Title: Anyone here ever been in a band?
Post by: Master Ray on December 15, 2014, 08:38:03 PM
Surprised this hasn't come up before...

I'm a music lover but not a musician.  tried to play the guitar and keyboards, but failed miserably.  Did a bit better on the bass, but never got much beyond basic punk stuff...

Yet I ended in a couple of local bands as, get this, a singer.   :o  Now, I can't sing worth shit, but it was rock/metal shouty stuff so I got away with it by being a bit loud and jumpy and antagonistic... no one who ever heard those tunes would accuse them of being classics...

But still, some of the best memories I ever had.  Some of the best friends, as well.  Those bands had a bit of a local following, probably in the absence of anything better, but still! And it was great when we played somewhere out of out comfort zone and a couple of people still liked what we did...

Such a buzz.   Rubbish music, but still such a buzz.  It's fun to play loud music, no matter how bad it might be!  And me and those guys still occasionally get together, in a rehersal studio somewhere, and blast out those old tunes, just for the **** of it, even we're well too old to be doing that shit...

Nope, not posting anything, I'd be too embarrassed aout my awful vocals, and there's nothing on the Internet (believe me, I've checked!), but I'd be interested to know if any of you lot were musically inclined at one point or another...  ???

I've played drums since -84. I've had couple of pauses and now the latter of them has lasted 2,5 years. The bands I belonged to were basic punk rock (in the veins of Vice Squad, MDM and Dirt), and another was crusty stuff which reminded 'Motörhead meets the Discharge' type of thing.

When I quit in the bands I felt it like freedom,  but miss it at times. Especially those people. If I'd join or form a band once again I think it would be more like some folky, jazzy, or progressive metal type of stuff. I don't know... I can recognise the feelings you have Ray.

However, I have played some synths too. I like to mix and mould soundscapes and make some deep dub rhythms too.

Never been in a band but a few of my mates were back in the day. This is the nearest i got. I'm the one at the very back the picture was taken in the Kilmarnock dole office.
Think most of you will like this Its heavily nma influenced lyrically with psychobilly influenced music.

I was in a metal band back in College that played out a number of times and had a small following.  Never got past the demo stage though before it all fell apart.  Other than that, just a few smaller bands and gatherings with friends over the years.

Since then I've been doing my now thing just for fun and have recorded a bunch of tunes.  If you're interested, here's the latest: http://release-designworks.com/wordpress/into-the-woods/

I'm a muso, but have never been in a band exactly. Classical music doesn't exactly lend itself to that... which is a shame. In the past few years I've branched out a lot and started doing things that push those boundaries, and being in a band is something I'd like to experience before I leave this earth.

One thing I can say from experience, though, is that collaborating with other musicians, when it's good, is one of the best feelings in the world.

Here's (http://www.mikseri.net/artists/agenda.136011.php) a link to songs of Agenda, a crust core band that I played drums in. There's 6 songs and it's their first EP (from -97) in its entirety.

Listening the songs is free. Just click on the play button or open a player from a boxed image in the right corner of each song.

You need a flash player to listen them.

What instrument do you play, Sozbot?

I think she's a singer. A professional singer?

I am sure she has said so in the past, and a singer of Classical music with an orchestra. Personally I like that. It shows the very varied music the band puts out has enough scope to appeal to all from  Opera to Punk Rock.

No, but my first boyfriend was in a very, very crap band that lasted for two weeks. He basically just screamed.

I haven't visited here for a while, and I've managed to grow some (metaphorical) balls, so here's a little taste of something I did in October.

(For the record, I'm not Leah Kardos, she's at the piano and is the composer of this song, and the album "Machines", for which I recorded all the vocals. It was never meant to be performed live so this gig was very much a one-off!)

Excellent. I enjoyed that. NMA will know who to ask if they want a female B/V in the future.

Never, although I always wanted to be in one. I used to play awesome "broomstick" bass but I gave it up after always wrecking the brooms and waking up with pieces of the bristles all over the place.

Cheers!! Glad you enjoyed it, I had a real blast working on the album and doing the gig.

As for your second point, I'd possibly die happy before I even had a chance to do it.  ;D

Whoa, now it seems I joining a band after three years pause. It felt like million years. I've had pauses with drumming couple of times earlier and latter of them was 24 years ago  :o. Pauses are bad and often it takes a long time before you get to same stage you were earlier.

The band is called D-Beatles, very fast punk hc played in d-beat rhythm. Ye know Discharge...

Ah, couldn't wait!
