I don't get it but i guess it's cultural. I used to play soccer (American equivalent of European football) as a kid and enjoyed it. however, never got the appeal of watching athletic events. I do get that it's fun to play though and brings people together. but so does music and art.

Putting all the other issues aside and concentrating on the football.
Yes very excited about world cup kinda doesn't feel the same this time though maybe that is just me.
On the two posts so far yes the Dutch definitely deserve a World cup can't quite see them doing this time but knows.
Football is very much a tribal thing that brings people together from the same area to support their team.
Personally i always tend to support the Germans and Brazil come world cup time,maybe next time Scotland lol.
On last night's game. It certainly wasn't the greatest game ever, I felt Brazil were a bit lucky and the score line flattered them, the referee certainly didn't have the best game and the Croatian keeper was poor.

Think you state the problem there yourself old chap. People don't want to fly the flag any other time in England for fear of being called nationalistic or racist, which is crazy. Go to the States, the flag is everywhere, many continental counties also.
Personally, I do not attach much national, or international importance to the World Cup. It is not a competition to find out which is the best country on Earth. If it were, then Brazil would be the top of the pile through overall success - yet even as this tournament is on, people riot in the streets against the mass inequality in the country which has terrible poverty, so this cannot be the case.
Its just football. If you dunna like footy, don't watch it. Personally, I am not a football fan, but do enjoy the World Cup nd the Euro Cup. Otherwise, I do not have a team.

I absolutely despise the way companies flog their wares on the back of the world cup by getting football related themes into advertising. It cheapens the whole thing.
On another note, I tried to get my eldest who has no interest in football to pick the score for Spain v Holland. He went for 2-1. Ive since pointed out to him there is a very good chance he may be outwitted by an octopus given the same task ;D

Spain vs. Holland and a score 2-1 would have been quite realistic estimation. But oh man, what an unbelievable game and result was it yesterday! In all measures Spain very good, but now Dutch just could score in at a crucial time. (Just wondering if some might had a lottery about the score, the multiplier may have been quite interesting.) ::)

And how come (as someone else noted) it seems to be a peculiarly English thing? Not even British just English - there's a dissertation in that somewhere for a Culture student.
Still as long as the game tonight is a good one and we actually play some decent football it don't really matter for now. I reckon we'll get a 1-1.

Personally, I'm very happy people only fly flags at big sporting events over here, the US ARE a very nationalistic country and nationalism is something I have little to no time for, and as such I'm very happy that (with few exceptions) on the whole in Europe we are not.
Relating to the world cup, as a football fan it doesn't excite me, I call it 'football for people who don't like football'; a big sponsor-dominated circus geared at making as much money as possible through merchandise, TV rights and all that and a chance for a lot of people who normally don't give a shit about football to fill the pubs and act like they're the biggest experts on the matter ever (while mostly proving they don't even know the basics of the game the minute they open their mouth).
Don't get me wrong, I'll watch the matches when I can (so far I've watched all 4 of them and rather unsurprisingly I've been quite impressed by Holland yesterday); but I don't really care who wins - in terms of excitement give me club football any day, that's what my passion and loyalty is reserved to

I dunno mate. I suppose the Spanish era has to end some time. World Champions dont get thumped 5-1, although granted its one game. Enjoyed the tournament so far. But I gotta say Italy marshalled us well and we seemed to play one pass too many.
As for the flag debate. Well I suppose you could argue that its the far left that took the flag from us by making it shameful and racist. The most heartening thing I saw was black, white and asian people involved in St Georges day parade.
I really wish we could celebrate our nationality like other countries do without it being made jingoistic and partisan. And its only really in the last 20 years or so we've moved away from Britishness. Wales and Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own history,seperate to ours, albeit we are neighbours with intertwined pasts I dont buy Great Britain tbh. Anyhoo. Ill get off me soap box. :)

hodgson has to man. he has one of the best strikers and number 10s in the English game and he sticks him out on the left. and gerrard really isn't up to it. although there were some very positive signs all round. hope England get going.

The problem is that Rooney hasnt really shone in an England shirt for years. Undoubtedly he's talented and some of the cross field passes he played were inch perfect. BUT.....im not entirely convinced he can cut it anymore at this level and score the goals we need from him.. Would seriously love to be proved wrong

not sure what can done. hes obviously frustrated with repeatedly being asked todo a job for the team. hodgson needs to grow a pair nd stick rooney upfront as a lone striker and sterling playing off him. milner of the right wing and lallana on the left and use sturridge to shake it up after an hour.
also, Wilshire needs to start or he needs to put jones in midfield alongside gerrard so he can take the pressure off gerrard to defend and mark and give him freedom to spread the ball around.
its a real dilemma. Uruguay v England will be immensely tense. just hope they have enough and Luis doesn't spoil the party........

Agreed with the Rooney thing. Heno, sorry but your Man Utd tinted glasses have not enabled you to see that not only has he not performed in World cups ever, but he is a busted flush. Give Sturridge, Barclay, Sterling etc their heads and lets see where we get to!

I hear ya. they are tinted. but when I look back to when rooney played best he was in the striker role. no one plays him there any more. they say its because he doesn't see enough of the ball and gets frustrated. so put out a side with the players you mention and put him up top on his own. I think..... :-\

Rooney - can he really do it? Nah, don't think so how many times we gonna let him try ? I had no expectations going into this world cup just wanted us to have a go and we do that with the younger lads otherwise it's the same old same old. There were more chances in the that first 45 mins than the whole of South Africa. Personally I'd rather we played like that and lost all 3 matches than sit through some stodgy game. In any case it makes for a brilliant learning curve to go into the next Euro's.

Have to say, Uruguay are one of my new faves. Their way to play is refreshing and exciting; especially Forlan's. But a situation about Uruguay and England challenging each other in footy is a bit difficult to swallow because I'd like to be on behalf of both sides.
Today we saw how damn good and "dangerous" Müller (Germans) can be. They defeated my all time faves Portugal.

Guess I gave the Spanish too much credit after the Netherlands game...................bye ;D
The Dutch seem to be getting a bit of stick for not being as blinding as in the Spain match but I think that's unfair on Australia who played really well and as for the Cahill goal - awesome, far and away the best of the tournament so far and wouldn't surprise me if it still was once the Cup is over.
Chile were really good and could go a long way, Belgium clawed their way back after a wobbly start and I still think they could be there or thereabouts at the end - after all a country that can brew beer like they can must have something a bit special in the genes!
So in an hour and a half it's England - v - Uruguay and it's a close call, I'm not familiar with many of their team but Suarez can't be fully fit surely, but Forlan probably still has a point to make to the UK. Their defence undoubtedly did look a bit iffy against Costa Rica so if we can frustrate their attack, put pressure on the defence and play like we did at times against Italy we could be ok, who knows? As long as we keep on the way we started it'll be a good game - note to self: go get some beer!!!!!!!

Realistically I dont think anyone thought we were good enough to make any impact but its still gutting. Defence really isnt good enough and while there were flashes of good football its not consistant enough and I cant see any truly world class players that can make a difference. I'll be 48 by the time the next one comes around. Scary.

Bit Harsh Heno - think Hodgson did get rid of as many old guard as he could, not sure any other manager could have done much more with players at his disposal - at least we didn't take the likes of Carroll et al as we have done before. You have a point with the subs tho' I'm with you on giving Lampard a crack. don't suppose he'll get another cap now.
Never know we may get a good result against Costa Rica and at least come back with a little bit of pride...maybe.

i'm not being harsh. hodgson has had a go and come up short. not by much. if anything just lacking a world class striker. suarez was the only difference. although making gerrard captain and sticking with him after a terrible end to the season was a mistake

Agree with that. We here had had some tournaments where we felt badly done by, and we are famous for losing penalty shootouts, 1990, 1996, 1998 spring to mind, but the Dutch have suffered similar, and lets face it, there can be nothing worse than losing a World Cup final with the usual questionable referring.
With England, heard a good comment today, four years ago, we wished the England team was a good as the Spanish team, well in this World Cup, we are :D

Read a piece on The Guardian earlier which had a statistic that said something like the premier league rakes in 1.3 billion while youngsters make do with crappy underfunded council pitches - that may explain quite a bit about why we come up short all the time. Also read that about 25% of premier league players are eligible for the English team again might explain a lot. Anyone know how this compares with other leagues around the world? As an adjunct to that we have no players in our team who play in a league outside England, that might say something too.
I'm with the Germans now purely because I've always loved going there and with a surname like mine it's only fitting!
Would love to see a country who's never won it or even been close take the trophy.

The problem lies with the premiership fans and chairman demanding success with British youth not being given a fair chance there is far too much money in game and teams can't risk playing younger players.
Lack of decent pitches and coaches is always going to be a major factor can't help but thinking that kids have too many distractions with xboxs play stations etc

Suarez - what can you say? 3rd time he's done it unfortunately there must be some fundamental character flaw in there somewhere. Doesn't matter how good he is he has to banned for a long time.
England - at least we got a point. Hopefully it lays the foundations for moving on and up other than that I think we pretty much ended up where we should be, at least we're in good company with Spain & Italy.

and my heart now goes out to suarez. he has been failed by the system and probably the terrible view that people have with regard to mental health issues. apparently he spent all last season after his return with the support of a psychiatrist. and it worked. he was in control all season. not sure if the same support was afforded him from the national team or did they even bring in the same support. sad. sad. sad.

If someone has repeated compulsions to bite another human being then something is obviously going on. He did get professional help after the last incident but it seems that whatever is going on must be a bit more deep-rooted. If I did that once walking down the street then I'd get nicked and quite rightly so. Shame, he will be remembered for being an animal rather than the brilliant footballer he undoubtedly is.

Watching the Greece -Costa Rica match last night, the amount of sweat pouring from both teams. Frightening exerion in the heat. No wonder theyre all knackered.

it certainly is draining for them. But I don't buy to much that its a competitive advantage for some teams. A lot of them play in Europe and would not be used to the temps for some time. Nor would their training regimes consider it too much. I do like the idea of the water breaks. Apparently they can lose up to 4 litres of fluid in a match. Could do with a bit of that myself.

I've only been to Germany once, I was in Koln and Bonn, had a fantastic time, beautiful buildings and lovely people.
Hopefully go back there one day.

Ive thoroughly enjoyed this tournament despite Englands short comings. Its been refreshing to have a break from the English greedy league.

Was a little disappointed with the Dutch, didn't really see the commitment that got them to the semis which they showed in the previous matches.
As soon as it went to pennys, you just knew they are not going to go through. Their record in shoot outs is as bad as Englands in recent tournaments. You have to imagine, it gets routed in the National frame of mind - I'm Dutch, I'm English, I cannot score in a shoot-out ::)
