Title: James
Post by: Anna Woman von NRW on September 28, 2014, 10:09:49 PM
Any love here for James?

Always loved this band. In hindsight it appears I learnt to dance from Tim Booth   :-[. Probably only seen them  live 4 or 5 times but I've been listening since late 80's. I think they're excellent.

Musically there may not be much similarity between them and NMA other than some of both bands output being lumped under what I call “Dance Rock”. Lyrically I think both writers come from different angles.

But I do think there is some spiritual common ground – both bands tap into something. Some common human feeling or emotional stream that's similar. ****, for once words don't come (put that in yer diaries  :D)  Hope you get something of what I'm trying to convey.

Anyway, these are my favourites, 2 Studio and 2 Live recordings.

Great band.
Have seen them many times over the years and at one point you couldn't go to any festival without them being there.
Haven't listened to them for years and years, so I'll have to dig them out now you've reminded me.
 :)

Quite like James but never seen them live - the overkill of 'sit down' has marred this song as at times when I hear I just switch it off despite it being a good song

will be catching them live this year as, shameless plug for a couple of my mates, Starsailor have reformed and will be supporting them on the winter tour:)

Good - fellow "Jamesters"  :)
Brilliant lyrics, brilliant music and dancing like a village idiot is encouraged - what's not to like?

Last time I saw them was when they played Beautiful Days. I've been digging around too and got this recent Scottish festival set:

the overkill of 'sit down' has marred this song as at times when I hear I just switch it off despite it being a good song

With you on that one. I suspect it's also a bit of a heavy (if lucrative) millstone round their necks.  It's a bit weird really because the song is pretty much a shout of solidarity to all the misfits, loners & excluded yet it became such a massive popular song to the "masses"   ??? Oh and good plug I remember the name Starsailor but no music - I'll youtube later.

The later stuff is better imho.

Yeah they're a bit like a fine Stilton that gets better with age. (note to self :must get some cheese)  :D

Bloody SUPERB band!

Yeah I did like them. Fred Astaire - Had totally forgotten that on. Nice call. Proper memory trip out to that one, wasn't being in love nice. I will post some more now  (1 older, I newer) and it turns out you were right - it usually is your fault  ;D

Oh and I think what I meant about the similarities between them and NMA is that both bands deal intelligently and skilfully with both sides of life, the good and bad but neither proscribe? Is that right?

"Sometimes" is my fave James track.

The line "when I look deep in your eyes I swear I can see your soul" is wonderful.

I will always be grateful to Tim Booth for enabling those of us who can't dance to get away with it.

Oh I really like that. Have completely forgotten about them. Saw them in the early 90s and always liked them but somehow lost interest. Thanks for sharing this. So what would be a good recent album to check out?

Saw 'em live a couple of years with Echo And The Bunnymen supporting... now THAT was an enjoyable evening...  ;)

Johnz, they split for a good few years before re-forming, so I count anything pre-split to be 'old' but if you've not been into them since the early 90's, I'd deffo check out LAID.  Probably my favourite.  PLEASED TO MEET YOU is also a cracker.

Post-split, I'd say HEY MA is one to go for.

Just found my copy of the mini-album 'The Night Before'... 30 minutes of true excellence.

It should be forcibly played to the idiots who fill stadiums to watch the f-awful Coldplay... their tiny minds would be truly blown.

Good tune and bodes well for a forthcoming album and tour.
