Title: Best NMA Song Not On A Proper Album
Post by: Space on April 07, 2015, 11:25:05 PM
What do Beatle classics like "Hey Jude," "Day Tripper," "I Want To Hold Your Hand," "We Can Work It Out," "Strawberry Fields Forever, " "Penny Lane" all have in common? None of them are on any Beatle album. Singles, EP tracks, B-side...none of those iconic songs were actually on a Beatles album.

Well, what are the best non-album New Model Army tracks? Name the three best NMA songs that aren't even on a proper studio album.

"I Wish"
"Ten Commandments"
"Space" (live from "Raw Melody Men")

Yeah 'Ten commandments' is one of my favorites, brilliant song.

I'll go with 'Nothing touches' - always loved it.

and...

'Southwest' hearing this B-side of 'Wonderful way to go' got me back into the band after most of the 90's listening to Electronica.

Actually "Strawberry Fields Forever, " "Penny Lane" were on Yellow Submarine.

Actually "Strawberry Fields Forever, " "Penny Lane" were on Yellow Submarine.

A) "Yellow Submarine" is not a proper album. The band didn't go into the studio to record that album. It was basically a compilation of various songs compiled to make a soundtrack for the film.

B) And just to clarify, "Strawberry Fields" and "Penny Lane" are not even on the soundtrack to YELLOW SUBMARINE. Those two songs are on the soundtrack to MAGICAL MYSTERY tour -- another collection of songs compiled to make a soundtrack.

Not NMA proper, but how 'Sooner or Later' never made it onto an album is beyond me.  'Higher Wall' is NMA proper, and a damn fine tune it is.

In my 100 or so NMA gigs, never played live before my eyes... until the Nottingham 30th shows!  Only made it to one of those dates...  and, yes, it was played on the date I didn't make it to...  :-\

Oh well, perhaps the 40th, eh?

I think Space was referring to a live version which, technically, isn't on a 'proper' NMA album... in which case I'd like to nominate 'Vagabonds' (live version from Raw Melody Men... bloody obscure track, that one...  ;))

Or, if you fancy going REALLY obscure, the live reggae version of 'Stupid Questions' from, I believe, the 10" vinyl version of, yes, 'Space'...

I'll go with 'Nothing touches' - always loved it.

It's an incredible song, i agree...maybe Justin's voice has never been so sensitive and moving than on this song, i think.

Also NMA songs not on albums that i like very much:

prison
courage
drummy B
marry the sea
turn away
brother

Hopefully Pol!

The Cause was the first thing that sprang to my mind, followed by a live version of Liberal Education on one of the "bootlegged" bootlegs that came with a 12" of something way back.. But when you stop and think about it and browse through the old vinyl there are so many contenders. White Coats was an EP release and not on T&C (It was included on the CD I think but not the vinyl)  the list just goes on ...

Anyone mentioned 'The charge' yet? One of my absolute favorite NMA songs.

Years ago they did a shanty live. I only heard them do it once and I think it was unaccompanied, but I would love to hear it again. Can anyone else remember it, or am I hallucinating?

It's on youtube. I think it's called "The Mermaid Song."
The studio version is on the "All Of This The Live Rarities" CD. It's not listed on the CD. It's a hidden track that plays after "Betcha."
It was also on one of the vinyl 12 inchers I bought years ago. Forgot which one.

Brilliant. Thanks for that. I don't have All of This, The Rarities, so I wasn't aware there was a recorded version, and not knowing the name of the song stumped me. Thanks for your help, it was really good to hear again after such a long time!

My mistake, Big Blue.

I must listen to strange brotherhood sometime, and i guess that is an album.

Uhh, a fan thing?

Look, I told you what it was, just because you have a problem with my sense of humor that doesn't mean you can't say, "Thanks for the info."
(And I love how Pol posted "as someone already said its the hidden track." Someone? Can't even credit me for the helpful post?)

I hold no grudges, I'm no child. I will still offer help when I can, so here's the live version the boys did some twenty years ago. Not a fan thing. On the contrary it is a thing of wonderful fun.

I also do not have 'All Of This - The Rareties'... I should get on that...

Mind you, I DO have 'BBC Radio One - Live In Concert' from 1994, which pretty much never gets mentioned...

Deep Blue would have been the winner hands down for not being on a proper NMA album.

OK, REALLY struggling to see why that comment would cause offence...

I'd never heard it before.  The vocals didn't exactly sound like Justin as I know him.  People post odd stuff on the internet all the time, agreed?  I wasn't sure if it was an official thing.  You confirmed it was, so I'm happy to take your word for it.  Fine... so why get all arsey about it?  It was an honest reaction...  ???

Your 'sense of humour' does tend to slip from time to time, eh?

 ;)

Released originally at the end of A-side of White Coats.

Yea, as others have said it's on Live Rarities too. But I can remember someone here said he/she did see them performing it live in the 80's. Robert Heaton stood up behind the drums and they all sang it in the front... Man, that's so awesome! It's a classic.
