... as Roger Murtaugh once said..? ;)
And I don't mean too old for NMA... Mr Sullivan is quite a bit older than me and as long as he keeps playing, I'll keep showing up...
But the rest of it... I'm a seasoned gig-goer, its been my main social activity since the 90's and I've always been one to try and keep up with new bands and all of that good stuff...
Had the chance to go to a gig tonight, could have gotten the train straight from work, got in there and a train back home again. But.. I couldn't be arsed. Too tired and a bit aching. Likewise, a gig a week on Friday... an artist I love, but I'm thinking about the journey there and back and the expense and how much better my bed looks at the end of a hard week... :P
I don't know. My joints are aching, old injuries are reminding me of themselves all the time and, quite frankly, I'm feeling ten years older than my actual age...
I've always been a guy who acts younger than his age but, right now, I'm feeling it. And not liking it.
Any of you lot feeling the same way?
-
Thus is the ageing process. The voice that says its too much hassle go home and get to bed!!!
-
Yes.
I find buying tickets in advance helps.
Getting back from work in the wind and rain, or like last Friday when it had started to freeze, makes the hour drive or train journey plus the costs, seem not such a good idea when I haven't got a ticket.
Sitting in a (not very)warm house, with Helen, the cat and a glass of beer, was much more civilised.
Also often knowing the gig won't finish until gone eleven, even though doors are at half seven and there is only one support doesn't help. The last train will have gone, meaning I'll have to drive. Often not too much of a problem as the beer is usually over-priced and undrinkable. I must be one of the few people that like early finish gigs, so I can get home at a resonable hour.
-
Its extremely difficult to keep up with things. We all have our reasons be they financial, family pressure's or just can't be bothered. I'm happy with the early finish thing to as the last train home from Glasgow is just after 11pm.
Would say to M.R. at least you've been out and done it and still prepared to try. How many other people do you know about your age that are still doing the same things as yourself. Your not ready for your pipe and slippers yet

Love that message, Pol! Gotta say, I was in a bit of an odd mood last night when I posted the original message (OK, a few drinks might have had something to do with it... ;) )
You heading home right after the gig? That's a shame. If a pre-gig thing can be arranged, you up for that?
-
Rock and roll will keep you young!!
I think. I went to more concerts this year than I have in ages. And I often pay the price the next day after I get home at 1:00 in the morning and have to get up at 5:00am. But, you know, it's really worth it, because I really don't know what I would do without the occasional concert to go to. I really need that infusion of energy to offset the boredom of my job. And I'm learning seeing a gig sober isn't all that bad either! ;)
-
No my train outta Nottingham isn't till 10am Sunday morning.
Was just generalizing that when i normally go to gigs in Glasgow its good to get the last train home. I should be making a appearance at the after gig party. Might need a red bull or 3 as my first train on Saturday is at 7am to Glasgow then the 8am train from there changing at Warrington.
Yes a rock n roll life style definitely keeps you younger though

Totally agree, I am in a similar position, probably been to more gigs this year than ever, getting home at 1am and having to get up a few hours later is a pain but you're a long time dead, go for it now, while you still can.
-
I'll agree with that too. When you no longer want to go to gigs, it maybe time to accept you are middle aged :'(
-
I'm beyond middle aged but still fueled by music. As one of my favorite groups put it. "full speed , straight ahead, don't stop, you can sleep when you're dead"!
-
Yes.
But it's all lies - never too old ;)
-
Loving these messages! You're all right, we're NOT too old for this shit!!! :D
So tomorrow night, I'm gonna go at it like I was a teenager (even though I just threw out my dodgy ankle and now its twice the size it should be...)
See you at Rock City!
-
If anything, the opposite really.
Saw Anna Calvi recently and was delighted to find that some of the 'youngsters' are fantastic live and well worth the time and effort to see. Christ, she even stole the hearts of some apprehensive Morrissey fans in Dublin! Now that's an accomplishment in itself...

Know how you all feel. Went to a Bad Religion gig this summer in Barcelona. The place was absolutley packed and I was down in the mosh pit as usual. The temperature must have been well above the 40s. About three quaters of the way through the gig I had to drag myself to the side as I was about to pass out from heat exhaustion. After throwing up and dowsing myself with ice I was asked by a kindly soul of a similar age if I was OK. When I told him I'd been in the mosh pit, he just gave me a crazed look of despair and said I must be mad! I think he was right! Obviously I sat out the rest of the gig and when I got home I was able to ring out all my clothes as if they'd just come out of the washing machine.
The worst part was having to accept that I'm not in my twenties anymore and the old body just can't take the hammering it used to :'(
-
You know it's great to read your posts. I've been waiting what I will write here. I used to go to the gigs every now and then since when I was 28. And
then I met my lovely wife. I've been a crust punk nearly all my life before meeting her. And then we moved. I cut the cut the connections to the city life. We felt happy about the change.
Nowadays it's always nice to go to the gigs because it's quite rare when we'll do that. We are on our 40's now. I actually used to be harassed about things when I was younger. It's gone now.
It has been nice to come back to the NMA; that once shook my heart as a teenager. I've always loved them and now it seems "they" are bringing something back on us.
-
Today im feeling far too old for this shit. I maybe battered and bruised but im not ready to go down. Can't wait to get back home. I will still be back though. Nottingham was fantastic !
-
You and me both honey - it hurts today, my voice is just a croaky whisper and I bet it's a couple of days before the last ache fades away but more than worth it. Brilliant night ;D
-
For me it's a case of 'the good old days' When you could drop a tab and smoke a reefer in the gig and come home fine or not come home home at all and, well I don't do drugs now and now we can't smoke a cigarette in the venue, or even sneak a bottle of vodka in and so the bar costs a fortune and then I'm outside as soon as the pop hits are being played for a ciggie and I'd rather just sit at home and watch the thing with a bottle of whiskey and as much ciggie smoking as my ashtray can take...but my theme for tonight is ; (semi ******* colon ok) I missed a great gig last night - and it was for a very worthy family reason so that is ok - BUT! did any of you catch it on your phone? I want to watch that gig!
Ray - as it's you who put this thread alive and as there are very few folk I 'know' who like Fish as much as I do I want to say the first Fish solo gig I saw was his first tour - I was tripping and he had me and my bro in creases with his postures and mannerisms - we were killing ourselves laughing through the gig - it was so funny - now all these years later Fish is one of the few that I would still bother to go see - and that's because he's got a depth that hits in person and doesn't hit as well in studio or youtube.

Agreed, mate.. Fish is an act that is so much better live than on CD or whatever...
Damn, my low cash situation and the fact that I'm getting out of work so late next Friday put a bit of a block on going to see him... but now I'm rethinking the whole thing... I might make it, couldn't I? ???

Fish gig is on Friday? Your not a Catholic are you? We always had fish on Fridays...it was another one I misssed - he played Preston recently - I'm 44 and I'm just learning to drive. Got some money and bought a car and thought - ok- start of a new adventure - I can miss the Fish gig for a car - real granddadmobile a suziki wagon R - dead cheap and it's well I really like it - but I thought I'd have passed my test by the time of the Manchester gig - no driving licence yet and so I won't see this Feast tour...shame, this one looks lke his best yet - I really encourage you to go Ray - not only has he had huge troubles with the vocal chords which is re enforcing his threat to quit touring but what a fantastic LP Feast of Consequences is to be performing - it's gonna be his best tour yet....
-
K, saw him last year in Warrington, touring the 'Feast' album... he was bloody brilliant. Which is why I'm up for a repeat performance... he might have the pipes that he used to, but he makes up for it in sheer showmanship...
Oh sod it, it's not sold out, let's see if I can muster the energy... ;)
-
I pulled out a grey nose hair today. I think I'm too old for this shit.

You should see my eyebrows... ;D

I'm afraid I have nowadays similar looks as an owl has. My eyebrows and beard. Damn, when I was young...

Aw, it's our largest species of owls, the Northern Eagle-Owl. Quite rare to see and it's become suspicious about humans because Northern Eagle-owls are one of the predator birds that have suffered because of humans. They were seen as bringers of death in the past and their nests and clutch of eggs were destroyed. (There are numerous ancient beliefs about different animals in Finland that have had long traditions in pagan past).
Oh, just check this awesome video (http://yle.fi/elavaarkisto/artikkelit/cityhuuhkaja_kohtasi_kameran_37836.html#media=37839) from a roof of the main post centre in Helsinki. There's a security camera that filmed while this great and cute owl was having a lunch (eating a rabbit or something) at front of the camera at the roof - the owl saw, or heard the camera! It's until now that some of these larger predator animals have dared to come to the cities after other animals, and they've even had a nest somewhere at the roofs.
Ain't it cute and wonderful bird?

I must admit I find it hard to get myself to mid-week gigs, having to surface at 06.00am to go to work the day after, and I must confess that "Hotel" wins over "camping" at festivals if its possible, but I guess this is an age thing.
