I would like to know the font used on most of the releases. I've taken a look around the web, and can't recommend anything that pops up after 'Stencil' or 'Cargo'.
-
I don't think it's a commercially available font. I think it's taken from Justins own handwriting. If you look closely, it kinda looks like personal handwriting, but none of the letters join up, as it would do if you were writing by hand. I would imagine that Mr Sullivans writing was scanned, then a new font created. A nice personal touch, but it saves him having to rewrite everything for album sleevenotes in every single territory / language...
I may be completely wrong about this, just a theory, please correct me if anyone knows any better...
-
I also think it's his handwriting, which is good, as he seems to have taken the time to write down the full lyrics (in some cases) and liner notes. Let it be personal.
-
I refer specifically to the band's name: NEW MODEL ARMY - which is hand drawn yes, but based on the stencil used to spray onto freight.
The hand written lyrics and liner notes are indeed most welcome, but not the subject of my inquiry.
-
I always thought it was based on U.S. Army property marking - paint through stencil, such as this --

Otherwise, you will need to ask Joolz herself.

I remember there was an interview with Joolz, when there was the changing of the font, the name of the old and the reason for the change ???
CanĀ“t find the download on this pc hdd :(

That's quite close - the first I've seen with the correct 'M' - but the 'E' is wrong. Thanks.
I was at an airport freight terminal years ago, and saw them using similar stencils with spray-paint on large wooden crates destined for faraway places. You could be completely correct.

Stencil style is a classic way to make logos. Many of you might remember how punks use to copy band names with similar logos from album covers on to their jackets. Or maybe some of you have done own t-shirts with your own pictures. It's practical to copy a name to a plastic film by drawing and then cut the lines. Well, I guess it's not needed to explain this to most of you, but if you check the link Shush put above you can see how the lines do not meet but leave a thin line inbetween. That's because otherwise the film doesn't maintain its body while spraying or pressing the color.
I think it's good that NMA took it as their logo so long time ago before others.

Yeah, but it may be possible depending on how long the 3 lines in 'E' are - the shorter they are, then they may keep the film body straight while spraying. :)

Sorry mate, didn't understand your original post.
Best of luck finding what you're looking for!

I agree its close, not exact. I suppose its whether Joolz found a font, or maybe stencil and used it, or saw a style, liked it and based the lettering on it, in which case, I imagine "artists licence" will change the exact font slightly.
Again, I suppose the only way you will ever know is if you ask Joolz.

I haven't specifically checked but just assumed it was a stencil from a kids pencil case set. You know, the ones you used to get way back when with protractor, compass etc.

NEW MODEL ARMY classic logo is written using a font called "Know Your Product" I'm led to believe...
-
This is very close - thanks for the lead.
It's not exactly right though, the M is not correct.

You're all wrong. It's a stencil I made up. Justin wrote out by hand most of the album lyric sheets as he has lovely handwriting. If you have any queries regarding NMA's artwork that you want genuine answers for feel free to ask me. Joolz.

It never occurred to me to ask directly. :-[ (Slaps forehead)
My reason for asking is so that I could make custom artwork for my iTunes.

Is it quite rare in the music industry for the same artist to have done all the artwork for a band for a period of over 30 years ?
Personally I think its a great part of NMA tradition, and part of the bands long history. Some may dismiss history as "sentimental", but I think its important and underpins who we are.
I love the artwork you do for NMA. Contrary to what some may think, I am happy as an NMA fan to have it in my house, in my wardrobe and under my skin ;)
