... and, please, no 'jokes' about how you like 'iron' more than 'copper' or some such bullshit... ::)
I was watching Metallica at Glastonbury on TV last night and I was wondering how you lot thought about the musical genre that was and is called 'heavy metal'...
For me... I was about 9 years old when the late 70's movement called the NWOBHM happened... Iron Maiden, Rainbow, Motorhead, The Scorpions, Judas Priest, Diamond Head, etc..
Loved those bands ( had those two Axe Attack albums...)
During the 80's, I drifted away from the metal scene but in the 90's, I fell in with some great metal heads (still some of the best friends I ever had) and subsequently got into bands like Paradise Lost, Sepultura, Megadeth, Slayer, Fear Factory, White Zombie, Machine Head, Type O Negative, Anthrax and, best of all, the magnificent Pantera...
So, do any of you lot like Metal?
:o
-
God yeah. Started late and found Lizzy in the 80s. Listened to Anthrax, Metallica, Slayer amongst others. Everyone else I knew liked Rick bloody Astley. Then veered towards Suicidal Tendencies, New York Hardcore (more punky I guess)., Manowar, RATM, Bizkit, Linkin Park Those were the main bands. Not to keen on much from the mid 2000's. Seems too many genres that are virtually the same. More recently Amon Amarth
-
Liked bands like KISS and AC/DC in grade/high school, but could never get into Maiden or Slayer. Not sure why, but think it was the long guitar solos. Liked the odd Metallica and Black Sabbath tune, but couldn't listen to an entire side of an album from either band. Still like KISS and AC/DC.
Absolutely hate the bands where the lead singer tries to sing really high, then melodic, and then growling/screaming. HATE that crap.

How could I forget ACDC. Huuuuuuge fan of their 70's stuff and some of the later songs.
-
i've a fair appreciation of this stuff. mate of mine is big into it. from the allman brothers to ac/dc, rose tattoo, lynyrd skynyrd and all that stuff. i love pink floyd and led zeppillin and some early metalica and gnr.
but it down to friends interest, not my own
-
Was never a metal fan growing was always a punk then got into the alternative 80s scene, meteors, cramps ,sisters, cult, pogues etc etc and of course the mighty nma
The first real metal stuff i liked were the amebix and Metallica (master of puppets, black album)
The only two metal bands that am really into are Rammstein and tool.l do love the debut ratm lp though i don't really class this as metal and i wouldn't class the amebix as metal either. I do listen to planet rock at work and do enjoy most of the stuff they play but haven't rushed out to buy it.l think stuff like ac/dc motorhead maiden Sabbath have some excellent tunes
-
Swing over to All that is heavy (.com) and start working through the alphabet. They focus on lesser known/underground stuff as well as obscure oldies. I've been a big fan of Skeletonwitch and Black Pyramid lately but the groove end is covered nicely as well. Lots of Kyuss influenced bands if that's your bag.
-
Or if you'd like a more direct list of the good stuff on my shelf...there's way more but here's a start.
Atomic Bitchwax, Bad wizard, Bison, Black angels, Barn Burner, Cancer bats, Clutch, Coliseum, Company band
Dead meadow, Doomriders, Earthless, Electric Wizard, Entombed, Ghost, Hermano, High on Fire, Mastodon, quest for fire, Red fang, the Sword, Turbonegro, Zebulon, Zeke.
Sorry for getting all listy- I just love it when I get good suggestions.
Metal is kinda like Science Fiction, you have to wade through a lot of crap to find the gems.
-
I never did care for it much. Though I am not close-minded to the idea of any genre and some metal artists are good. However most That i have heard, I don't care for.
-
Can only see Cradle of Filth I d see and maybe some Paradise Lost. But OMG The Neph. Not since 1989 at The Hummingbird in Brum :-)
-
Yay, some good feedback there!
I have to say that I need some input in the whole metal thing nowadays. Kerrang used to be a fine indicator of what was going on, but nowadays..?
My fave metal bands nowadays are Rammstein, Paradise Lost and Lacuna Coil. All of whom have been going since the 90's and who I'm familiar with live. Luckyjack, the only band you mentioned that I know are Entombed (saw them supporting someone back in the day, think it was Type O, but I'm not sure..) but you've given me many names to look into, thanks!
I might be getting on a bit nowadays, age-wise, but I still love the sound of a VERY loud guitar!!!
;D
-
Yep, the whole NWOBHM thing was going on just as I was getting into music. Tommy Vance's Friday Rock Show on Radio 1 was like my audio bible ! From that I learnt to appreciate a lot of the older, classic rock and heavy rock that I was too young to remember at the time, such as Zep, Purple, Hendrix, Sabbath and much, much more of course. Tommy was great because he played just whatever he felt like, so you got lots of new stuff and older stuff too. Ah, I miss those days !
-
I used to love the Friday Rock Show. Forgot about it too. First heard Phantom of the Opera by Maiden on it :)
-
My issue with Metal was when so many of the bands suddenly had vocalists that were screaching away in high voices and dressing like extras in a Monty Python middles ages comedy. I loved a lot of the "hard rock" of the late 60's and early 70's but lost interest quickly. I love Sabbath and used to listen to groups like atomic rooster, The Move(anyone ever listen to "looking in"?), mid period Groundhogs, Uriah Heep,Mountain, and other loud blues based rock groups.
Punk made rock interesting again for a while and I still listen to a lot of the groups from the 67-77 period. I did see Michael Schenker and Uli Jon Roth a few years back and love dtheir live shows. But they really could have fit in with some of the late 60's hard rock bands.
Now when I want volume I listen to KMFDM, the best unknown band around. While labelled "industrial", they manage to combine Metal, electronic, and techno in a fascinating way.
-
Check out Volbeat if you havent heard em. Danish band. Bit of allsorts going on. Pretty good
-
You Know Before it was called Heavy Metal it was Known as Hard Rock so Bands like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, MC5, Iggy & The Stooges, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Mountain, Rainbow were the bands that would be considered Heavy Metal back in the Day. and Yes I loved those bands . Now that you have many sub groups that go from Speed metal, Black Metal, Death Metal etc there are a lot more bands that fit into these sub groups. As for me Yeah I like some of the Metal bands as a Bass Player I like to hear and copy some of the bass parts of some of the bands. I listen to Maiden and Fear Factory, Motorhead,Metallica and a few others. 8)
-
Well said - Hard Rock and Heavy Metal isn`t Metal yet, Volbeat for me is Hard Rock, Nightwish is new kind of Metal
I love the old ones, Volbeat is ok and sometimes I play Nightwish, Rammstein or some of the bands now labeled as ??? kind of metal
:)
-
Just been listening to a bit of Machine Head... well worth a listen, ******* awesome band.
Check out 'The Blackening', 'Unto The Locust' and 'Burn My Eyes'... then the rest...
-

Mmm, I've heard a few of their songs on the radio, but I struggle with the fact that their vocalist seems to have styled his delivery on James Hetfieldisms. It works with James, but sounds a bit too derivative with Volbeat for me. Still, I believe they're very popular.
-
Not a huge machine head fan but Halo is a awesome song

Interesting. I hadnt really looked at it that way. Id just assumed that it was as a result of him being Danish. I can hear the similarities and I know they draw on a lot of influences. Only really just found them out. Cant say I like it all but some of its really good. Not that keen on Hetfields ah's at the end of wordsah lol
-
Not that keen on Hetfields ah's at the end of wordsah lol
That's exactly what I was driving at ! ;D I don't mind it with James as he's always done it, but with Volbeat, it sounds like their singer is trying to copy James, and does it just a bit too much for my liking ! Unfortunately my head won't let me get past that and it puts me off. I do find that sometimes - just one little thing can put me off what is otherwise a great band !
-
I know exactly what you mean!! Happens with songs too. Just a vocal sound or instrument that isnt quite right will put me off something to the point it irritates me lol
-
I kinda fell outta love with metal in my late teens, in the last 10 years tho it probably been the mainstay of my listening ( with the exception of NMA of course)
Airbourne, Maiden, Metallica , Suidakra, Machine Head - Trivium have become a personal Fave. I have also really got into Delain, Nightwish , Within Temptation(who I was fortunate enough to see live recently with Delain)
-
I was a big fan of Metal in my teenage years, my favourite bands were Suicidal Tendencies, Infectious Grooves, Danzig, Jane's addiction...now i'm more a rock/blues/soundtracks fan but i like listening from time to time albums of Deep Purple, The Cult, Suicidal Tendencies, Jane's addiction, AC/DC, etc
Thin Lizzy is my favourite "metal" band i think.
-
I'm a bit late to the party here but yeah I used to love that metal when I was a kid - I left it for years and then rediscovered it a good five or so years ago - I was suprised at how some of the stuff I'd written off as neanderthal kid music is really very good stuff - Judas Priest and Scorpions and the pre Joe Lynne Turner Rainbow stuff, Diamond Head, Tank, I even listen to those early Whitesnake albums these days - I like 'em more now than I did then. All good stuff...There's some stuff that I can't listen to since I quit amphetamines - Hanoi Rocks and Aerosmith and others - I loved 'em in the last few years of heavy phet use but they don't go with the mood of today - The ones that worked with acid still work for me today but not the 'phet stuff - still can't bring myself to part with the records though.
-
Love it. Love it, love it, love it.
Metal has become such a massive genre with so many sub-genres that I'm sure you could find quite a few bands that most "non-metal" fans would absolutely love.
I grew up with metal. That's where my love for music first began so it'll always be something I take with me. I'm not listening to it as much these days though. Part of the problem with so many sub-genres in metal is that there are simply too many bands today. Too many average bands that are doing nothing original makes it hard to find the real gems. So I usually tend to mostly listen to the old favorites.
-
OK, plenty of people like metal here... let's post some videos! They might be scary, funny, stupid, whatever... just as long as you like them...
Here's Rammstein, 'Sonne'...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIBeYoP9Wi0
(I would have posted the uncut version of PUSSY, but I suspect that it might have been moderated right the hell out of here in two seconds flat ;) )
-
Rammstein are a awesome band definitely my favourite metal band even if I don't know any German
Once you have watched the video for sonne you should definitely check out 'Links'
-

Rammstein have never done a bad video, get thee onto Youtube and check them all out... you might have to go 'elsewhere' for the uncut PUSSY video but it's worth it, very funny...
I don't speak any German either... a friend of mine who speaks the language translated a few tracks for me... I was a bit disappointed how simplistic the lyrics were... no matter. If you ever get a chance to see them live, do so, one of the best live bands I've ever seen, spectacular...
-
Herzeleid is a cracking site for translating Rammstein's songs. Mutter was the defining album for them I think. Not that keen on the stuff before it although Du Hast is a great song.

Ok i promise to listen to it later
Thanks

Cut my musical teeth on metal in the early 1990's, and while I now have a very wide and varied taste, sooner or later metal rears its' head again.
My favourite metal bands are, according to my iTunes:
Alabama Thunderpussy
Amen
Anathema
Buck Satan And The 666 Shooters
Cradle of Filth (well, up to and including Midian)
Down
Geisha
Guns 'N' Roses
Hermano
Iron Maiden
Kyuss
Machine Head
Marilyn Manson
Mastodon
Metallica (Excepting the Black album, Load, Reload and St. Anger)
Ministry
Monster Magnet
My Dying Bride
Nailbomb
Nine Inch Nails
Opeth
Orange Goblin
Pantera
A Perfect Circle
Rage Against The Machine
Raging Speedhorn
Sepultura
Slayer
System Of A Down
Therapy?
Tool
Type O Negative
Uncle Acid And The Deadbeats
Viking Skull
White Zombie
Now I know that not all of these are strictly classed as metal, but what is metal really? Heavy, intense, aggressive... I don't know, but I love the above bands and plenty more like them.
-
Yes indeed. Although I've been to punk, industrial and experimental stuff since start of 90's, metal influences have always been bubbling under with me. Some all time fave bands of mine include:
Acrophet
Mekong Delta
Coroner
Voivod
WatchTower
Slayer
Motorhead
Morbid Angel
Queensryche
Death
Venom
Entombed
Obituary
Pestilence
Accüsed
Deep Purple
Loudness
Chastain
Metal Church
Razor
Yet there are hundreds of amazing punk/hc/crust/grind bands that should get their own topic, but that's another story and genre. ;)
BTW, I saw Lotus mentioned Nightwish there. They are Finnish and one of the bands known to get a wide popularity here and everywhere. There have always been quite a lot of such bands playing in a similar style here. I'd see it so that the "heroic" power metal genre had a lot of success here in northern Europe in 80's and 90's. It was actually due to Yngvie Malmsteen's Rising Force, Manowar, Pantera, Dream Theater and such (role game background) music that created tens of bands that shared the style together. Most of the Finnish metal bands seem to get the biggest audiences in Germany and Greece nowadays :).

Feeling a bit nostalgic for the 90's metal scene so been listening to a bit of Type O Negative... cracking good metal band with a big hint of Goth... here's 'My Girlfriends Girlfriend', love this tune... if you like it, 'October Rust' is a terrific album...

Shit, sir, you think you know loud? I've seen the magnificent MOTORHEAD a couple of times... ******* hell, it's like standing in front of a jet engine!!! Been to hundreds of gigs but I've never heard anything like that... ;D
But if we're talking about Motorhead, here's one of their more recent tunes, I Know How To Die...

Seen Motörhead three times, and WASP once... And now a quick unbelievable quick quiz about WASP members: which country would you believe their legendary former guitarist Chris Holmes lives now?
A: Finland

Don't get me started on 'metal'. I'll be here all night.
Started off with Maiden, AC/DC. Went straight from that to:
Exodus

Vio-Lence
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZiuGmdpW4M
Gwar
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ud1DluFNCe0
Napalm Death, Obituary, Pestilence, Slayer, Entombed, Exhorder the list is endless.
I think it's in your blood after a while. Only metalheads kinda understand.
-
Thought I'd reactivate the METAL thread...
This is a brilliant song from the new Slipknot album, 'Goodbye', dedicated to their departed member Paul Grey...

Machine Head are, IMO, the best metal band in the world nowadays... their new album 'Bloodstone And Diamonds' is amazing... so pissed off that I can't make their Nottingham Rock City gig in a couple of weeks... here's a stream of the whole album if you're tempted...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJKReRPG5tM

Saw Machine Head at Reading once.................. I think ::) ;D
Are Pennywise metal? Saw them recently having never heard them or even of them - they were excellent
-
I don't really know the stuff pennywise do but I always thought that they were a punk band.
-
Pennywise were a pretty enjoyable band, rather forgotten nowadays...sort of halfway between metal and pop-punk... this is a pretty good example of what they were all about...

I love metal. My first metal album was Sabbath's "We Sold Our Souls for Rock & Roll" and I was lucky enough to be there for the birth of thrash, death and everything else. What an amazing time to be a music fan, to be able to buy...on the day of their release... so many albums that are considered to be the best metal albums of all-time. That's pretty cool.
I'm still into it now but I haven't been keeping up with the scene as much as I'd like to. There are simply too many bands and sitting through 900 bands to find the one or two that catch your ear is too much work.
-
Bumped this up! :)
I've seen my music hobby has lead me to buy used albums and hard to find stuff. Mostly stuff that I still can recognise from my teen years. ;D
Really, I think it's worth to that! I've realised that many albums that I used to see in 2. hand record shops are not reachable anymore. Haven't been in a long time (30 years?) until now.
-
Looking forward to the new tool cd , if it ever happens there definitely one of the best bands around
-
Apparently it is definately coming out in 2018... mind you, they did say that about 2017...
A band who I need to investigate further... always liked what I heard but never really immersed myself in them, if you know what I mean.
-
Imo tool are fckin awesome, they have some of the best and most respected musicians in industry. There live shows , DVDs and art are also excellent. Although nothing like nma I'm gonna quote justin on nma " a band for intelligent people who have been in dark places "
-
I could write a hundred bands I like here but these days I'm revisiting Judas Priest Painkiller album.I have it since the day it's released and in my opinion it's really a killer.Real art and a masterpiece. Also Suicidal Tendencies is still on my playlist since 90's.

Damn. Just checked out Lateralus. I might have heard it once or twice 'back then' but it blew me away. Cheers, mate, now off to investigate the rest of their stuff...

My recent likes include some old bands that I've realised later on how great they are/were. Some of them are:
Hexenhaus
Cynic
Pestilence
Bands that I've always been into but until now I've seen they are unbelievably great and I have to buy all their albums are Coroner and Mekong Delta. Coroner's last studio album "Grin" was released in 1993. Now after all these years they're back again, have a working management team behind and making a new album.
Here is a Youtube link to Coroner's Grin album. Wanna give it a try? :) https://youtu.be/V52WQN2wKuo

Yeah, exactly! They started again in 2011 with gigs and released a triple DVD + CD set called "Autopsy" in 2016.
I think they're somewhat of a special band as they've been an influence behind the scenes to so many big bands like Celtic Frost, Sepultura, Opeth, Kreator etc. I'm also waiting with a vast excitement what kind of lyrics they'll write for the new album about today's world. I think they've had a kind of "intellectual" reputation.
Here's their new site: https://www.coroner-reunion.com/
Playing in Greece next Summer at Over the wall fest: https://www.facebook.com/overthewallfestival

got into HM when I was 13. then punk hard core, new wave dark goth electro, reggae. all the good stuff. music according to the mood of the moment that is the magic of being sensitive and knowing lots of good music. but sure metal was my first passion and I still have metal on tapes, cds and vynils.

Here's a Youtube post called '10 Metal Bands That Have Never Made A Bad Album...'
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I67u-h1D81o
The number one band on this list is a band called Death. I have never heard anything by them. But I don't want to be scrabbling around on Youtube for rare or insignificant stuff, I want to go right in with their best stuff, like a newbie checking out Metallica and going straight to 'Master Of Puppets!
Any Death fans out there?

Yes sir,I used to listen their "Spiritual Healing" album when I was a kid.It was a good album but of course I can't know if you like it or not.I don't listen death metal anymore just some time to time you tubing some Napalm Death stuff still I like. After Chuck Schuldiner's death they split I guess.

Does Catherine Wheel's Happy Days count as Metal? They are going to re-issue the vinyl for record store day. I've got the clear vinyl from the original release, but it's one of my least favorite CW albums.

I'd say it's more 'uk-indie' despite a few tracks having some quite loud guitar.
Love Catherine Wheel, though! My favourite albums, ranked...
1 - Ferment
2 - Adam And Eve
3 - Chrome
4 - Happy Days
5 - Wishville
-
For me - but they're all damn fine records - and I still say Happy Days gets close to metal:
Chrome
Adam & Eve
Ferment
Wishville
Happy Days
-
Each to their own, buddy. Still love this band... blimey, every other band from the 90's is reforming, why not Catherine Wheel? >:(
-
Right this is a long shot stab in the dark post. Their was a uk metal band, 90's or early 2000's I think that sampled Zulu on the album. Not a great album but couple of decent songs.....anyone any ideas. Cant remember for the life of me!!

Me, here...
They were one among the first of 5 or so bands that were molding thrash style to death metal. If not predecessors, but very original and they inspired tens to hundreds of new bands who started during late 80's and early 90's with the first and/or second wave of classic death metal.
But Death showed also increasing interest in a then less liked style of progressive death metal and they went fairly psychedelic quite soon. Others who also joined the style were Pestilence and Suffocation, for some to mention. (But I think the prog death thing is actually great after all.) It tells a lot about how Death changed if you think their guitarist Paul Masvidal formed also a band called Cynic which is progressive as hell and use vocoders with vocals, have synthesizers and complicated riffs, timing etc. (Recommended to check out.)
As BER said, it's so pity and sad what happened to Chuck Schuldiner. There was a benefit tour to fund for expensive and difficult surgery to fight the cancer that Schuldiner (and Chuck Billy from Testament) had. Chuck Billy survived the operation though.
My fave album from Death is their first the Scream Bloody Gore, second album Leprosy, and probably the Exorcist's instrumental version (a Possessed cover) that was rather more their progressive era from the album Individual Thought Patterns : https://youtu.be/FxDT3pRzou4

I second that. There has been talk of a reunion tour, but I don't any of them are interested in making new music. And they just reissued their LPs, so maybe.
-

I'm presuming you mean the film Zulu, soundtrack by John Barry? Just did some in-depth and hugely exhaustive research (OK, a bit of Google-ing) and although this fine composer has been sampled many times I can't find any band that matches your description. If you can remember a line from the song, try doing a search on that? You'd be amazed how many long forgotten songs you can find by just knowing a few lyrics...
-
Ha mate I tried that too. It was actually the Zulu war songs they had as an intro and outro to the album. Bloody annoying. Been trying to find them again for ours. Im sure they came out roughly the time Paradise Lost did but *shrugs shoulders

Yea, it's still quite widely appreciated here. There are some scenes that get ahead, like power metal and black metal, but there have always been plenty of bands that are plain death and progressive bands. Some may have distinct features such as the Oulu city connection that have a hint of northern themes and sound and then there are bands that share a mythological base of Karelian tradition (which is an epic from 1900th century, a collection of oral poetry and tongue). There are also some festivals that are huge, Tuska and Sauna Open Air for example.
I like some of the long gone Finnish bands but not all the stuff. I've no interest in black metal. Although my background was in metal during the 80's when I was a kid, and early 90's, I moved into punk and hardcore.
However, I see many of the southern european and/or Mediterranean Sea countries bearing a similar trend. Lots of festivals, band t-shirts, die hard fans, and rock and metal clubs etc? :)

Edit: thank you for your nice words ;);)

A question on something I'm confused about: What defines a metal band? when does something become metal as opposed to hard rock say ???

An example of hard rock would be say AC/DC. More blues/ rock n roll origin. Metal would be more Sabbath and Maiden, classically based.
As a metalhead, there are a stupid amount of genres within heavier music.

Without having a clue lol . I would guess it's certain chord signatures n guitar pedal sounds . I guess it how they get pigeon holed as well. Why are bands like kyuss classed as stoner rock when they use a lot of Sabbath rifts n not stoner metal tho

Too many genres on the metal scene... it does get a bit confusing. Most people would regard Motorhead as a metal band whereas Lemmy refuted that, saying they were a rock and roll band...
There is no clear answer to that question. There are a ton of bands covered in Kerrang! (a supposed metal magazine) that I wouldn't regard as metal. But that's just my opinion. It's an ever evolving scene and one that refuses to die, no matter how many people say that 'rock is dead' (or, indeed, metal). The Prodigy get a lot of coverage on metal forums... now, much as I love them, I wouldn't regard them as a metal band in a million years! Likewise, stuff like Good Charlotte or Blink 182...
It's all confusing, I just go with what I like and what I don't... ;)
