's a metal band called Diablo that I've heard only few times from radio. Well, yeah I know they're not so new band anymore but to me they are. Quite catchy, crunching riffs and I like their vocalist' sound... Nowadays there are thousands of, uhh well hundreds of big Finnish metal bands that are better known in other countries than in here. Well I'm not so much into metal than I use to write about those bands here. But there's some cool stuff out there yep.  :)

They hardly qualify as new but if you like psychedelic music I'd urge you to check out the Japanese band Ghost (same goes for the Boredoms but that's REALLY old). And if you want to hear demonically possessed music from America's deepest woods and bayous, then I recommend the band me and Lotus mentioned on another thread - Wovenhand. That is if you don't mind music you can both enjoy and get the creeps from. Again, not new (I'm sorry, Radiohead were probably the 'newest' band I listened to) but if you like straight up Stones-style rock n  roll with a lot of integrity and heart, you might like the Drive By Truckers.

Second The Drive By Truckers, similair in ways to NMA imo - not a bad album in 10 plus, a hard touring band, nucleus of the band stays the same, extremely loyal following, seen em 7/8 times & consistently one of the best live bands out there. Gotta love a band that doesn't do setlists.

I've only seen the Truckers once so far but they are definitely kindred spirits, as are the fans. At the end of the show Patterson Hood said "Thank you all for helping us feed our families" which I thought showed a heartfelt appreciation. It may read as corny here but it wasn't.  I was lucky enough to meet them before the show too and they were Southern gentlemen to the hilt. Love those guys. And you're right. Another 10 good albums and they'll be the only band I know that can compete with New Model Army in consistency. Which makes me wonder- is Justin Sullivan aware he's been in a band that's been around for about 30 years and hasn't made a single weak album ? I think that's unique in the history of rock music.

If Acid Mother's Temple fit the new category I like them a lot. The first time I heard them it was just a barrage of feedback and various other noises. Then somehow my perception of the world around me mysteriously altered and I tried them again and it all made perfect sense. These guys had somehow captured the majesty of the cosmos with sound. For all its surface squalling it actually had a structure and meaning I hadn't grasped at all the first time. Then, after yet another jarring perception shift I returned to what the Swans call "the cold light of boring reality" and tried AMT again. This time my opinion was a little more measured but I was still impressed at how wild and massive their sound is. In my experience, any band from Japan is worth listening to. Same used to go for New Zealand for some reason. They had an epidemic of great bands way, way back in the 90s.

Bang on mate, Patterson is an absolute gent, very grateful for the life he leads & doing something he truly loves doing, he's a kind soul, met him briefly once also. His dad David Hood from Muscle Shoals Rythm Section is in current incarnation of The Waterboys, strange but true.

The Royal Blood sounds great. Want's to hear it more...
I reallyl love them - I often listen to the British Forces Station here in Germany and they sometimes play their songs - for the first time in forever I found myself immediately hooked and wanting the CD. I was so thrilled when they added a gig in Cologne this summer - what a show!!!!

Friends of mine suggested I check out a band called "Death From Above 1979" - also just 2 guys with a bass and drums. They are a Canadian band and not exactly new but my friends said they liked them even better than Royal Blood.

I did get their CD "You're aWoman, I'm a Machine", as recommended, but have to say that I haven't been able to really get into them.

If you'd like to check them out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bOg3aSRexo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bOg3aSRexo)

I'm absolutely into this young Belgian band Black Tolex. They released their first album Cayo nearly a year ago. Also they were chosen by Therapy? to support them on their last Belgian minitour. Yesterday I went to Tolex' provisional last gig in a little venue, man it was blasting! American bluesrock band Simo played their support, also superb music. I think Black Tolex has an enormous potential so I wouldn't be surprised they will become a really big band in the future. They're still very young, I guess around 20 years average. I talked to their guitarplayer and he said they are taking a break now for half a year to write new material...

Here's the second song (Killer Rail) on their album https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3ErKSYuOck

And this is Simo with an amazing version of Joe Cocker's A Little Help From My Friends or was it the Beatles? ;)

Really like Sleaford Mods, must get into them some more.  Very reminiscent of The Streets.  Great lyrics.

Think I've posted this before, but here's Tiswas...

Loving the fact that a couple of musicians in their mid-30s can become so trendy!

i lived in notts for 6 years till the end of 2015 and only heard them/of them the other day. they're really quite a big cult band as well, i feel a bit robbed at missing out. theyre playing Rock City (notts) in november.
