Are there some The Mission fans on this board?
Which albums from them would you recommend?
I quite like albums like "Carved in Sand" and "Aura"..
-
Sorry to post a compilation but the first chapter is a brilliant lp especially the u.s. version
-
Yes,love the Mission,Carved in sand,Children are great albums, should be great catching them at Bearded Theory along with NMA.
-
yes, also like The Mish a lot, but have fallen out of touch with them over recent years...
Children and Carved In Sand are great albums... another vote for Grains Of Sand, an off-cut of CIS made up of un-used tracks from the same recording sessions... you can find it as a double-pack cheap via the usual sources... Mr Hussey has said that much of GOS is better than some of the stuff that went onto CIS...
And I'll throw out some love for the (IMO) under-rated Masque, some blinding tunes on there, like this one, Never Again...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDU18pPqMLs
... or 'Who Will Love Me Tomorrow...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MXXiAe4WmA
After 'Neverland', a decent enough album but not a classic, I fell away from them but they seem to be going strong, I must check 'em out again one day... anyone got any advice about more recent stuff? Is it remotely comparable to the old stuff?
One last note... they might be forgotten about nowadays in the mainstream, but they were pretty big once... back in the early 90's, they headlined a one-day festival at Finsbury Park, London in front of about 20,000 people, I was fortunate enough to be there and the five-band line up was...
The Mission
New Model Army
Killing Joke
Rollins Band
Bleach (nope, don't remember them either...)
Now, THAT was a show! :D
-
"Paradise..." on "Carved in sand" is a cool song:

I also like very much "Anyone but you" and "Evangeline" on "Aural delight"...catchy songs!:

One of those bands I want to love but something stops it happening. I like some stuff but I cant say I really got into them.
That said Butterfly on a Wheel is up there with my all time favourites.
-
anyone got any advice about more recent stuff?
I like "Aural delight" from 2002 with cool songs like the two ones i've posted above ;)
-
Those songs are pretty good... maybe it's time for me and The Mish to have a catch-up...
Sidenote... Wayne Hussey did an acoustic show some years back at a venue just down the road from me... and he was so staggeringly, nastily awful to a friend of mine for no reason whatsoever that I think it might have influenced how much I want to investigate their more recent stuff.. but from what I hear, that's pretty much par for the course when it comes to Mr Hussey... I'm happy to be convinced otherwise, Mission fans... :(

Yeah but The Mission were crap that day - I seem to remember Mr Hussey being somewhat off his tits - and the t shirts were stupid things with ducks on????
Did really like The Mish back in the day. I lost track when Masque was released and though I still listen to the odd track now and again I wouldn't say I'm a fan. Probably well worth me checking some stuff out again. So I'm with Ray - any suggestions for more recent stuff?

I love The Mission. Loved them in the 80s then lost touch with them a little for a year or two. The Brixton 'Silver' reunion gig reminded me of how fabulous they are. Their recent album "The Brightest Light" was right back on top form, as was every recent gig we've been to. As for Mr H, he's been a complete gentleman to us on his recent solo tour, very thoughtful and accommodating. His solo album 'Songs of Candlelight and Razorblades' is superb. Can't wait to see them (and their alter egos) in May.

I was into the Mission before NMA and have to say that their following is a lot like the army used to be before the incident. Very friendly, welcoming and non judgmental. If you get the chance get to one of the Blood Brothers shows in May or July (or seven out of the nine their doing like us). Its all the classics and a guaranteed top night.
As far as albums are concerned "Gods on Medicine" is a classic and "The Brightest Light" contains My personal favourite track Swansong

Really? That Rusk Hobbit stuff is still alive enough for you to lurk about waiting for a chance to drag it all up again just because we are talking about The Mission?
Move on - life is far too short.
:-*
-
Still keeping the faith.

Rusk... Hobbit... :o
An explanation, please...

A reference to a previous spat amongst the 'family' that really didn't need mentioning. That said, I have to say that the Rusk Hobbits had sod all to do with the most recent farrago (no offense meant Anna but having been involved in that one I can assure you that its true).
Probably best to leave it at that and move on...old news best left alone.
So, The Mission. Not my favorite band, but did some good tunes. Missed them back in the day so looking forward to Bearded Theory! :)

(no offense meant Anna but having been involved in that one I can assure you that its true).
None taken at all - I may have named it but I certainly didn't bring it up did I? More than enough recent bizzareness to contend with without any old crap resurfacing.

Nothing to do with the Rusk Hobbits, Anna. A different 'incident'.
-
Bearded Theory will be fun with both the NNA and Mission fans.
Blood Brothers fans, there a completely different kettle of fish. ;D
-
Used to go and see 'em quite a lot
I did the 6 nights at the Astoria in 88? (I think)
If I remember rightly there was a Leeds band every night as support?
Also did the usual Rock City dates and more local gigs than owt
Fave albums
God's own Medicine
Children
Got the new Hussey solo Cd the other week and I reckon it's good
Ain't seen 'em for years though
-
Actually from my 2014 NMA tour experience I can tell you that NMA have the most friendly and welcoming fans. I was offered places to sleep and rides by many people. I had one sit with me in a hospital until four in the morning.
And if you meant the band members, and/or crew they are also as said above. they by far exceeded my expectations. Especially the sound and light guys. All very nice and helpful. I have never seen such kind and understanding people.
Think what you want though.
@Ray: The Rusk hobbits are a group of fans that makes a shirt and have a FB group. That's all I know really.
-
The profits from the Rusk Hobbits t-shirts are given to charity, by the top bloke Stu Turnbull.
There are also the occasional meet ups; something a number of the following suggested should happen more outside of tour time.
All good fun.

Back to the thread
Having just listened to tower of strength for the first time in ages. Its essential listening for anyone interested in mission A awesome cd i had forgotten just how good it was I'm off to look out the eye liner lol
-
Back to the thread again...
I've said before that I really liked The Mission but fell out of touch with them... felt like getting back in touch, so checked out their most recent album, 'The Brightest Light'...
Superb. Really, really good. Truly surprised about how good it is. :o
-
Thanks for the recommendation Master Ray!
I will buy this album ASAP...i listen endlessly older songs like "Paradise will shine like the moon" and "Anyone but you" 8)
-
:) I really used to love The Mission but have been out of touch for quite a while now. Children and Gods Own Medicine are certainly classics, I wuite liked Craved in Sand and Masque, too.
I have heard lots of good stuff about the new solo album, I suppose I should give that a try, too - I quite like the title. ;)
-
I've been listening to the mission a lot more lately mostly the older stuff children carved in sand grains of sand tower of strength the first chapter so i will try n check this cd out asap i actually nearly bought the t shirt a few weeks ago but got out bid at the last second on ebay
-
I think the best thing about The Mission besides the music of course, is they don't take themselves too seriously, the live shows are great fun, and they like NMA also have a good bunch of people following them..
-

Yay, Master Ray. I was there too ! It was also the first time I saw NMA live.
-
That was a flippin great day out.
Loved it.
:)

Just stuck on 'Grains Of Sand'. IMO, far better than much of CIS...
The Grip Of Disease, anyone..?
